It would be more efficient from a power/weight stand, but, It would be more harmful for the environment overall. The electricity would be generated on the surface of the earth somewhere and it would be most likely from coal. So this plan would be alot more harmful to the environment than Oxygen and Hydrogen.
Checked out where this facility is located and it turns out they are located in Warrenton, VA. This is what used to be the tip of suburban sprawl in the Washington, DC metro area (50 miles from the heart of DC).
Seems if they were truly interested in protecting the environment they would not have located their facility out in the fringes of the city. There are a large number of managed/co-lo facilities located much closer to the population that is maintaining them.
I would venture to say that if this facility is as large as the other facilities in the area that it is using just as much fossil fuel if not more than the others. This is because all of the employees have to get in their cars and drive from their homes in the city and suburbs out to the facility. They burn a lot more hydrocarbons and a lot more inefficiently than a power plant.
Definately another case of trying to make a profit off of environmental fads....
Sure there are bad things that are used in the process of making computer equipment. How does that fit into the bigger scheme of things? We all know that the airline industry is a huge polluter... so if the information age allows more people to video conference and distribute data without having to use cars and airplanes to get from point to point. Then maybe we are coming out ahead. I can't prove that, but, I would assume that would be the case. It seems that we would have to pour a lot of toxins out of these plants to make up for what the Jets spew out everyday.... When it comes to environmental problems, people should go out and pick up trash in their own neighborhood before they go out and tell everybody else what to do and not to do!:-)
