also remem that the winmodems "that seem to appear in every shipping pc" are like "a free air freshener with every new car purchased" from a local dealer. oh yay, but, are the bulk of them worth a parade? no, they are merely "look, it's got a modem" and not, "look, you very own cisco router and free t1 connection." they are cheap. plain and simply.
I think the closest there is out there currently is the work being done on porting outlook to gnome. at least, i say closest in that outlook sorta lets you collaborate with not a lot of fuss.
it refuses to do anything but call Dr. Watson to come over and play on the screen when i try to install, so does this mean it will Blue Screen when i try to d/l and install it on my win98 @ home?
how does the linux install work? very fast? hope it will go better than this M$ WinBloz NT Install even attempts to pretend to go.
Hoping to get flamed for this (don't ya just love troll msgs?) -drach
All that has been decided is that M$ is a monopoly. I have yet to hear what will happen now that M$ is a monopoly. If the Justice Dept. goes along similar grounds, and redoes the AT&T thing, then we will have many many many more probs IMHO. To say M$ is a monopoly is to say rain is wet. However, M$ has one thing going for them that the entire group of linux programmers does not. USER-ABILITY. Most non programmers feel that M$ is "perfect" because it is easy to use. They have gotten used to "My Computer" and "C DRIVE (C:)" and "CD-ROM (D:)" to be willing to change. Most home users dont know what it means to login, and 95% of gamers, believe it or not, dont want to play quake. Our problem, as Open Source Developers, is to make our os's as desirable as windows. Then this development with the legal system will be worthwhile. Until then, just imagine, M$-Corporate (office, winnt), M$-Home (win9x, games), and M$-Affiliated (hardware, misc.). If you think M$ (pro-end_user) software is buggy and limited, try having the same software, written by three different groups, who have no "real" reason to work for one another or to share end gains. If M$-Corporate was to spin off and make a killing in the Enterprise market , and M$-Home was to die off to MacOS/Linux/FreeBSD, and M$-Affiliated was offered to be bought out by Logitech, do you think M$-Corporate would have a need to keep M$-Affiliated from being bought out, or M$-Home from going under?
well, i know i just wrought a convoluted path, so feel free to flame me, but also don't think "Yay, its over" or "i have hated M$ for 5 years" and also, try to think about the discussion when you "first post" because you may just get flamed and down rated....

what was the previous ver number? i was surfing the other night at about 7:30 and saw this ver on a site and d/l'd it, then log in here today to see this . . . wierd . . .
so my post is about what versions have been, who knows where source is, and what is latest dev build, -
meant to add that i saw where it said that the articles/books/etc would remain free so long as credit was given to the original author and so long as the original text was not changed . . . yadda yadda ya
kinda makes you wonder about all those sci-fi stories you read as a kid doesnt it? it will be interesting to see what happens when these things get put in robots. Who knows, maybe we will have inhouse robots and self driving cars before 2010? -
most of those hard core proggers that you refer to either a) didnt have the tools to create the UI, or b) like me, hate trying to understand why the "research" user thinks that the icon on the desktop should be neon green and blood red, but in side the program, the background should be deep blue and peach. i just dont get it, are they morons . . . ? -(use to be a user once, then i realized how i was wasting my life;))
So are there any non-Delphi users that would consider using a Linux port? well, as a 3 year's experience vb/c/c++/java developer, i havent yet had the experience of working with delphi, to me, it would be a great introduction to the language, if i understood the white pap. about it and if you consider all ways of programming a language (yes, this does include good ole batch files// script files of other natures) personally i dont feel as tho enough ppl know about either linux or it's ability as far as a user base is concerned. but as the article which was posted yesterday stated, "Linux and other Open Source Operating Systems are designed for the programmers who write them, not the users who will use them." If we are currently the only ones writing the apps, i do believe that no users will realize that we have totally redesigned an interface, rewritten an app, or even learned a new language because we wanted them to do well on the newest desktop Operating System. but please oh please dont anyone ever say, "try this computer which is a lot like windows." Unless you also think it is a good idea to say, grow me a pineapple from this apple tree. (btw: email me to find out how to grow a pineapple on an apple tree . . . (hint: splice the limbs . ..))
aol has long since been discussing a port, the problem is userability. No users currently want to use any opensource o/s, because it is geared to a programmers angle of usage, and most programmers use either dsl or t? for their lines when they can get it. so . . .
Most users I've seen refuse to use the start menu. It is just not "convienent" so what do we admin have to do? we have to give them a gd icon on the desktop . . .
and another thing, since when do users to ignorant to learn windows get to demand that we give them something else, ie: at work, the previous admin before me and the current fella happened to like norton navigator a lot. dont get me wrong, it is nice, but he trained all those who are here to never touch my computer. . . huh? so now if i tell them to goto my computer and then . . . they just stop, and are completely lost
rotflmao @ this obscene [interpretable] reference to HitchHikers Guide [sp?]

so does this mean that certain books will be able to be published and not need permission to be copied? (not copyrighted)
what about plagarism? will our teachers be able to spot these new uncopyrighted works?
kinda makes you wonder about all those sci-fi stories you read as a kid doesnt it? it will be interesting to see what happens when these things get put in robots. Who knows, maybe we will have inhouse robots and self driving cars before 2010?
