    Another take on this..
Can't remember the name of it or even the author, but it's an interesting concept. Basically there have been these "alien" signals picked up for the last 20 years, repeating same time every day, with a different "image" on each one. They finally stop, one person puts the puzzle together and they build this machine that allows them to view the world in the 4th dimension. The authors take on the 4th dimension was kind of an "overmind" which could be used to view all peoples thoughts/memories etc. The aliens that have been broadcasting this message have also been travelling towards earth the entire time and they finally get here, the 2 overminds from the different planets finally touch and everybody on the world experiences true empathy.

Very interesting read.. I wish I could remember the authors name

Of course, there's always the possibility that the record labels are flooding Napster/wherever you get your mp3's with these half-assed recordings to tease you and get you to buy the cd

IMHO this happens more than the RIAA will admit. They put mp3's out there (how did the Metallica CD get out there BEFORE it was released?), they KNOW that napster is an incredible source for marketing, they use it alot. The problem is, they want to control everything to do with music, they want the control of the distribution.

So it's OK for Miguel to use that title, and then explain what he means by it, but it's not ok for /. to use the same title and then explain what they mean by it? wtf??

For the lazy - here is the full article that /. posted. Or, the link
alessio writes: "On the front page of Linux Weekly News there is a report from the Ottawa Linux Symposium where the adorable Miguel de Icaza supposedly states that Unix has been built wrong from the ground up." It's actually a pretty cool interview, and as always, Miguel makes his point without any candy coating! The major point is the lack of reusable code between major applications (a major problem that both KDE and GNOME have been striving to fix for some time now).

So, has been built wrong from the ground up, lack of reusable code etc (all stuff the Miguel said) is an inflamatory or innapropriate article?

Slashdot is no worse or better than traditional media for the title of the article. It is designed to be catchy, so that you read further.

It won't happen to me, guess what.. I don't have a domainname, nor do I want one, unless of course I'm going to start my own business up of course. Now, even though the dotcom name has been twisted to mean the internet, it's still supposed to be for commercial sites. Shouldn't the bible page have been a .org to begin with?

Note, I'm pissed that they ruled in this fashion, but really .com is for commerce, .org for non-profit, which site fits where?

My concern is someone eavesdropping on my private conversations, a person getting my Visa number (and possibly using it). A corporation putting arbitrary charges on my credit cards etc. Real people (vs corporate entities) are more likely going to abuse any information they gather about me (like ussearch). This is what worries me.

This is wierd if you ask me, don't the judges realize that search engines are doing more or less the same thing?

OTOH, there was a post above that mentioned the robots.txt file - and I must say I agree with that, anything searching a site should be obeying that file. This is akin to a store keeping it's records locked up, or knowing about an upcoming sale and not broadcasting it the week before.
