This is just a wild theory, not based on fact at all, but it's just as likely that the recent Microsoft break-in was just a sham, and Microsoft may be blackmailing them, trying to blackmail Corel to stop work on WINE and get out of the OS business. They were already on Microsoft's shitlist over WordPerfect; porting the Windows versions of PerfectOffice and CorelDraw using a free implementation of the Windows API must have the spooks in Redmond hopping mad.
Again, though, I stress that this is merely an opinion; totally unsubstantiated, no factual evidence that this could be happening. This could merely be a last-ditch effort on Corel's part to actually bail out the company. I don't know. But events are unfolding in a rather, shall we say, suspicious manner. =)
Calling it GNU/FreeBSD would also imply that FreeBSD was somehow a derived work...which, according to the GPL (the same section used against KDE) it is not. Compiling something with GCC cannot and will not make it a derived work. Nothing to worry about. =)
Back in July I was working WAAAAY too much and getting settled into a new house and seem to have missed this story. If there weren't 100 posts with links to the old story, I might never have known this was an old story!
I bet you call news networks every day: "You fucks, you ran a story about Florida election results LAST NIGHT! HOW IS THIS NEWS!!!" I bet Elian Gonzales really drove ya nuts; I mean, it was the same story for WEEKS. If the same story twice a year drives you nuts, I mean, that must REALLY drive you nutz. It drove me nutz hearing everyday about the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia; I mean, just run one story and be done with it. I considered calling CBS News last night because they gave Putin's political title last night. I mean, when he took office, they listed his title; why run it again! And I almost called my PBS affiliate because they ran a documentary on POWs returned to the United States in the 70's! (I can't say which war because it has been covered many places before.) I mean, I could probably dig up all sorts of old news clippings about these POWs all the way back to the 70's, c'mon!
C'mon, if you have nothing better to do, folks...go get a life or something.
Read through the list of their software. See Linux? No? Check the list of other software covered by the GPL. Linux is there. Linux is not GNU, dammit! >:( If I compile and use GNU utils on Cygwin, does that give me GNU/Windows? Of course not. GNU/Solaris anyone? Linux could not be the phenomenon it is today without GNU...but Linux is not GNU.
I suppose calling it a "league" instead of a "foundation" makes it better...considering the flak the KDE people sent GNOME's way when the GNOME Foundation started, I hope they're eating lots of crow right now. Reading the press release, I see little to differentiate between the GNOME Foundation and the KDE League except, of course, that KDE League members are apparently supposed to abstain from KDE development.
Heh, they didn't post my question, but I got it answered anyway...dude's working for Mandrakesoft hahaha...maybe they can throw in a "Would you like to supersize that?" I hope that Mandrake will get better settings than low, medium and high.
/*
I can not use it in my organization, adn thus use it for work without at least as much hassle as using Windows.
*/
I'm one of those people who would like to see Linux accepted as a desktop OS by the software (read: proprietary) industry, and a typical response, other than the generic "there's no interest" is that companies just don't want to deal with the backlash of doing a binary-only release for Linux. I have lousy coding skills so writing an Illustrator clone isn't an option, but using Windows or MacOS just isn't acceptable anymore. =) Yeah, I know about Corel Draw, and I have the free Photo-Paint download, so I may soon buy Corel Draw. And no, Sketch isn't even close. We won't even talk about The GIMP. =)
Actually...well, no you're right, nuking rm would be a problem. if you did something like
rm -f `find / -depth -type -f -perm +111 \
-exec grep -isa gnu '{}' ';'`
(NOTE: this is untested =)
that might work. =)
I was actually referring to GNU idealism; the notion that all software must be 100% free. Now, if Linus had concentrated on building BSD utils for his kernel instead of the GNU utils, the GNU Project wouldn't feel like they could dictate terms to the Linux world (which, really, they can't.)
I wouldn't doubt it if, in a year or so, you'll see at least one Linux distro devoid of most GNU software.
Come to think of it, I've been meaning to give FreeBSD a try. =P
