    (20 billion (dollars) * 100 (cents/dollar)) / 300 million (Americans)... ...is about $66 per American by my math. This is not even taking into account the substantial portion of Americans who pay no taxes.

    What is the problem with cross compiling?

    Unless of course you are taking about using your handheld as a development platform (say for when you are in a remote location). However if you are just talking about app development... there is no point in native compilation.

    One can definitely find a replacement tech job in a week. A replacement tech job they want/like/is satisfying....? That sometimes takes the better part of a career.

    Freeze a bunch of bacteria and DNA into particles the size of a grain of sand. Build thousands of probes that carry several hundred kg of this material, and launch them in all directions.

    Once they get out of the suns gravity well, they spray the material as they travel along.

    Maybe just for fun aim the probe itself to achieve orbit around a G class star, and hope the residue eventually makes its way to a habitable planet.

    In 100 million years or so (not that long in galactic terms) Earth life might take hold somewhere else.

    This is not very friendly for any other life out there.

    With current technology, if we launched now we would probably end up in a situation where the relative motion of the star away from us would out run our spacecraft. Sure for now the star might be moving towards us... but by the time we got halfway it's orbit might be moving away from us again.

    One would think that the linker would eliminate most of this. Not sure about the unspecified "unfixed and seemingly minor issues which collectively represent security vulnerabilities."

    As far was the warnings go - most of those that I see are in the modules, not the kernel itself.

    Boots faster. Is more stable. Uses less memory resources. Windows networking seems to work better. Seemless integration with the kids XBox.

    I seem to have much more luck developing drivers on 8.1 as well - far less error check screens (more a function of me learning the DDK), also at the user level ETW seems rather more robust. Windbg also seems to be more stable when running on 8.1.

    Also, I like the UI better (on the desktop) - I largely ignore the metro screen or whatever it is called.

    I think the "at least the end-user isn't restricted from fixing bugs when they occur" part is what the rejoinder was referring to.

    For a long time I thought that... then I actually tried Windows 8.1.

    It is not bad actually, and far better than 7 in every way that I can tell.
