1) DivX video encapsulated in an AVI is playable in Quicktime Players, you just need an appropriate QuickTime codec to be available. There has been DivX codecs available for the MacOS version of QuickTime for well over a year. There is a problem with the sound though... which leads onto your second factual error:
2) The AVI file format standard does not allow non-compressed audio. Thus using mp3 audio in an AVI file creates a non-standard AVI file. QuickTime cannot currently handle, this, although there is talk that QuickTime 6 will allow the QuickTime player to be able to handle this.
As far as cross platform support for QuickTime goes, there are a number of open source players. Most notably Open QuickTime. (http://openqt.sourceforge.net) Which is open source, and has plugin support. Additionally, QuickTime is defined similarly to HTML in that, if the player does not support a "tag", then it can safely ignore it... so if you only want to support the audio and video streams, you only have to write a player that supports those parts, and you can safely ignore the rest.
lol, that is truely the only reason why I keep VPC around. Tis the best game of all time... someone should try to get them to release the source... nobody is going to buy it anymore, and it could use with a bugfix or fifty:)
You have to ask it to add it... even if you had to region encode it, you can have more than one region set, so I don't see any reason to not have it open to all regions anyway, or at least all used regions.
You need to have iCab set with the right fonts for the right encodings. Once you have that set up, everything should go smoothly. There has been a lengthy discussion on this topic in comp.infosystems.www.browsers.mac recently.
Sorry for not being clearer, but that was precisely my point. The creation of the *web* has virutally nothing to do with the USA, and to believe otherwise, is naïve.
"Find a large file and start copying it to the floppy."
heh heh, you're funny. Actually MacOS wouldn't do that to begin with... it won't try copying a file to a drive if there isn't enough space. (I assume that by "large file", you mean 10+ MB)
I am not sure if it was the original posters intention, but I think the better method would to be based on the number of posts each individual posts. ie if someone posts 5 comments per year, but each of them get moderated up to 4, they would be automatically given a bonus, while if another person posts 30 messages per week, but only one or two of these were moderated up, they would not get a bonus.
I think that that is part of the joke (at least that is how I percieve it)

"The Athlon is faster than the G4. Not only because it has nearly twice the clock speed"
Sorry, this is just not true. if you get a 68000 processor runing at twice the MHz as a G4, it will not run faster. Your argument, while it may be correct anyway, is fundamentally flawed.
"but it also has a better branchpredictor, which is important because it has a very deep pipeline. G4, on the other hand only has a 4-stage pipeline."
Again, this is flawed. why does the better branch predictor on the Athalon matter if the G4 has a pipeline, less than a quarter the size. The Athalon has to be at least 4 times as efficient to make up for the depth of the pipeline.
"That's why it won't ramp beyond 500 Mhz"
No, it just makes it more dificult to ramp beyond 500MHz, not impossible.
I am not saying that the G4 is faster than the Athalon. If you want to argue that, then use some real arguments that might actually be relevant, rather than spewing off some facts, and declaring them to be supportive of your argumnt.
You don't need the option, or at least, I have never needed it (and never seen an option to require an "option") Whether you like the springloaded folders or not (I find them very cool personally), there is no way to do the equivalent in any other OS (that I know of) no matter how many buttons you press, so in fact the original poster is being very misleading.
I believe that the port to MacOSX was to the Carbon API, which is much more similar to MacOS than to BSD. They would have to port quicktime to Cocoa to make it more easily portable.
Although I am not entirely sure, I think that the menu that it produces is just the regular menu (ie, not a contextual menu) so it would be like having the menubar appear under your mouse. _That_ is the feature that would probably not make it.
Aqua is implimented as an appearance in MacOSX. Whether one will be able to change the appearance remains to be seen, but part of the Carbon API is GetTheme, and SetTheme, so people might be able to write an appearance switcher for OSX fairly easily.
since posting above, a "reliable source" informed me that aqua is, infact, an appearance... so it seems that there remains appearance suport in MacOSX.
There has been a group working on making an open-source appearence (that is what they are called in the MacOS... "themes" are for the entire UI change, not just the visuals) creator. The word from apple is that they won't remove appearance capability, but they won't do any more with it.... Of course as MacOSX is a completelty independant from other MacOSs, so they might not have put the time in to make it compatible with the previous appearances, and given the changes in the UI, this might nto even be feasable. anyway, the url for the group workingn on the open source appearance editor is:
This is completely off topic, but I need to ask it anyway:
I saw a movie a couple of years ago in suisse, that was made (I think) in germany, but it was in english, and had french subtitles, and was called (a translation from the french) "Love and Calculus" It was about this woman who had some kind of connection to Ada through her unborn child (or something like that) anyway, it talked about ada's life, and her gambling habbits... does anyone know about this at all? It was a pretty cool movie in my opinion, and would recomend it to many people, but I have not heard of it since then, and my many searches have not revealed anything... the question is: has anyone heard of this movie, and does anyone know where it can be found?
I think that the messagepad 2x00 had a 160MHz chip that was upgradable to a 240MHz chip... for a computer that is (at least) 2 years old, this is pretty impressive. As for getting their code, good luck! Apple has refused to allow people to see enough code to fix some fundamental problems with the NewtOS. There has been some rumours that apple might be using some of the Newton technology with a PalmOS comuputer, but I would take this with a grain of salt as this has been predicted for over a year, with no solid info. If this were true, though, then I think that there would be no chance that Apple would release the tech.

I will compare the borg to linux (or at least the GPL), and the federation to microsoft...
The borg assimalates people into their collective, one cannot leave (with a couple of dodgy exceptions that are exceptions rather than the rule)
The GPL lisence assimilates code. once code has been GPLed, it cannot leave (I don't think that there is any counter-examples of this)
The borg are indestructable. (for all intensive purposes) To destroy the borg, you have to destroy every borg in existance (because every borg has the ability to produce as many borg as hosts they can find, and every borg has the knowledge of all the borg). Considering just one borg cube would have taken out almost all of the federation's fleet (if it wasn't for picard, in "first contact") and how wide spread they are (they are seen throughout the galaxy) this would be a pretty big accomplishment.
Linux is indestructable. (no I don't mean it's stability) As it's code is free (as in speach) anyone can get the code, and improve it. Even if all of the companies that make money off of linux stopped tomorrow, linux would continue to grow, and improve. Even if the internet stopped working, and people couldn't contact each other to co-ordinate the programming of major linux projects, linux would continue as people could program away for themselves. To destroy linux, you would have to destroy every linux source on the planet, as every source has the knowlege of all the linux programmers in the world.
The borg adapt quickly because they use the knowlege gained from eachother to protect from future attacks.
Linux adapts quickly as people use knowlege from other linux users, and their access to source code to patch holes as soon as they are found.
The borg are not evil, they do what they can to help people (they don't kill people, they assimilate them, from the borg's perspective, they are "helping" them become borg.)
Linux is not evil, its advocates do what they do because they believe that they are "helping" them. (Before you flame, ask yourself: how many people go back to windows after using linux for any reasonable length of time?)

Microsoft can be bought out (unlikely), or can buy other companies (more likely) and thus change its' structure. Microsoft can sell off part of itself, or buy another company to add to itself without much dificulty.
The federation is easily destroyed. Without the engeneers working away to create new ships, new weapons, and new technology, the federation can be easily disolved away into nothingness. The federation has a minimum population to continue to function. I won't put a number on this, but its system requires a certain hierarchy that allows people to work efficiently.
