the point of the matter is that most vb programmers do not know basic programming skills, like maybe code formatting? how easy is it to look at formatted code and see where loops enter and exit, or where an if then statement breaks to the else (forgive me for not trying to show a decent example on the slashdot comment system, that would be like trying to snail-mail someone an accurate copy of your dna structure.
the reason why most of us "elitist h4X0r5" claim such praises for c/c++ is that c/c++ is portable. when was the last time you were able to open that labview stuff on mac AND linux AND sco-unix AND windows, without having to cry for days? You were writing about intending to build a system and you only talked like you would install one HD. Unless you are planning on running SCSI, I would rethink that idea. Personally, and from the research I have done (plus real world experience), I would install at least a second HD for your swap files. It needs to be at least as fast as the boot/application hard drive, and preferably, the disk does not need to be used for anything else. The second condition is to put it primary on the secondary IDE. Again, DO NOT USE IT FOR ANYTHING ELSE. And if you use the cdrw on the same IDE channel as the Primary HD, then your system will run incredibly fast compared to others. The trick is to set up both OS's to SWAP each on a separate partition on the secondary HD.
Okay, well, I have been quite redundant without saying much. And a stripped down version of windows impossible? Funny windows 1 - 95b managed to work just fine WITHOUT internet explorer. And NT was just fine until 4.0 came out. I mean what functionality does IE really bring to the Operating System.
Apparently you are not as big a nerd as some of us on slashdot, or you would realize that about 65-80% of MS's dll's have or are related to web functionality. One of the reason's for this is that MS intends their New Technology (notice that this name implies that they are trying to get away from MS-Dos and win9x) Operating System's to be more or less a) POSIX compliant, although it seems like no O/S is as of yet there. Back to my point though, see, with the direction that MS is taking with their O/S, the part about ease of use combined with the power to customize and other conveniences of an Expert System, they want to allow users to enter any (mostly) permanent storage address and the system be able to retrieve that information: web addresses, network addresses, system drives, floppy's, tapes, cdroms, dvd's, etc. And here you come bashing something as frivolous as my ability to use solely the keyboard (except for games) when i use XP. Who needs a mouse? I vim in *nix. Who needs a mouse? So, all of a sudden, because NT's structure allows me to connect to any file, anywhere, anytime (assuming proper physical connections exist), then they have a crappy product that is impossible to understand?
And here's to the rest of/.'rs. Has anyone here ever installed only MS professional products on a system? Absolutely no third part software? No Imaging, Photoshop, disk scanners, unsigned device drivers, lotus, or any server software that is non-ms (and btw: it seems like their IIS is non-ms, don't know the story on that one) and seen how the box runs? It is the most beautiful sight in the world. Especially system combos. So Windows 2k with Office 2k Prem and MS Vis Studio 5/6 Enterprise, or how about XP with XP ofc and MS Vis 6/7 Enterprise? These systems have never given me one day's grief. Of course, i use the MS Roadshow FREE copy of the o/s, which is a 5-user site license.
and back to the original complaint. The problem with the filesystem thing is that everything that you are complaining about is called a SHARED LIBRARY. that means that Explorer (ease of use, start menu thingy, etc.) uses the same thing as Internet Explorer. My comment about customizability can be seen at www.litestep.net

