  1. Next you will be asking for a description of Walmart. Not everyone lives in the US. Flipkart is 20-30 times bigger than Walmart in India and bigger than Amazon as well. Google has tried breaking into the Indian market with Google Wallet and has had its ass handed to it in the fintech field by PayTM. And India allows 100% foreign ownership in tech so its not a protected market like China. Its just that there are folks in India who didnt leave to come to Silicon Valley to run Google and Microsoft. So there are plenty of smart people and now that the competition is on the field of who has the most brains rather than the most natural resources (US prosperity is built on the Texas and California oil booms and war profiteering from WW1 and WW2), US companies are not the obvious winners. So what do you do? You buy the winners.

So next time you go to have sex an Amazon drone will come to your window and knock and your Amazon Echo will ask "Do you need a condom? Say yes to purchase!!"

The prosperity of US is built partly on the fact that its considered a safe haven for investments. Doesnt matter if you are a corrupt Chinese bureacrat, a Nigerian scamster, a Rwandan genocidal warlord, a Korean monopolist Chaebol kingpin, a south American drug kingpin, a corrupt Indian politician, an inbred European ex Royal with ill gotten Nazi loot; The US welcomes all investments.

The US does not grab your property for personal crimes. It only confiscates property belonging to nation states it has disagreements with.

So once you have made your money and would like to go clean you invest it in USA and retire to the US.

This reputation is hard won and many a constituional and moral principle has been sacrificed for this key pillar of prosperity.

You dont want to endanger it just to feel some Schadenfreude over the Chinese losing money on their investments.

Rather you should keep rooting for a booming US economy with constant inflow of foreign money. A booming economy lifts all boats.

  15. Blame Trump on Chinese Companies Are Buying Up Cash-Strapped US Colleges (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 0

Most US citizens do not pay the full tuition. Only foreign students pay the full tuition and these students subsidize the resident students who get a much reduced tuition as well as scholarships, assistantships and loans subsidized by the taxpayer.
With Trump turning the US into an unwelcome place the number of foreign students has fallen this year. The colleges see the trend and in another 2-3 years will start running into real cash flow problems so they are selling while the assets still have value.

Similarly in the future people will work if they want to not because they have been drafted to. Today everyone has to work or starve - there is no real choice.

With an UBI, work becomes a choice and the workers will be much more professional as they would have CHOSEN to work rather than forced to.

  18. USA with barriers raised is the Great Depression. Your point is?

  19. Raising barriers doesnt make you the only stable state. Countries like Germany and Japan would attract more Elon Musks and Sergey Brins if USA creates an image of itself being in it only for its own interests.

  20. DOES NOT MATTER

The sophistication of the US economy needs technical folks. If the economy could afford to pay more it would already be paying more to attract more. It is paying what it can afford. At that price point there are not enough technical folks in the US to meet the sophistication of the economy.

Your argument is akin to any woman will sleep with a guy given enough money. Yeah probably given a billion dollars probably true but every guy cannot afford a billion dollars every time hes horny so its a nothingburger of an argument.

If the aim is to reduce traffic you want to get those who can afford to drive by cars to use mass transit. The only way to do that is make sure mass transit is not crowded with the poor. The market economy solution for that is to charge more so the poor dont use mass transit.
You solve your traffic issues as well as make mass transit self funding.
Once mass transit is self funding it can expand. As it expands it will become more and more cheaper due to economies of scale till at some point the poor can afford to use it and the price will still be a profit making one.
What about the poor's transportation needs during the transition phase. Thats what Uber is for. Let the poor use Uber. After all their the subsidy is being paid by VCs not the general taxpayer.
