  1. Fans not so soft on my MBP on smcFanControl — Cool Your MacBook Pro · · Score: 1

I am trying this program and at first set the fan speeds to 3000 RPM as the OP suggested. That resulted in what I consider fairly loud fan noise. So now I'm trying 2000 RPM. It is still audible compared to the near silent default at 1000 RPM. I'm not sure the noise is worth the extra cooling, as a prefer to put my notebook on a table when I use it.

  2. Ripoff of Backpack? on Google Introduces Page Creator · · Score: 1

I can't get through to the "Google Page Creator" to really check this out, but it sounds like a ripoff of the incredibly useful Backpack by 37signals which (surprise) uses Ajax as well (through Ruby on Rails).

  3. HDCP Already Exists On Current HD TVs on HighDef Content to Require New Monitors · · Score: 2, Informative

Remember the limitation here is on computer monitors. I don't plan to watch Blu-Ray discs on my computer, I've got a dedicated HDTV in front of my couch for that. Most HiDef TVs (plasmas, LCD, DLP, CRT) have supported HDCP for about 2 years. So unless you have one of the early ones with only component connections, you should be fine.

    "5.5 oz" = 156 grams
    "3/4 of a pound" = 340 grams
    "5.6 ounces" = 159 grams

  9. Re:Next killer app? on Next Generation Mail Clients Reviewed · · Score: 1

The article says that email is the killer app, not the next killer app of the Internet. Though I guess if you only get one legitimate message every few weeks, it isn't an important communications tool to you like it is for the rest of us.

  13. Re:Safari on Windows on Microsoft Kills Off Mac IE, Blames Safari · · Score: 1

Widespread awareness of Mozilla doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. Apple may have enough clout and buzz that if they released Safari on Windows, it may have more impact than Mozilla has had thus far.

I am currrently happy using Mozilla Firebird as my primary browser, but still have to use Explorer occasionally on pages that aren't standards compliant. At least with the new Google Toolbar beta, I can use Explorer when I have to and have popups blocked!

  14. Re:Some features I would like to see on Netscape Founder Says Web Browsing Innovation Dead · · Score: 1

This feature is great in theory. In practice , however, it is not that useful yet since it requires prefetching hints to be coded on the current page (e.g. ) to 'read ahead' to the stuff on the next page. Since Explorer (the dominant browser) doesn't support prefetching, there are a scant number of sites that actually contain prefetching hints, rendering the feature almost useless for the time being.

  15. Safari on Windows on Microsoft Kills Off Mac IE, Blames Safari · · Score: 1

Now all we need is Safari on Windows, and we'll see if Microsoft can put up a decent fight and innovate in the browser domain again.

  16. $7500 to fill up the iPod on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 2, Interesting

I used to think $500 was a lot for an mp3 player (thinking that was the only expense because mp3's are free, right?).

Now that we are expected to pay $1 for each song, the $500 for the top of the line iPod is nothing compared to the $7500 you would have to put down just to fill the damned thing!

Seems like there's something wrong about this picture.

  17. fatchunks blows fat chunks on Where Indie Artists Get Everything · · Score: 4, Interesting

This service doesn't add much to what's already out there. You have to pay them $60 for the first year, just to get a subdomain listing that shows your CDs, links to your website, and lets people order your stuff. Then, if somebody does order something, you get an email and have to process the order and send it out. The only thing they do is handle the monetary transaction.

How is this any better than musicians setting up their own site and using paypal (which takes out a lower percentage for credit card charges)?

This doesn't seem like a revolution, just a way to make money off wannabe musicians that think they might sell something.

  18. Algorithm needs to be normalized on Analysis of Netflix's DVD Allocation System · · Score: 2, Interesting

The thing that kills me is that Netflix apparently doesn't take into account the number of movies you can check out at a time (it costs more $/month to get more movies at one time). So as this clever analysis points out, if you pay more to get 5 movies at a time, then you are more likely to never get popular movies.

It seems that a better algorithm would normalize the number of movies rented in each billing cycle by the number paid to be rented at one time.