IIRC, if the rotation of earth slows, the equator will get narrower, the poles will seem taller, and then the earth will change it's axial tilt. why doesn't the article provide any information or links to this information, or am i mistaken. If you don't personally believe these facts, go buy yourself a few tops, and spin them, and see what they do vs size. then smash some with a hammer and see how the spin.
however, does anyone have any proof to refute this information?
and if we have to wait a few thousand millenia to tell if their theories are correct, then aren't we being whistleblowers trying to get the information out now?!?
okay, as was already pointed out, it is more a matter of seeing what the javascript strings say when put together, and google doesn't INTERPRET the pages on the (fly/read/bot-scour), it just checks the TEXT of the html. The doubleclick idea is pretty good, except for then google would be discriminating against doubleclick (and any other banner-ad sites, from which a good portion of the web is financed, or at least the parts of the web where we spend all our time, look at slashdot for instance, see the pretty banners?).
now then, pop-(ups/outs/unders), broken links, and a few others would be easy to scan for, but look at all the sites that have something useful to offer that use the code the way it was meant to be written. maybe what you meant to say was, "pages where pop-up adds are used after the/body tag is present in the document."
something else that you're suggestion leaves out is all the MS office published documents, which do their best to conform to all the standards, but which also are generated on the fly by not too superior coders, and who wouldn't know the difference between html and rtf if they had a map, a reference work, and a guide.
Now, maybe it would be possible for us to get with all the people who have genuinely useful web pages and tell them to put in a tag called just because they deserve to be left out of the google weenie roast. but i won't tell you the real tag, 'cos only the pr0n webmasters are supposed to know it;].
get my point yet? the only truly useful thing to do would be to find the pages and sites which serve a goodly number of jpgs or gifs and to have the webmasters of those sites which are not pr0n register with google. google then makes a database of "good" picture laden sites, and as it scours a webpage, it loads the database and compares the address to see if it is an accepted graphic-ful page. otherwise, it cuts it to the bottom of the list, under a category of "Pornographic Material is most likely to follow from this point on. Please do not continue unless you really wish to see Pornographic materials."
so now let's examine the results of such an operation. well, google would have to allocate a certain amount of space in memory to list those "good" urls, "bad" urls and "undetermined, undefined, unchecked, or generally unknown" urls. then it has to concantenate all three lists together and present them in standard google form. all this, and we still expect it to run with minimal amounts of memory requirments/cpu cycles on their computers/servers, and in the same 1/4 sec or less times that we are so used to.
so after that little rant, sorry about that, you did have a good idea, it's just a little harder to implement a scanner for things that are perfectly legit methods of using html (except for that non-cleanup after/body)

DOES LINUX OFFER SUPPORT FOR MY 3DFX VooDoo3 3500 TV AGP VIDEO CARD?
I apologize for the bold text
And what about all the other legacy hardware, or the point and click of it all, or plug and play? Okay, granted, what most people miss are the two most basic elements of windows that they don't even know exist, the registry (please let's don't get into an argument over why MS decided that it was vitally important to store every setting in one location, granted it does a good job, but it has a lot of security flaws) and the MS provided device drivers (yeah, so MS doesn't write all of them, but they do make sure the one's they provide [on their cd-roms] work with the system, and they do provide for most situations up to release date). But this is not really my beef with the win-lin debate.
really, i only miss one thing, and that is a standardized interface. Okay, here me out, before you start flaming me on the gtk/qt/gimp/who-gives-a-f*** front. I may be one hell of a programmer, but trying to figure out every known interface api is a pain in the arse, especially when I am not 100% sure what is out there. most of the time, i just try and make it work. but this seems to me to be the one problem that everyone has with the X desktop. Yeah, the interface is strictly a non-windows thing, and that is a strike at MS, but c'mon, can't we at least make them all look alike?
Please don't get me wrong. KDE does not need to look like Gnome does not need to look like Windows does not need to look like Mac (lack of commas intentional), but can't X windows at least share some splinter of similarity besides the blooming shapes?
I could care less about the games, especially since I can always play quake and xbill (gratuitous x-bill reference here for the karma whoring), but when i cannot use my pc for what i BUILT it for, i get really upset. I built my system for video capture and playing movies ('cos i got this lil bitty room and my mini-atx in the tiny case with no gratuitous onboard [motherboard] components, with dvd and 3dfx vid/capture let's me get rid of a bulky tv, and the sweet lil rack it all sits on also holds all my cd/dvds and my gamestations, all in about 4 sq ft of space), and by golly, if linux won't let me use it for that, then i gotta use windows for that. If i am gonna be forced to use windows for that, then i will continue to use windows to play my (original's beat the look-alikes 6 3/4 days a week) maxis and sid-meier's games
so if anyone can point me to a fully functional driver for my 3dfx voodoo3 3500 tv agp tuner card with svideo and rca hookups, plus the video player that does real time capture, plus a really sweet video editing sweet, on a par with what comes in the windows installation (except for vid editing, for which i use adobe premier), then i will continue to mount this singular frontal assault on the win-lin debate
So what they're saying is that they don't really want to pay licensing costs, b.cos, IMHO, linux is the same base architecture as what they have been running for years, i.e. Unix. They are both still fully compliant POSIX os's, right?
and he picked Linux over Microsoft Corp.'s Windows because Linux is "much safer if you're on the Internet." Ellison is a longtime Microsoft foe. Says it all.
Ellison said. "You'll see us taking full support responsibility for Linux," he said. "If you're running the app server and something goes wrong, call us and we'll come and fix it." But not for pr0n caused cache problem's, or hmmm?
said. However, "in a couple of years it's not inconceivable that we could be recommending [Intel-based servers] for everything," Ellison said. "It's not out of the question." just unlikely
now for my one cents worth how much of this is going to affect linux? most people outside of the corporate IT support dept have nothing to do with oracle, much less know anything about it. I don't see this as causing a gigantic stir, or at least, it wouldn't have, had Oracle not announced it. Maybe it is the more political thing to do, and I am a programmer, not a politician.
sometimes, i think it is better to just stick with the Apple ][e BASIC and design moving lines with the monkey support console
these posts as possible on my crappy a$$ connection in eastern alabama, using a dual boot win-rhlinux machine, i have a few suggestions. however, the odds of you getting this far in the conversation are slim at best.
Why not set up a farm with multiple servers, some for real, some for M$, and some for qt? i realize that this is not always the most efficient way to do things, but you do actually give more people more choices, and if you are really using a quality setup, and want to hit 100% of the market, this seems to be the best way to do things, according to my own limited knowledge.
So, assuming you can convince the boss to let you set up a min. of 3 new boxes, you would probably need two apples and an M$. i would prefer two linux boxes for apache (based on small server memory footprints, fast connections, which means better throughput on binary transfers), and an apple or two to do the imaging on, and an M$ to do the mpg4 proprietary for wmp.

