Im no unix expert, but I do have experience with them. I have been using MacOSX for several weeks now, and it is a lot like a regular unix system, if thats what you want it to be. If you want to live in shell windows, using the command line, it is perfectly possible to get along that way. All of the standard unix utilities you would expect are there. Most of the source code for terminal apps that you try will work with little or no modification. If you wanna use it for a proxy for your network, or for your web server, it is all there, waiting for you. If you want to use the gui, it is waiting there for you too. I use pico for a lot of text editing, but sometimes I use textEdit (the cocoa app). I think many diehard unix users will be happy if they give it a chance. It is what you make of it
funny you talk about retinal scans... Flipping through the movie channels last night, I noticed 'never Say Never Again' was on. one of the Bad Guys in the movie used a glass eye to fool a retinal scan device into thinking he was the President. Ok, so maybe getting a fake eye implanted would be out of the question if you wanted to steal most people's identity, but it could still be done if it was worth it.
I had a kinda nutty teacher many years ago in school, and he was into quake, and would let us convert our designs into quake maps for extra credit. At first we were just doing it for fun, but it soon became evident how incredibly helpful this can be to your visualization skills. The after hours frag fests on our lan were a ton of fun, and actually helped bring the design teams closer together, and help us work more as a team. Im surprised professional architecture teams dont do something similar, so they can give their clients a rough walkthru of their design in a day or two, rather than the first walkthru happening after it is built.
Why wait for a q3 editor. Go to mac.telefragged.com and grab Quiver, the q1 editor for mac. it is a really powerful design tool that is amazingly easy to use. I use to use virtual pc and a number of different pc quake editors. the day quiver came out, virtual pc magically disappeared off my drive, and all was right with the world:)
well, after your post, I went and dug out my old 603 machine which i havent used in years. lo and behold, Project X was on it. As someone else who replied to your post mentioned, the viewer was called hotsauce. And whaddaya know... I was able to browse local files on my drive, in 3d space using the standalone app, and not a plug in. Gee, kinda sounds like a 3d finder now, doesnt it? Also, yes, it was publically available as well, for anyone willing to do a bit of searching to find it.. it wasnt just a toy one of their devs kept only to himself. gg
Apple, long ago, did have a 3d navigator... an experimental replacement for the Finder. the only name I ever heard it called by was 'Project X', and if I remember correctly, it was an OpenDoc app (could be wrong on that point). It was available, altho somewhat hidden on the Apple site, but Im sure it has long since disappeared. Didnt get to far into it's development. It was a dog for speed, and not very intuitive, or fun once the initial niftyness wore out.
do me a favor, go to the apple store, and just try to buy osx server for intel. for that matter, see if you can find a link to buy server at all. yes, developer versions of server ran on intel, but that was dropped. yes, darwin runs on intel, but that is more due to industrious hackers than Apple. but that is a moot point, because darwin is NOT OSX. also, OSX server is a different beast than client. Just because one ran on intel at one point does not mean that the other will
better than naming it after a year that you barely manage to ship in..... also, when it hits 2001, they os wont look out of date, just because of its name, as has happened with 95, 98, and will happen with 2000
Are we doomed to see this comment on every story about mac osx from now on? Please everyone who has had this thought... read this now and remember me later...... Apple is a hardware company. They make $ on boxes. thats it. end of story. please... no more 'osx on intel?' comments.... or i will puke. honest. and no, it wont be insanely great puke
Yes. Go to this link From there you can download a program which will test your machine, to see if it affected by the problem. The readme included with the app should have more information on the problem and what to tell the tech, but basically it is just a bunk rom chip. Like I said, it's free, and if they arent busy, shouldnt take more than 10 minutes. If you can find a small authorized shop you might wanna try there, unless you can catch CompUSA on a day when they arent busy. Good luck.
If your talking about a bad rom chip on your motherboard, that is a pretty well documented problem with the powerpc performa line. Take it to any apple authorized repairshop, and they will fix it. for free. Takes like 5 minutes. I had the same problem with my 6220, and finally got it fixed when an OS upgrade refused to install because of the bad ROM chip.
Hope that helps
The article is entitled 'Windows Whistler Screenshots'. And well, they are pretty lame ass screenshots for the whole story to be based off of it. Considering that fact, the screenshots are real snoozers. I agree with the poster you replied to. What is the big deal. Looks almost like it always has. Zzzz........
with their own messageboards etc... will there be an option to kick the messageboard trolls out of yourneighborhood and make them move into the simslums????
They had it up and running at quakecon. It really rocks. It looks beautiful, has good mood and atmosphere. I got kinda creeped out playing it for just a few minutes, even amid all the noise of the con. Considering the fact they had it up and running, and it looked pretty stable and fast, I would say it shouldnt be too long before it arrives.
I agree with the fact that computer vendors could save money shipping a free Windows clone. But dont you think M$ will put a bit of 'pressure' on vendors to not ship the clone, such as 'you will never ship another machine with Windows on it again?' If you are a vendor, you gotta think, if you totally switch to the Windows clone, is the money you save gonna make up for the customers you lose because they need 'windows' and dont have the knowledge/time to figure out openwindows is the same thing? All that doesnt even take into consideration the fact that prolly 99% of pcs shipped today already include Windows, so what incentive would there be for the average person to switch from an OS that came with their machine to a hacked clone of it with no support...
Maybe this will help clear it up for you on how hard it is to add MP support for Mac... This is from Graeme Devine's plan file from July 24: "I'll be adding the SMP support into Q3A and shipping a build off to Apple today" Hmm, adding it in and shipping it the same day... doesn't sound too hard if you ask me. if you wanna check out the whole.plan, click here
this is just bad in so many ways.... it is bad enough that the carnivore project seems to be going thru without too many hooks..... This story raises a possibility most people prolly havent thought of tho.. like it says, what are you gonna do if you get cut off? what can you do? unfortunately it isnt up to us. once again, we get to play the pawn.... hopefullly we wil be able to move into checkmate after this, and get it over with. all of us here are pretty much slaves to our isp.... the one thing we need to remember, is that the internet is an open place... and just because a certain host doesnt agree with you, doesnt mean you need to give up what you are doing.
I play qw a couple of hours a day.. every day. and you know what, i see a ton of cheaters. People that autoaim, people that can track players thru walls, people moving up to 10 times of the speed they should be going at. You know what tho, 95% of this started within 1 day of the source release. I'm not trying to say opensource is bad or anything, but try to understand why gamers 'throw up their hands' when source is released. They know that playing from now on will never be the same.
