  1. Pizza Payments on Tridge Speaks Out · · Score: 5, Funny

Actually, I would like to have asked him if he still receives occasional "pizza payments" for Samba.

Don't know if it still says it, but in the old docs for Samba, they used to have an address where you could FedEx pizza donations to the Samba team.

Now *that's* my idea of compensation. Free as in beer? Well, what goes better with free beer than free pizza!

They worry about plauge over there the way our guys worry about anthrax over here.

BTW, they mentioned in the article that in addition to small-to-moderate sized outbreaks in third world countries, we receive a couple of cases of plague here in the U.S., mostly in the Southeast where people are infected by bites from prairie dog fleas. The plague bug lives quite happily amongst the prairie dogs -- it's only an unfortunate turn in natural selection that made it infect humans (remember, the number rule for a parasite is *DON'T KILL THE HOST*).

It's very frustrating to have to pull these peoples' weight. To be honest, I would rather just be graded on my own ability to perform - when you have four people, profs tend to expect 4x the quality of work they would get from one person. You get one slacker, and now four people have only produced 3x the work, and everyone pays for it.

Don't even get me started on having to deal with group dynamics when you end up assigned to a project with a complete jackass -- but then, that did help me prepare for a Dilbertian experience in America's workforce.. *sigh*...

You might appreciate this story then. When I was a freshman, I took Astronomy 100 as an elective. My professor had a "doppler ball" that emitted a high-pitched tone and was tethered to a string. It was used to demonstrate the doppler effect when it was swung around or thrown. Since it was a 9:00 am freshman lecture of about 400 people, we had plenty of sleepers and newspaper readers.

The professor made a habit of firing up the doppler ball first thing in lecture and nailing the sleepers and newspaper-readers with it. Fun for those of us paying attention, a good lesson to those who weren't.

Having been in a classroom that was wired and unrestricted (I took a UI class at college where all 30 students had a PC hooked up to the Internet), I can say that it is VERY distracting when other people are clicking and clacking and surfing the web while the professor is talking. It's certainly your right not to learn if you don't want to - heck, you're just improving my grade - but keep it in the dorm room where you don't bother those of us trying to learn.

Well, as far as onboard planes --

    * Blast doors separating pilots from passengers.

    * Time-controlled locks on the doors between pilots and passengers (I have heard that one pilot was lured out by the killing of passengers).

    * Reduce or eliminate carry-on luggage, and institute *frequent* random bag checks on all luggage.

    * Provide uniformed guards with weapons at the door to the cockpit.

    * In addition to the uniformed guards, guarantee at least one plainclothes armed officer on board every flight.

    * Consider -- and before yesterday, believe me, I would **NEVER** have thought such a thing -- retinal scans as passengers enter the plane itself to guarantee they are who they say they are. Force passengers to submit to a retinal scan before being allowed aboard ANY plans, similar to how we force them to get passports now for international flights.

*Sigh*.. I know how people will react to these suggestions, but believe me, I'm not flame-baiting. The plane that departed from Dulles took off from an airport ten minutes from my house. I am genuinely scared to get on a plane flight within the United States now, and nothing short of... well, basically Marshall Law is going to get me on one any time in the near future. I just keep thinking that it could have been me staring out the window of one of those planes as it headed for its fate...
