  1. NYC is great for tech workers on A Tour of Googleplex East · · Score: 2, Informative

It may not matter where you work once you get the job, but if you want to find a tech job, there's just so much opportunity in the NYC area. I guess living here isn't for everyone, but I haven't looked back since I moved out 8 years ago.

I've added an extra 80Gb Drive to mine (including replacing the built in fan and drilling holes in the case for better cooling, and neither mine nor anyone else's is "buggy" or locks up. It's been rock solid for 18 months now.

I'll give you the slow bit, but generally only when I'm re-arranging my 30-40 season passes. Other than that, it's eminently usable.

The whole thing strikes me as self-congradulatory drivel. He may have found a way to do something useful/cool, but it's hard to see through all the bull splattered on the page.

Because it's always been up to the select few that realize the greater ramifications of a person's or people's actions and protect them from themselves.

I imagine, that if asked, the people of this community would say that they value the freedom of speech, but they seem unable to understand the freedom issues in this instance, or unwilling to.

What does this mean? It means that they are not equipped with the mental or emotional tools to see this for what it is, and are going to make a mistake that their children and childrens children are going to pay for. At lease someone is trying to do _something_ about this.

Let's not forget that we live in a republic, or at best a representative democracy (not very representative any more, I know) precicely for this reason. Because while any one person can be intelligent, groups of people are universally stupid, and can't be entirely trusted to sanely govern themselves. therefore, we elect people who we feel have our best interests at heart to make these decisions for us. Sometimes, someone will appoint themselves guardian of a peoples interest, often in opposition to the "chosen" mouthpiece. Is this a good thing? who knows. It's had both good and bad effects in the past. but I do believe it's a needed thing.

The Big thing being the database it uses, so you can't really do _anything_ with it.

It's really a piece of garbage.

Also, IIRC, they have a really twisted pricing model, basically, the more powerful your server is, the more you have to pay to run the exact same executable on it. How fucked up is that? Apparently, if you can spend twice as much on the server as someone else, you should spend twice as much for their product.
