Personally, I'm not much of a programmer (I gave it up before I was ever done getting a Bacchelor's and went for journalism) and didn't learn much about language design, but I agree; Perl solves problems but it's atrocious. I've learned very little Python but what I have I really like. =) Perl's one of those things that just does a lot of really neat stuff but is uglier than a configure file.

But you're the GNOME troll, right?

Think about it. Troll Tech is a commercial venture. QT is either GPL or QPL (your pick) if you write open software. If you use the QPL version you should be able to use more licenses.

If Troll Tech released QT under the LGPL then they'd just have to go out of business. I can see why that sounds great to an ungrateful student, but to someone who's actually worked for a living, QT sounds like a sweet deal (unless you actually have to pay for it ;-)

What's your preference of software license? If you say "LGPL" I'll club you over the head because, despite the fact that the "L" stands for Lesser rather than Library, it's still so restricted that you can only release libraries under it (yeah, I read the license.)

  17. Speaking from the Dark Side of Journalism on Future Of Journalism · · Score: 1

as someone on the advertising side of journalism, I can say that there's something of a love-hate relationship between advertising people and journalists.

The truth is that all journalism needs funding of some sort (in a capitalist society, at least...) and that that source of money generally wants to have some sort of influence on editorial content. Fail to do so, and the source of funds dry up. This is true in the USA even including PBS (in my area, my local PBS station would lose its funding if it didn't show excessive amounts of Lawrence Welk.) Journalists hate that. To allow advertising dollars or other funds to affect their decisions in story writing is unthinkable (at least to some.) In the end, some sort of compromise must be made.

Choose what you will--starve for good journalism, or grow fat and complacent on mediocre drivel. Me, I choose the world of drivel (just kidding.)