With Microsoft Windows being marketing-driven, and MacOS being in the air, myself and others desire a change. Linux and GNU help bring hope to those of us who just want Something Better(TM). However, I'm not a developer; I'm soon going to be doing production in the world of dead-tree press. I'd like some nice production tools for Linux. Am I really violating my own rights if I buy Corel Draw for Linux? There are those who would rather I not use these tools on Linux; I've talked with people who actually hope that GNU tools and libraries will be licensed in such a way that allows only Free Software to be linked against them. Personally, I'd like to be FREE to run QuarkXPress on a Linux box. I'd like to be FREE to run Photoshop and Illustrator on Linux. The Free tools just aren't there, and are encumbered by patents. I know; GNU's goals are long-term goals, but frankly I need the tools right NOW. MacOS isn't an option (I can't buy new hardware now) and Windows is a joke. For me, this leaves Linux since it's both supremely stable and user-driven.
Recently (and I don't remember who said it) someone quipped to me that GNU/Linux should be read "GNU divides Linux." Frankly, I feel that's what has happened. I don't wish to whitewash Project out of Linux history; I merely wish that, in their desire for all software to be Free, that they wouldn't attempt to encumber MY right to use proprietary software if it suits me (which it does.)
What I meant to say instead of giving my knee-jerk response =) was that you seem to be assuming Linux==GNU (or at least your last sentence seems to imply that.) This is not the case.
Linux is a kernel, and systems are built around this kernel. These systems typically have a full suite of GNU software around them. Because RMS felt that he and the rest of the GNU project weren't getting due credit, he proposed the name "GNU/Linux" as the "more proper" way of referring to a Linux distribution. Unfortunately (perhaps this is what was intended) some people take this to mean that Linux==GNU. Linux is not part of the GNU project, and while I don't know why not, I would say it is due to sentiments expressed in your comment. The larger Linux community simply wants a more reliable, stable, secure OS than what commercial vendors offer. The larger community doesn't mind the occasional proprietary program (I'd like to see Photoshop and QuarkXPress ported...and if you reply mentioning The GIMP you get no points from me) and welcome any addition to the Linux fold provided it violates no licensing agreements.
If you don't want to see companies like NVIDIA doing this sort of thing, tell them in a way they'll understand: vote with your money (buy from Free Software-friendly vendors.) But do NOT imply that Linux is somehow GNU. HURD is GNU. Linux is not. The larger community will kindly thank you to not coerce the masses into believing that Linux is GNU by using deceptive naming practices.
Good thing I don't use a GNU/Linux system, huh. =)
XFree != GNU
I use Linux--the Linux world is much more accepting of alternative solutions (i.e. non-GNU.) Having said that, I don't buy hardware that isn't documented if I don't have to. =)
Look no further. And no, it's not goat sex. It's Tribes 2 beta testing. Yeah, some guy's Atari 2600 hybrid is TONS more interesting, and so's all the other crap posted today, but here's a story that got bitchslapped down.

Hrm, it's a menu option and works fine for me.
Oh, come on; Microsoft is hardly a democracy, yet they have features in, say, Excel that only five or so people ever use.
Amen. You ought to email Taco on this one.
How about removing HTML priveledges(sp) for people below a certain karma level?

So it's impossible to even begin to replace gcc with another compiler. More lies.
English is a bastardization of Welsh, German, and Latin.
You're pathetic. I only posted it once. Bitch at Taco or something.

I did, and the funny thing is, you seemed to have missed it there and found it here. ;)

If it was sitting on a Visor, you'd get thrown into the Quickies for sure.
There's all kinds of other crap going on here that's offtopic-and I get modded down. Thanks, trollboy who had their 5 points of fame. I'll just post the link again, and again, and again until I have a score of 1 so that people will see that Loki is looking for Tribes 2 beta testers. You'll see this story posted by CmdrTaco in about a month, mark my words. And it'll be new news to him.

submitted twice, rejected within a minute both times. Big news.
I'd also like to point out that it's possible to write GNOME apps using Ruby.
There, idiot moderator, mod this down.
