  2. everything old is new again on Voices From The Movie Line · · Score: 1

I am really, really old. Born in (gasp! wheeze!) the Kennedy Administration. When I was sixteenish I was denied legal entry to see 'Serpico' and was really pissed about it. Same with 'Last Tango in Paris' (wow....butter!) the year before, and others, more than I care to remember. Point is, I survived to see them, and many others; I also swore that I would support kids who want to see movies of their choice when I got 'old.' So, here I am, agreeing with the overall Katzian theme that the kids are alright, BUT must we really devote so much bandwidth to this? Yes, I know that I am contributing to the problem rite now, but....gosh!

ps: 'affect' should have been 'effect'.....just to show I was paying attention

Finally, the applications field will change....

Does anyone agree with me that the future of 'applications' will be delineated by 'browsers' that will run locally and 'appliances' that will be internet accessible and only store user files locally? (babelfish is one appliance example...employease is probably a better one) Using this model, won't the ability of any OS to run any specific application software on the desktop be of diminished value?

  7. Re:What is a "Portal" ?? on Red Hat Portal Picking up Steam · · Score: 1

I am a little fuzzy on this as well, although I had thought that a good working definition would have been 'a website that is a collection of links to other informative resources, bundled together with as much original content as is economically possible' with an example being yahoo.com

However, under that definition, /. would not be defined as a portal.....

I would bet that leo will be too old to play anakin in the second movie. more probable will be someone about the age and look of a ryan phillippe. even more likely IMHO will be an unknown (to us, today) cali rent-a-hunk that will break big with episode two in the same way that jake lloyd became anakin version 1.0

  12. G E B and me on Godel, Escher, Bach -- 20th Anniversary Edition · · Score: 1

My personal GEB experience: When I was finally forced to accept a degree, after ten years of studious avoidance, the degree I accepted was of the English Lit variety, as opposed to something really useful like CS or Mathematics. However, ten years at the academy did allow me to drink with members of a wide variety of Disciplines; I did in fact read most of GEB and chatted about it ad nauseum. After that bit of extended research I can testify that it is just as likely that a student of CS, AI, math, etc, has read GEB as it is likely that an English Lit student has successfully read James Joyce, and for exactly the same reasons and with similar levels of deliberate obfuscation.

all too true....and if everyone learned to drive in a '62 Chevy pickup w/ three-on-the-column and no power steering they would never be in a vehicle that they could not operate.....but nobody wants to take the time or effort necessary to accomplish this, because the likelihood that they will ever be stuck in a car with a standard transmission (or a CLI) is (seemingly) so small that it does not appear to be a worthwhile enterprise.
