  1. Nothing New on Attacking Open Source · · Score: 1
Why are people surprised that ZDnet printed this article? Most 'computer journalists' literally have no idea what they're talking about. They keep their jobs simply because they can put an idea on paper in a clear and readable manner. The fact that what they write has no basis in fact or logic is beside the point.

Unfortunatley OpenSource is an idea, and not an enitity. Otherwise, a defamation of character and libel lawsuit would already by in the works.

This is one time where I liked the fact the the government was screwing something up.

So now, any whacko can go down to Circuit City, pick up a Sony Super Duper Accurate GPS system, hook it up to a homemade missle(made from plans he found on the internet) and aim it directly at MY cubicle.

In the past, at least I had the comfort of knowing that there was a good chance that the entire office would be taken out..but with this kind of precision possible, I've lost all peace of mind.

It seems that when a company announces they will focus on the Internet, the media jumps to the conclusion that the company is forsaking it's original business.

A few months ago when Sega announce they would focus on internet games, the media reported that Sega was dropping out of the console market.

When Toys R Us decided to sell stuff online, it was reported that TRU was closing down all of its stores.

This BeOs story is just another in the long line of over-reacting media hype.

$99 is nothing. Most college books cost more than that(and you get a lot less usage out of them).
As far as it not being open source..99% of the target audience don't care. How many artists actually want to fix C++ bugs or 'add new features'? A comphrehensive scripting language is much more valuable than having a directory of .c files.

What if we imprisioned every minority that makes less than $15,000 a year? The odds are pretty good that one of those millions of people would've killed someone's child. But does that make it right?

How about we sterilize every 17-24 yr old male that has watched a porno? I'm sure that we just saved someone's daughter from rape. But does that make it right?

Let's report every teen who feels left out, depressed, plays violent games, or wears black every day. We 'may' have stopped a school shooting, but at what cost?

You pay your ISP $20. In return you get access to the web, email and (sometimes) usenet.

Your ISP pays another local company for the T1/T3 lines that hook up to an internet backbone(ATT,MCI, etc). I'll call this other local company COX. This can cost from $700-1000 month for a singe T1 to thousands a month for a T3/DS3/OCx etc etc. Mosts ISP have more than a singe T1.

Your ISP also has to pay for the Usenet newsfeed from COX.(the ISP's news server gets articles from COX and you get the articles from your ISP) Or they might go to a different news provider like CAIS. Most ISP's do this because usenet is a beast that will destroy a server in a heartbeat.

IRC is free as far as I know. Your ISP can set up it's own IRC server but it doesnt cost anything to hook up up to the rest of the world(unlike Usenet).

Email is free. Almost anyone with an IP and PC can set up a mail server.

(BTW, COX is the backbone provider where I live(VA) Your's will probaly be different) D

I doubt Sony will lose much money over this.

A couple of months back, it was found that owners of Gran Turismo 2(PSX) could only complete 98% of the game due to some last minute changes to the game. Not really a big deal but enough people complained that Sony 'recalled' GranTurismo2 and replaced it with a '100%' version.

Compared to the amount of GT2 CDs sold, the number of people that went for the recall was miniscule.

This is just Sony putting on a good face for the industry/public. 'Look, we did the right thing!'

Evidently most games out for the PS2 in Japan (this is second hand information, btw) were rushed out so quickly that they only use 50% or less of the PS2's capabilities. The upshot of which is the graphics you see currently are usually well below the PS2's capabilities.

The PS2 games currently out probaby use a lot less than 50% of it's power. But this is common in all consoles. Usually a console is phased out way before designers can wring every last bit of power from it. The only exceptions I can think of is the 2600(which had games far beyond what was thought possible for it) and the SuperNES(Which hung around a couple of years longer than it should have).

The Jaguar, Saturn, PSX, and N64 will never see games that push them to their limit. The PS2 and Dreamcast will probaly suffer the same fate.

  17. Legos Saved My Life on Engineers Use Legos, Too! · · Score: 1

A few years ago I was driving a broken down Audi. It had a bad habit if spitting out fluid from the steering rack which would make steering the car suddenly very 'difficult'. One day I found out the steering wheel had about 2 inches of play in it.(Up and Down, not left to right)which caused this. I took it to a mechanic who said all I needed was a spacer (a.k.a. a block of rubber) and it would only cost $80 bucks to fix.
Needless to say, I barely had $8, so $80 was way out of my league. I went home, taped a couple of Legos together and shoved them under the steering column. It worked flawlessly and they were still there when the car finally died 3 years later.