you could probably contact voodoo or ati, haupage, or a coupla others, but i don't think they normally produce such an item.

It's frightening, the idea that Linux and its applications could fall victim to its own success. But wherever there's money, big money as there is now in Linux, there is someone very clever who will try to take it away.
Corporations and open-source development are for the most part diametrically opposed as to organization and goals. Neither is bad; indeed, neither is better and both can be abused. But when the two come together, it's oil and vinegar--it needs a little shaking up before it can go onto the salad. And these are indeed the salad days of Linux.
It's not difficult at all, though, to imagine the companies that make commercial software for other platforms looking upon Linux as some kind of odd little brother. And, with a smile, saying, "I'm very idealistic. I want to make the world a better place for me to live in."
I think that this is fairly accurate. Personally, i don't believe Open Source can exist so much with current corporations, but with some work and some, "pardon me, can we do peaceful business sometime," truly powerful things can come out of opensource development. all i know is that i agree --drach out

And so I don't have to fight the lameness filter, I am not going to post an ASCII diagram of the system setup, however, if you email me, subject Initial System Setup Design (or something similar so I won't think it's spam), I would be glad to help you in any way that I can. /.'rs. Of course, i use the MS Roadshow FREE copy of the o/s, which is a 5-user site license.
okay, you addressed an issue of which you are not fully aware, IMHO. You said:
And here's to the rest of
and back to the original complaint. The problem with the filesystem thing is that everything that you are complaining about is called a SHARED LIBRARY. that means that Explorer (ease of use, start menu thingy, etc.) uses the same thing as Internet Explorer.
My comment about customizability can be seen at www.litestep.net

maybe the police are the "known criminals"

If you don't personally believe these facts, go buy yourself a few tops, and spin them, and see what they do vs size. then smash some with a hammer and see how the spin.
however, does anyone have any proof to refute this information?
and if we have to wait a few thousand millenia to tell if their theories are correct, then aren't we being whistleblowers trying to get the information out now?!?
okay, as was already pointed out, it is more a matter of seeing what the javascript strings say when put together, and google doesn't INTERPRET the pages on the (fly/read/bot-scour), it just checks the TEXT of the html. The doubleclick idea is pretty good, except for then google would be discriminating against doubleclick (and any other banner-ad sites, from which a good portion of the web is financed, or at least the parts of the web where we spend all our time, look at slashdot for instance, see the pretty banners?).

