Women don't like programming, plain and simple. I know quite a few women wanting to major in CS... problem is, they all get turned off quick by programming, and now three of them are changing their major because of it. There are just as many geeks in "chemistry" as there are in "biotechnology" so the whole 'seen as a bunch of geek guys' thing is completely wrong.
Is that having several keys does not make the encryption exponentially harder to break. It makes it linearly harder. Having 40 55 bit keys is worse security than having 1 56 bit key. It's like using 40 bike chains as locks versus a deadbolt lock. The only good thing about this is 1) in case someone tries brute force (even then its feeble in comparison to having a larger key) or 2) To tell the "big wigs" that they have 1000bit encryption (which is a lie), but sounds better than 56bit.
Okay, who the heck started the whole "we're trying to be god" thing anyways? This is not the first time someone's brought it up, and to that I say... we have ALWAYS been god. God is made up. If you believe in Christianity, then you believe that humans were the first inhabitants of the earth... which has since been proven wrong by science. (for those doubtful, just for the sake of arguement) Now here's someone saying that we "shouldn't mess with nature". Humans have always messed with Nature. Always have, always will. So far, it's been about 50% effective. While humans are living longer, we are also polluting our atmosphere, our oceans, etc... One would expect the same types of things to occur with this Genome thing. Genetic profiling could allow more people to live longer, but it could also ruin a few people's lives. Just like the internet. While it brought many job opportunities, it has also hurt many people's business, and brought about political changes. That's just how things turn out. You take the good with the bad. Aside from not being the "superior species" anymore, I don't see that much bad in this.
yeah I'm sorry guys... ill have to do better next time. I'm going to write a large text file that will be the best "first post" ever and then when the time comes, ill copy and paste it, and everyone will be amased.
Main problem I see is that for now it would be read-only, like CD's... and we already have DVD storage. Still though, these would be great for movie storage. You could store the entire star wars trilogy in 3 different languages, THX and the original analog audio, all on one cube.
If I'm not mistaken, isn't ReiserFS a Journaling filesystem? It says so right here on my SuSE 6.4 Linux box... ok so maybe its in the thick book they give you, but it's there. And yes, its journaling. by the way, I just installed SuSE last night, my GOD it kicks ass!
What would be nice is to add software that converts the MPEG-2 files to MPEG-4 (DivX). That way you could store at least twice as much. You could also add the feature to Archive shows, which would do the conversion.
The best thing about the human body is it's ability to repair itself. Humans have yet to build a machine that is capable of doing that. Anyone ever see that movie "death becomes you" ? We'd be just like those two old ladies at the end. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but we are a LONG way off, and this just appears to be one of the first steps. Ehh... who knows, maybe they can do the reverse, put a computer in a human body (Millenium Man) then you could become a cyber pimp(tm)...
Imperial technology (http://www.imperialtech.com/) has had these drives available for years, and in configurations up to 12 gigs. Saw this link on www.scsi.org...
Coders have contests like this all the time, especially in Finland where they have 4k and I've even seen 256 byte competitions. They turn out some amazing stuff, but these competitions have been going on for a very long time, and I suspect the first of such competition in this new field will suck. Check out Scene.Org for these 4k demos.
