Let's dissect this one, shall we?

"intruders would first need to log in to their own Hotmail accounts" right, no cracker would be bright enough to create a new one just for this purpose, duh...

"which means they'd leave a clear trail for investigators to follow" Yup, they'd follow it all the way to a public library.

    Otherwise, entertaining piece.

Keep reading-- the "gentle reminder" idea was actually a pretty damn good (and suitable) one. As much as I like swapping, it's nice to see a new technology come out where the guy's first thought isn't "Hmm, how can I use this to trade music?" Read closely: it's a great application. Not suitable for replacing your corporate LAN overnight, but a perfect little niche for what he describes.

don't let the webcams show worthwhile info; i.e., the room layout, or available merchandise. just cover entrances/exits, or wide-angle, low-detail overall shots so you can monitor for activity. (even if the cam refreshes every 5 seconds, most poeple can make it through a door quicker than that.) Also, keep your goals in mind: do you just want to know when someone's in there, or do you want high quality pics that can be used as evidence or for IDing perps?

  10. wouldn't have mattered much. on Why Don't Servers Support Power Management? · · Score: 3
I used to live in california, and back when there were water shortages there, everyone was asked to put bricks and half milk cartons in their toiet tanks, water their lawns every other day, etc. Later, I learned that agriculture in CA uses 85% of the state's water. So, if every urban person in the whole state (about 30 million people) had cut their water usage in *half* (not bloody likely, or even possible), that would have only made a difference of about 7%.

(Besides, at the same time, I got a job cleaning up a gov't construction site. The boss, at one point, took a running hose and stuck the nozzle into a urinal to save himself from having to walk to turn it off. I mentioned the drought. "The government," he said, "does not have a water shortage.")

Similarly, a quick look at the laws of thermodynamics tells us that, for example, it takes more energy to cool a room because of a computer than the computer itself gives off. Air conditioning, lighting, and utilities for new residents are some of the reasons behind the brownouts in the golden state. A few idling CPUs and spun-down hard drives, while a Good Thing, wouldn't make much difference.

  11. please let this happen! on OS X on x86? · · Score: 1

I know Apple, makers of pricey hardware for two decades, does not want this to happen, but oh GOD would I be happy to have a cheap triple-boot Intel-based Win/Linux/OS-X box! Imagine being able to funnel all your $$$ into just one box! Picture it: Linux, Win2k, and MacOS-X all on a dual-CPU box (full multi-CPU capabilities in each now, natch!) with, say, two 7200 RPM 40 GB Maxtors, two 80 GB 5400s, and 1 GB PC133. God, that would be great. (Maybe even get them all running under VMWare so I wouldn't even have to reboot!) Apple in general and Steve in particular will do all they can to keep MacOS off of Intel hardware, but I dearly hope some hackers will pull it off.

Anyone who asks "why?" wouldn't understand the answer, but I'll give it a shot. I would love to be able to have all my DVDs ripped onto a central server so I could watch it from a networked TIVO-like device in any room in the house, without having to risk scratching the original disc. A couple more years, a better TIVO, cheaper hard drives, and life will be perfect. :-) Anyone who already has their MP3s available on every box in the house should have no trouble seeing the appeal of doing the same with movies.