now then, pop-(ups/outs/unders), broken links, and a few others would be easy to scan for, but look at all the sites that have something useful to offer that use the code the way it was meant to be written. maybe what you meant to say was, "pages where pop-up adds are used after the
something else that you're suggestion leaves out is all the MS office published documents, which do their best to conform to all the standards, but which also are generated on the fly by not too superior coders, and who wouldn't know the difference between html and rtf if they had a map, a reference work, and a guide.
Now, maybe it would be possible for us to get with all the people who have genuinely useful web pages and tell them to put in a tag called just because they deserve to be left out of the google weenie roast. but i won't tell you the real tag, 'cos only the pr0n webmasters are supposed to know it
get my point yet? the only truly useful thing to do would be to find the pages and sites which serve a goodly number of jpgs or gifs and to have the webmasters of those sites which are not pr0n register with google. google then makes a database of "good" picture laden sites, and as it scours a webpage, it loads the database and compares the address to see if it is an accepted graphic-ful page. otherwise, it cuts it to the bottom of the list, under a category of "Pornographic Material is most likely to follow from this point on. Please do not continue unless you really wish to see Pornographic materials."
so now let's examine the results of such an operation. well, google would have to allocate a certain amount of space in memory to list those "good" urls, "bad" urls and "undetermined, undefined, unchecked, or generally unknown" urls. then it has to concantenate all three lists together and present them in standard google form. all this, and we still expect it to run with minimal amounts of memory requirments/cpu cycles on their computers/servers, and in the same 1/4 sec or less times that we are so used to.
so after that little rant, sorry about that, you did have a good idea, it's just a little harder to implement a scanner for things that are perfectly legit methods of using html (except for that non-cleanup after

Some of the other things which I have not seen mentioned (well, not very much so far, which is not to say a whole lot):
If i am gonna be forced to use windows for that, then i will continue to use windows to play my (original's beat the look-alikes 6 3/4 days a week) maxis and sid-meier's games
so if anyone can point me to a fully functional driver for my 3dfx voodoo3 3500 tv agp tuner card with svideo and rca hookups, plus the video player that does real time capture, plus a really sweet video editing sweet, on a par with what comes in the windows installation (except for vid editing, for which i use adobe premier), then i will continue to mount this singular frontal assault on the win-lin debate
thank you for your time
So what they're saying is that they don't really want to pay licensing costs, b.cos, IMHO, linux is the same base architecture as what they have been running for years, i.e.
"It's not out of the question." just unlikely
now for my one cents worth
how much of this is going to affect linux? most people outside of the corporate IT support dept have nothing to do with oracle, much less know anything about it.
Oh yeah, three servers?
these posts as possible on my crappy a$$ connection in eastern alabama, using a dual boot win-rhlinux machine, i have a few suggestions. however, the odds of you getting this far in the conversation are slim at best.
So, assuming you can convince the boss to let you set up a min. of 3 new boxes, you would probably need two apples and an M$. i would prefer two linux boxes for apache (based on small server memory footprints, fast connections, which means better throughput on binary transfers), and an apple or two to do the imaging on, and an M$ to do the mpg4 proprietary for wmp.
it's possible, although monetarily feasible i don't know. the thing is the tuning itself, or else as someone else said, just capture the whole incoming set of signals. the thing about the current system is that it is like getting a multi-page pdf file. if you have ever tried to use photoshop to open the pdf, it says, what page. it doesn't show all at once. same thing with the television. it has to know where to look.
you could probably contact voodoo or ati, haupage, or a coupla others, but i don't think they normally produce such an item.
now, two or three video inputs and a coax splitter would enable this easily, and you're only talking $35-40 per pci input card.
just an idea
true. i have a amdk62-450 with two hard drives (for swap file purposes) and a voodoo 3 3500 and a dvd drive. i can use my internet ready computer to display far superior graphics on a tv or tv on a monitor, and can play games, switch os/s, record tv, or any of about a hundred other options. If you really want to have all the features of a webtv or tivo unit with all the power of the internet, seriously consider using something like what i have. however, for my mom and dad, this will be fine.
my question is, since i have gotten them use to linux, specifically using gnome, what's the primary UI for this thing? command prompt? surely not. kde? please no. Gnome? it'll hang more than you can surf the net. i know they said mozilla based browser, so does it use X?
so many questions, so few answers that i saw.
and where is the price? (to quote someone else)

