On Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing album, try encoding the very last track (I forgot what it's called) with different encoders. It's a really difficult song for MP3 encoders to get right, esp around 23 seconds into the song when the cello starts. Every encoder I've used so far screws up the cello at 128kbs, but you can compare which encoders handle it better than others.
Apparently Hercules is going out of business because of embezzlement and mismanagement. That's so depressing, being killed from the inside. I still remember when Test Drive came with monochrome drivers for Hercules.
Because one ass cheek didn't know what the other ass cheek was up to in Xerox. They lost in court because Apple showed that they had a licensing agreement in the form of a stock offering. BTW, the same thing happened between Apple and Microsoft.
I thought we had a character limit on how long comments could be? Oh wait, it's in preferences and mine's set at 4096. Well, that's going to change real quick...
I'm wondering how many of Hitler's votes came from little kids trying to be funny, and how many came from people who were voting for "historically signifigant" people. Myself, I thought that Person of the Century was supposed to be about people who had a positive impact on history, but I dunno. I didn't read the fine print.
With all the new features and options that have popped up over the last few months, maybe it's time for a Slashdot user's manual for newbies, or forgetful people like me.
Monty Python was pretty funny, esp the Holy Grail, but I always felt that they were overrated. I thought American shows like SNL and In Living Color were a lot funnier, but maybe that's just a taste issue.
A friend of mine back in junior high had a water shotgun. It didn't shoot far at all, held barely enough water for 5 or six shots, but man... people started running when he started pumping it. There was something about the blast of water that made our friends freak out that a water stream could never do. I've been looking for this at every Toys R Us and Walmart I've been to, but I've never been able to find it.
*Sigh* It was so depressing when I first got my "I wanna suck your hot cock" messages with a URL on ICQ. Did I have my email listed? Nope. All they have to do is "Add Users" and type in a random name like "Doug" or "James" and they get a stack of people whose names start with "Doug" or "James" whether or not your email address is entered. Sure, they can't email you. They'll just ICQ you instead.
IPNetRouter 1.4 for the Mac also works very well. 1.3.3 wasn't able to handle the RTP/RTSP protocol required for quicktime streaming (had to map out the port manually) but they fixed that one right away. ICQ, Real, etc all work great. Wow, I can't believe I almost bought a hardware router for my office. Instead we just took one of our old Macs out of mothballs.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried out WinGate 3.0 for windows?
Yeah, I'd seen the voice actor too. I know he's got a natural Jamaican accent and I don't deny that the perceived stereotypes were innocent, but I'm still of the opinion that Lucas should've been more careful about the voice he picked out for JarJar. Common sense or at least some test screenings would've indicated to him that this would rub a lot of people the wrong way.
When thousands of total strangers across the internet say "Yeah, I also thought Jar-Jar sounded Jamaican, then you know something's not right. Okay, so Lucas didn't intentionally try to make fun of Jamaicans in his movie, but a man in his position should've been more careful screening for this sort of thing.
Intel themselves have said in press releases that IA-64 is intended to be a server architecture. It may happen somewhere down the line that they slowly migrate into the consumer realm, but not even Intel is pushing that concept. If it's any indication of their plans, the "Willamette" architecture has been handed the "P7" designation, not Merced. Maybe they'll call it Pentium !V or something like that.
I could be proven wrong in two years, but I quite honestly doubt that the online sales of MP3's will do much better than SDMI. I'd rather buy good old hard plastic Compact Discs, wouldn't you? Buying MP3's I'd feel like I was being cheated out of my money. Here's a bunch of data that I'm getting that I could make a million copies of, that I probably could've copied from my friends... and I'm paying green money for it! Yes, it costs a little less than an album, but I don't mind paying a couple bucks extra if it means I can just swivel my chair to the right, scan around, pull an album out of my CD rack and pop the CD into my drive. There's something about that that feels better than scanning through a bunch of playlists.
Don't get me wrong: I love MP3's, I've endcoded 11GB of them so far, and until I buy a second CD drive I'll be playing them when I know I have to swap a lot of data CD's in and out of the computer. But still...
Just for clarification, Apple doesn't own the Sorenson codec. Apple is licensing it, and the terms of the contract are that the company is not allowed to license it to anyone else.
Actually, there was a news article a while back about how MSNBC had to switch all their systems back from NT to Unix because NT just wasn't cutting it. Anyone know if that's still the case?
In the case of Microsoft and Apple several years ago, Apple lost not because of "look and feel issues" but because then-CEO John Sculley signed a deal with MS saying that MS was allowed to copy certain features of the Mac's GUI in exchange for something or other (I forgot the details). The Apple legal team was unaware of this document and went ahead with the lawsuit against MS. It was because of this document that they lost, and not because of "look and feel" issues.
According to law, a company can sue if the look of the original "communicates an idea" and if the defendant's product attempts to confuse the brand identity of this "idea." In other words, having an egg-shaped case with a white front, translucent colored back and white bottom half makes you think "It's an iMac." If the E-Power's plastics cause brand confusion, then Apple might have a case. Gucci won a similar lawsuit against a company that was putting a big golden "G" on the faces of its watches (which I'm assuming only Gucci did). Their argument was that the imitators were causing brand confusion by imitating the Gucci "G," which had become a brand identifier. Apple might have a case itself this time.
Without whose competition these prices might not have been possible. Competition is good, no?
Make sure you listen to it with headphones on instead of speakers. If the encoder is sub-par in quality, the cello will have some kinda wobbly sound

I've asked Rob about that before, and he said that slash doesn't track anonymous posts.
John Herbert wrote the original series.
His son is writing the new book.
John Hebert is some dude's slashdot login name, which seems to have been misspelled.

No need to get into conniptions if you don't like it.

LinuxPPC comes with both KDE and Gnome in the installer.
I think Roblimo is a beast from ancient Greek Mythology. It has the head of a Rob and the body of a Justin.

The fixed link is over here.
