  1. Some Basic Todos on Ask Slashdot: Designing a Telecom Configuration Center? · · Score: 1

    Small Budget.....eh...

    Things to ponder on:
    1) Primary and Secondary UPS/Generator to ensure good clean supply at all times. Depending on your power source and and stability, you may or may not need this. If you have a budget, go for it.
    2) Primary and Secondary Temperature/Humidity Control to ensure a stable environment. Can get pretty hot in a Telecom room when AC is not working. Depending on your geo-location, you may or may not need this.
    3) Raised Floor/Ceiling space to run cables. If budget allows, Cable Trays to run cables from one side of the room to another....could be done neatly and on a budget.
    5) Position of Racks to ensure Accessibility....especially cable racks. You never know when you need to punchdown new cables and getting behind the little space behind a rack can be a pain. Make sure you can easily work around your server/cable racks.
    6) Proper electrical grounding for all equipment. Ground the racks properly...equipment can thus be grounded via racks.
    7) Physical separation of Electrical cabling and Data cabling as much as possible.
    8) Labeling
    9) Physical Security to the room and building room is in. - Fire/Water Alarms. Temperature sensor if budget allows. Break-in protection...etc.
    10) Position of Telephone - During remote support this can be a pain unless you have a cordless phone.
    11) Consider how many people will be in room at same time.

Best way to start is plan a layout using some software. Position everything. AC/ UPS/ RACKS/ TELEPHONE/ PEOPLE IN ROOM.

    Just some basic considerations....among others...

    All the best!

“Our standing recommendation is that companies should fix critical vulnerabilities within 60 days — or, if a fix is not possible, they should notify the public about the risk and offer workarounds,” the two said in a blog post today. “We encourage researchers to publish their findings if reported issues will take longer to patch. Based on our experience, however, we believe that more urgent action — within seven days — is appropriate for critical vulnerabilities under active exploitation. The reason for this special designation is that each day an actively exploited vulnerability remains undisclosed to the public and unpatched, more computers will be compromised.”

Sounds like a good idea, effectively making IE, a tool used by the OS that has browsing functionality.

Effectively what he is saying is that the other browsers, can serve as browsers while IE is now reduced to a tool!

4G is standardized and will make things better but differences in Frequency usage across the planet will still cause some roaming issues.
Multi band phones will help but still...

There are still kinks to sort out with 4G..Antenna Tech among others...to get the bandwidth required to meet 4G specs.
Plus, there are no real 4G handsets out as yet either...the LTE handsets are just LTE handsets..not 4G.

Presently, many markets are using LTE just for data.
4G should and will also allow Voice over LTE...then that will be true 4G.

Till then, we stuck on 3.9G !

Agreed, AC has a valid purpose in many cases and yes to the AC who posted earlier about ACs making more useful contributions than I have, both good and BAD. I could say the same for you too. I'm not here to argue and rant off like some others. Its not a pissing contest like some would want it to be.

The intention was not so much to absolutely censor AC, but more to prevent the silly and nonsensical AC posts like First Post silliness.
The ACs are the ones who mostly post the nonsensical/offensive comments. People signed in, generally don't do so. Admittedly, registered users do post nonsense as well, but I'd venture to say less than ACs. I may be wrong.

Anonymity obviously has its benefits, like in the good example you made but it also allows people to use that to do things they normally would not do if they were recognized. I was just trying to suggest a way to reduce nonsense, although I admit that at times nonsense can be fun.

Adding Humor, Satire and intelligent wit is fine....real/proper/fun/witty Trolls.
Nonsensical "Yeah....I got first post" everytime..gets a little silly.

Of course censorship is not generally good...and yes.....I may have not thought of all the reasons AC serves when I made the post. This is /. People are waiting to pounce. ;) Thats fine. Just had good intentions. Wanted /. to be better. Good intentions are not always good enough.

There are pros and cons with everything.
There are Pros like the one you mentioned. ACs do post useful info. I'll give you that.
I guess I will just have to live with the cons of having to deal with silliness, meaningless rants.
Come to think of it...we need to laugh sometimes. ..so yeah...I may have been wrong...in the big scheme of things.
So yeah. Lets the ACs run wild. Let them say what we want. We can mod them the hell down if its crappy content.

    Cue next rant/response/pounce/for/against/whatever.

Let the first 5 or so posts be from registered users only. AC cannot reply to the OP until 5 or so replies to OP by registered users have been made.

5 can be tweaked...to an optimized value 3-5 i'd say.

Maybe this will stop the silly 1st post...from AC.....then again..maybe now we will egt

From Op POV - Speed, Bandwidth, Better Network Architecture, Simpler Network Management, Increase in opportunity to make new apps, new revenue streams, etc.

The "Real" 4G standard requires 1 gbps for stationary mobile devices, as in when you are not moving.
It requires 100 mbps for moving mobile devices, as in when you are on the move, even at speeds of over 350 kmph. (maybe mph, can't quite remember)
    3G cannot deliver that.

Email is still highly useful - the problem these people have is no discipline in how to handle email - first, turn off all notifications. Second, only check a couple of times a day. Email is not instant, so don't treat it like it is. Do the same for IM. This removes the disruption of your daily tasks. If it's really important, someone will call....

Ha....your right.....unfortunately people want email to be instant.......

In most mid sized companies 25-100......email is used a lot for collaborating with each other....sending files....sending requests.....updates...etc.
They send you an email.....call you 5 mins later...did you receive my email? Its urgent.......can you please do it now?
Of course, if its someone important in the company....you can't say...oh its not time to check my email yet...so I will get to it......plus it might actually be urgent.....

So yes..people now expect email to be instant.....like a task listing....new tasks come in......you check.....except...you can do a lot of other non-useful things with email.

Yes.....all the above this is because of poor planning probably....no scheduling....task management....proper systems...policies...etc.....but the problem can be solved by good Business Flow/Task Flow systems. But cost is prohibitively high for smaller companies to have good business flow control systems that can replace email.

Also....many times...such systems are very complex and harder to use as well......so the benefit of not using email might be lost.....

    Email can be replaced if
    1) The whole business has an excellent business process flow control system that encompasses all processes where by all task are entered, tracked and traced.
    2) Such system is scalable
    3) Such system is easy to use

If we have the above...email use can be limited...and possibly eliminated......with use of other technologies....
Client communications would then just be a task in the process chain.....

Now....who can make such systems for businesses.....easy..simple...cheap...bug free.....no downtime.....

    Utopia.

I think money for buildings should be spent on creating more content.

KA's biggest strength is that it is online, ie, easily accessible, content easily creatable, no barriers to entry accept internet. Videos should be downloadable....and this will solve that issue.

I don't mind his teaching methods but some of his language may be too advanced for for younger kids....so money should be spent on creating more suitable content for a wider range of topics. Not just for the reason I mentioned but there is only so much he can do....and he has surely done a lot......

Open it up for anyone to be able to create...pay people not to create but to moderate other creations....this way...you allow anyone to use the skills to create and moderators can make sure it is appropriate and passes QA.

Schools should use KA and integrate it into their curriculum instead of KA starting their own school
Summers camps can he held anywhere using KA.

I agree with the other expenses, ie CMS, etc since making content creation and management easy is a big deal and will allow for other content creators to upload and mange content properly. I would go with integrating an elearning system with it for all the courses. They already have something for some but not all courses.
Teachers form anywhere should be able to integrate with the elearning system and keep track of students activities, thsi way you are empowering many teachers as opposed to only KA teachers/students.
