  1. multi-bit bits? on Computing With Molecules · · Score: 1

I've always wondered this... why don't we use 2, 4, etc. bit bits? as I've learned more about processing, I've been able to reason it out, but it still doesn't make sense why we don't do it for storage. say, have a magnetic disk that writes/reads like 16 levels of magnetic strength per bit, so each bit is 16 times more compact than normal... true, this would require conversion to binary, so it'd be a little slower (probably less than a picosecond per bit, but things add up...), but it'd be denser... as we get down to smaller and smaller media, this would become more difficult...
from my (extremely limited) knowledge of how these things work, it seems that it would be possible for these molecular processors to process a 2 bit bit, depending on a voltage level, would raise the electrons to different quantum level... anyone know? this sound reasonable? am i completely out of my gourd? (not a first by any means)

1 -- i've clicked a bunch of "legally binding" agreements and broken them. if the GPL is revoked, they'll no longer be legally binding (that's my first argument in court)
2 -- it'll make more people physically sign their software over to the FSF

maybe i should do that at my site, if anyone ever complains about speed... tell them that i'm working on it, and a month later, take the site down for a day, and say that i've upgraded the hardware... they'll think its faster (maybe i'll take my d.net client down for a day... tho its pretty good at staying out of the way...), so they'll be happy, and my pocketbook'll be happy... well, no, that's not true... my pocketbook is NEVER happy... happier, i guess... i actually don't think that /. gets hit as much as people say... i don't think any of you exist, actually... well, maybe one or two... no trolls ever go to slashdot... there's just a script that writes troll posts... and another one that moderates the other script's postings down... how else would trolls get first posts? maybe i'm a script... i'm confused...

  6. kids+violent games!=violent kids on Dreadling Released · · Score: 1

Mindless violence for kids to become obsessed with? At age 10, I was violent, I planned to kill people, and what games did I have? Frogger, and the like. at age 14 these plans became more realistic. i knew how to make bombs, even made a few, and had plenty of places where i could get guns for free/cheap (read: Local gangs). At that point, i was playing descent and terminal velocity. doom didn't interest me... it was too... 2d... the other 2 were true 3d, and a lot more fun. I didn't end up killing anybody all through middle school or high school... got in plenty of fights and mutilated a guy's face with a pair of scisors, but since i was a little scared white kid that wouldn't hurt anybody unless i was backed into a corner, i got off free... truth be told, i flat-out attacked the guy... Games don't effect us. Some are born... different. I've always had a morbid sense of humor, at parties, my friends and I fight... sometimes nicely, but we get hurt sometimes, too... I'm not an angry person anymore. I've gotten mad probably 3 times in the past 4 years... counseling? no. i hate shrinks... I've just changed myself. Forced myself into a different outlook on life. I still want to fight every asshole i walk past on the sidewalk, but i don't.
I live off of adrenaline. Be it fighting, nearly getting into car accidents (not intentionally... i'm not STUPID...), stealing (don't do that nearly as much anymore...), rappeling, etc., nothing gives me a better feeling than adrenaline. maybe sex, but that's a completely different feeling...
my point is, kids are not altered by the video games they play. we are born how we are, and in this rapidly expanding, overpopulated culture, we as a species feel a need to "clean it out" a little bit... so we raise killers. i am a killer. i have never killed, and i don't plan to kill. but i have the urge. i want to. any time i get angry, i'm not sure i'd stop at killing somebody. that's why i don't get angry anymore. i don't want to kill, so i control myself.
nowadays, i play violent games, and so do many of my friends. oddly enough, the best player i know is an ultra-do-good-pacifist. he's everybody's friend, and everybody loves him. once, a guy decked him, and broke his glasses and his cheekbone. he found out who it was, and we were all ready to go fuck the guy up, but he wouldn't let us... he forgave the fucker; didn't even turn him into the cops... go figure.
also, who's kids have palm pilots, anyway?

I'll have to work on that analogy... anyway... I'm actually in the process of teaching my graphic designer a little PHP so she can code a little bit when i throw stuff at her. A lot of the time, when i need something to look pretty, I tell her to make the html up, I rip it apart, and plug the neccessary bits into my code.
Our site has a dynamic format (our subscribers customize the page, and their users see it as their site), so this is pretty important. She now knows enough to put color tags where she's supposed to... i.e. <?echo $bgcolor?>
as to everything else you said, like free, well documented, etc... I couldn't agree more... also, its the easiest language I have ever learned... even easier than esparanto is supposed to be... Back in my mudding days (ok, 2 years ago), a few friends of mine and i were gods, or had higher level characters, or both. A few people saw us playing, got interested, and joined us. Some we invited, some we didn't. One idiot decided it'd be cool to join, and watched a friend of mine sign on, thus figured out how to get in. We let him, after all, it was an open mud and all...
btw, if you don't know what a mud is, go to circlemud.org.
back to the story... well, he was a nuisance... he died a lot, so we rescued him/his stuff... then he started to cheat, and we repremanded him a few times. After about 2 months of putting up with his cheating (we were fucking LENIENT), he watches my password (not hard, it was "enter"). Mind you, i'm a god. i can go anywhere, kill anything, make anything... if he knew how to wield a god, he'da been able to do a LOT more than he did... anyway, he went around to all the hardest monsters, killed them, and put on the equipment. then i tried to log on, and couldn't, because he was already on. so i got on with a mortal, to see what was up. he sees me, and changes my god's password. lucky me, i know how to snoop passwords too. so i use his password, and change it back to an old favorite of mine that nobody knows... (22 characters and bitchy)
i email the implementors (the people that own the server, thus the game, and make all decisions), and tell them what happened. they post on the god's bulletin board that the guy is a "god target". see him, hill him, sack his shit.
So i do this. every time you die, you lose experience. i killed him until he had zero experience... he was 2 levels from the top... that's about 3 months of good, solid play.
he begs and pleads, and begs, and pleads to get his stuff back... he acts like he worked really hard for it... of course i don't give it to him.
two days later, he comes into one of my classes, and says "lets go out onto Alder" (alder street is where lotsa people hang out). i look down, and he's got a gun in his pocket pointing at me. This is not an overactive imagination seeing a finger as a gun... that was a gun. i grew up in the ghetto, i know a gun when i see one. being the cocky bastard i am, i call his bluff, turn around, and walk to my seat and sit down... fortunately, i gambled right.

you think people spending money on these games is taking it too far? nay, i hardly think so... if you are wondering, yes, this IS a true story... if this sounds like a story that'd hit the news, it wouldn't, because the only people that i told for 6 months were a friend of mine in the class (about an hour later), and my girlfriend (2 weeks later)... i'm a paranoid bastard, but i'm alive.