and as such, it has gone the way of sci-fi. The article's intents mean that they have isolated the gene which stimulates caffiene growth. However, with all the talk on /. lately about the Human Genome Project, sci-fi oriented minds are going the other direction with this information. instead of admiring the fact that the scientists can grow decaf coffee by REMOVING the gene, /.'rs are interested in INSERTING the gene.
to pull off some other's analogies that i have seen. "if you code this way" then does REMOVING useless code ever HURT the application? Now then, take this the other way. Look at feature creep. Does this ALWAYS HELP the program? As a lead programmer for a large company, I have had more complaints about our GUIs having too many features, and how can we keep the mem req's down. So we are constantly combatting Feature Creep, b.c ThisManager wants MORE features, and ThatManager wants LESS features. Who Decides?
also, the same comment has been on several threads, and may or may not bear repeating (i think it does, obv.) **seeNote** if the body gets that chemical on a repetitive basis, it will ignore the chemical. i would personally like to see a model of DEVICE controllable by remote which is minute in size, and can produce chemicals by way of taking particles out of the bloodstream. i think this would be helpful. because as it can filter out chemicals, it could reinsert them also. or maybe have it intercept in the intestines?
-Note- don't you hate when the boss sends you out of the building on an errand when you are in the middle of a post?
Could it be that there just arent enough hours in the day to bother reading the really nasty books?

At the same time, do you know how to change the oil in your car? How about the spark plugs, wires, distributor, etc? As far as gaskets and some belts/chains go, they are generally deep within the engine, and so much more of a pain to change, but, i think you see where i am coming from. It is not required information, but it does make it a lot easier/cheaper to own said vehicle when you know how to do basic things to it. Not to mention pride of ability. So for those same men/women out there who can change their own oil, check their fluid levels, and know the basics of how an engine works, why are those same people so scared of computers (ie, "I didnt want to mess it up"). Someone, generally dad, took the time to explain the processes, and now the people know. I think all people should know basic computer components and terminology. They may not need to understand what makes the difference between PC66 and PC133 SDRAM, or what is different between SDRAM and RDRAM. But they should know that RAM is as important to a computer as CPU, the should be able to identify a cpu and differentiate it from a, say, hard drive. they should be able to clean the dust from their mobo's once every so often. they should know that certain companies have a tendancy to produce good software, and certain companies have a tendency to publish bad software. agreed, we /.'rs tend to know the difference, and we can help said newbies learn about the differences, but them again, so can the guys working the floor at CompUSA, BestBuys, CircuitCity's Computer Department, etc. I Agree with the guy who said that users should take basic computer classes, and agree that porgrammers should take classes to know what the effing hardware they are interfacing with does.
well at this point, i think i have come full circle from trying to argue that this wasnt a troll, to agreeing with you that he didnt make much sense. i should probably hit back instead of submit, oh well, here goes

Would it be illegal, for instance, for altavista to put a page in their engine, after pepsi has submitted it?
I get nervous when judges come near the internet. Our fears, however, can be a little alleviated in that, supposing that people actually want the internet around, they can't outright stop us from linking to each other, the only issue might be a few trivial lawsuits which would overturn such a foolish decision.
Agreed, emphatically agreed
The only true source of action in situations like this IMHO is for there to be a body which is not related to any government anywhere. Yes, the majority of "the internet" is located in the USA, but what about the portions in ASIA, Australia, and Europe which host websites. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I have seen tooo many Asian sites that have so much warez. And it is these sites which agencies like RIAA get so worked up about.
Hackers (not crackers) are the one's who have brought the internet into the foreground. Hacker's are the one's who have developed these technologies. Script Kiddies are the Warez Demons that RIAA wants to abolish. Can we >Hackers, Crackers, /.'rs< not do something about this? Are we totally without control?
sometimes these are the things that make you say wait, doesnt that person realize what the internet IS?!?
i think we can handle this IF WE ALL GET MATURE.

I know this thread is Deeply OffTopic, but:
wtf r YHBT, YHL, & Hand?
Personally, i don't believe Open Source can exist so much with current corporations, but with some work and some, "pardon me, can we do peaceful business sometime," truly powerful things can come out of opensource development.
all i know is that i agree
