Well, i think the main problem with most modern RTS games is that they are real time. The player with the fastest reactions (be it unit production, or even noticing an planned enemy attack) will almost always win, regardless of his strategy.
Opposing to that, look at the old Battle Isle for the Amiga.. it was turn based, but still could be player by two players simultanously, because it had a nice move/attack mode system. You had as much time as you needed to plan out your strategy, and pure reaction time isn't an advantage.

I think it's optimal this way. You could have a fusion-reactor running through the ship, and without gravity, it could actually be easier to contain the plasma. (remind you - the plasma is hold in place by strong magnetic fields to prevent it from touching the reactor walls - much easier if it already floats by itself!)
I'm not sure but I think the only reason MS uses extensions like.asf and.asx is A: marketing, newer extensions=new (better) tech. B: work into a more propietery arena, plenty of programs can play
Actually the extensions are pretty interchangeable - try it yourself! Rename any.asf/.asx file to.avi or even.wav, and the Mediaplayer will still play them! Amazingly the same isn't always true for the other direction, avi->asf/asx. Some Files only play sound, but don't show the video stream.
The link isn't there, but a quick use of backspace will show you that there are 3 files in the download directory. One of them, magically, is the 1.19 version... which, by the way, doesn't seem to run under Win2K.
I have one question since the original GB (or at least since the color ones) came up...
Why didn't anybody try to port some of the good old C64 Games to this little machines?
I've always dreamt of being able to play Elite, Bubble Bobble, Pirates, Commando, Boulderdash, or even Maniac Mansion on these small devices.
Can you imagine how *cool* Pirates on a gameboy color must look like?
The problem, of course, is that the long directory names they use are too hard to type, and there's no shortcut mechanism at all - you can't hit tab to complete the name, and you can't say "cd \progra*" to have the shell expand the name, because there's no file name expansion.
Of course there is. At least under Windows 2000.
Just download the TweakUI utility, and set the File/Directory completion keys under the Cmd tab. You could aswell make these settings with regedit. (and as you are used to linux, this shouldn't appear too arkward:)
ok, the '98 shell doesn't have this feature (and presumably ME lacks this too.), but the NT shell offers many new commands, that aren't available under 9x. (pipes for example)

the real carmack answered to me, and this was my first post to slashdot (therefore the malformed-html first version of my post)
must be my lucky day...:)

Has anybody noticed how strange some his statements are?
- Doom will be going back to DLLs, and will be using C++ (with the exception of the rendering code) instead of C
Hmm, i well remember the whole discussion about virtual machines, code security, mods running on different platforms without recompilation, etc... what happened to that? apart from it: can you imagine ID coding something in c++ ? I've yet to see something even vaguely OO from carmack.
- Single player is the absolute focus, and Carmack feels it will be their best single player experience to date.
Do you remember the leaked audio-interview from pre-q3 days? Carmack basically said, that single-player games suck from a money/replayability point of view. He even said that he wouldn't start a sp-game nowadays, because of the ever growing development time. (and could only be done right with a _massive_ devteam)
- The game and editor/tools are now combined. You'll be able to simply type doom.exe -editor for example (Or maybe even an in-game toggle)
In the same interview he said, that he doesn't like integrated editors, and will never do so.

doesn't zoom out far enough for me...
I mean, i just get around 3 or 4 buildings on the screen at once.. it's just unbeareable. In the old days you could see much more of the map at once.
Confining the player with this sort of fixed camera view seems to be a silly move - there's still the fog-of-war (tm) to limit your vision.

There's even another ethernet player project: visit www.kreapc.de, and here are some
pictures of the player.
all source code is GPL'ed.

didn't check for Win2000 compatibility, but here's a link to v1.19 http://www.demo.cs
