It may not matter where you work once you get the job, but if you want to find a tech job, there's just so much opportunity in the NYC area. I guess living here isn't for everyone, but I haven't looked back since I moved out 8 years ago.
Everyone in my office (20 people or so) got the sony tivo for Xmas 2000. I've added an extra 80Gb Drive to mine (including replacing the built in fan and drilling holes in the case for better cooling, and neither mine nor anyone else's is "buggy" or locks up. It's been rock solid for 18 months now.
I'll give you the slow bit, but generally only when I'm re-arranging my 30-40 season passes. Other than that, it's eminently usable.
we've had one in our office for a few months now (the japanese one, easily bought on canal st. in NYC) and frankly it's not that special. Evolutionary, not revolutionary. Of course, I just played some racing game (grand turisimo?) that had terrible control and street fighter 3 which was laughably easy.
The fact that there was some form of legal judgement is news. And it does belong on slashdot.. I was mostly referring to the link, where it looks like a regular news story.. Of course, it is MSNBC, what should I expect?
Er- I love how he says that packets can move at twice the temporal density. Ignoring the units mismatch (does this mean I can now read slashdot at twice the pressure, or get in my car and do 0-60 at twice the volume?), isn't this just a marketroid way of saying twice as fast?
The whole thing strikes me as self-congradulatory drivel. He may have found a way to do something useful/cool, but it's hard to see through all the bull splattered on the page.
Anyone know where I can download some "muzak" for this, so I can put my callers on hold and let them listen to some nice, soothing, RIAA approved non-infringing, no royalties needed tunes?
Why is the House Small Business Committee holding the hearing? Which small businesses are involved? Seems to me that this issue is only really important to some of the biggest businesses on the planet...
So does apple feel that it can go after anyone who dares to use a bit of semi-transparent colored plastic on a piece of hardware? I can see that I suppose, I mean, using clear plastic to enclose electronic components is an obvious innovation. I bet microsoft is pissed they didn't think of it first.
Because it's always been up to the select few that realize the greater ramifications of a person's or people's actions and protect them from themselves.
I imagine, that if asked, the people of this community would say that they value the freedom of speech, but they seem unable to understand the freedom issues in this instance, or unwilling to.
What does this mean? It means that they are not equipped with the mental or emotional tools to see this for what it is, and are going to make a mistake that their children and childrens children are going to pay for. At lease someone is trying to do _something_ about this.
Let's not forget that we live in a republic, or at best a representative democracy (not very representative any more, I know) precicely for this reason. Because while any one person can be intelligent, groups of people are universally stupid, and can't be entirely trusted to sanely govern themselves. therefore, we elect people who we feel have our best interests at heart to make these decisions for us. Sometimes, someone will appoint themselves guardian of a peoples interest, often in opposition to the "chosen" mouthpiece. Is this a good thing? who knows. It's had both good and bad effects in the past. but I do believe it's a needed thing.
I have a ca-unicenter disc, with redhat 6.0 on it. doing a plain vanilla "Server" install, on plain vanilla intel-everything server hardware, then installing the unicenter RPM's according to directions, a whole bunch of the stuff doesn't work. The Big thing being the database it uses, so you can't really do _anything_ with it.
It's really a piece of garbage.
Also, IIRC, they have a really twisted pricing model, basically, the more powerful your server is, the more you have to pay to run the exact same executable on it. How fucked up is that? Apparently, if you can spend twice as much on the server as someone else, you should spend twice as much for their product.
If it had been a real problem, that we managed to avert by all the money and effort spent on it, there would have been at least a few major screw ups. What are the chances that we would nail every single major bug??? Since nothing happened, I submit for your approval that there was never any wide-scale problem to begin with.
Now, as to where that money and effort really went...
I have a spellcaster ISA ISDN modem that I used until I got my DSL. It's ok, haven't tried it on a newer 2.2 kernel. I had some problems with it, but nothing major. Be forewarned, though, it doesn't use ISDN4Linux interface. The interface is proprietary (the code is available, though)
A friend of mine got both the redhat _and_ va letters, even though he's not really a contributor.. He works with O/S, but he's not a coder.. We believe it's because he shares the last name of someone who contributed an article to linux journal (It's not a common last name) and the contributors to LJ were put on the list.. He also happened to get this guy's check for the article ($100 if I remember correctly)
As someone else pointed out, the code itself might not be terribly usefull, but it could show how some challenges were handled.. And even if you can't use the code w/o permission, you can still use it to build a compatible product..
Either way, with some of the recent happenings (*cough* decss *cough*) It might be a good idea for developers working on (usually misunderstood) controversial software to be able to use encrypted voice communication as well as encrypted text.. I fully expect this to become more important as people get more high speed links to the home, and developers start to take advantage of VOIP, Especially on projects where the members span the globe..
Frankly, I don't know if there ever really was any opportunity.. He has shown again and again a complete inability to engage in rational discourse. Perhaps he should hire a publicist.. But of course, he would never do that, on the chance that someone else's name might appear before his..
Mr. Pub. l. Cist, speaker for JP, said today "Mr V. has instructed me to respond to that accusation with 'Oh Yeah! So's your Mom!'"
Yeah.. I see that happening.. In which case, I'm sure he will continue to sink deeper and deeper into his own private psychosis.

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
I have one of these. It helped my wrist pain, a lot. I have one both at work and at home. It works fine for games, be it counterstrike or civ IV.

I signed up for this, and the calls (I used to get 5-6 every Saturday and Sunday, 1-2 other weeknights) stopped entirely.
Great service. easy to sign up for, no hassles.
Heh. The AMC Empire 25 and the Lowes E-walk are directly across the street from one another. 42nd and 8th in NYC. Maybe I'll see it once at each :P
I get WB and UPN via DirecTV in NYC..
Because Paramount owns the rights to the Trek franchise. ergo, United _Paramount_ Network
one penny to both the user and the ISP.
5k mail, 5 cents to the user, 5 cents to the ISP.

why is a 3dfx PR release being treated as news? it's so 1-sided I'm almost nauseous.

IIRC, mesa is the OGL library behind GLX, and is part of the Xfree distribution now. I think the author may be confused. Am I mis-remembering here?
good one. I completely missed the opportunity to make fun of metallica. nice save...

So, sometimes it's just dumb luck..
