Actually Slack artificially inflated their last version by a couple because they were sick of being asked if they were compatible with "Linux 6". It's a pretty funny article, if you poke around on the slackware site I'm sure you'll find it.
His armor was, not sure of his race though. I remember reading of his origin in "Tales of the Bounty Hunters" but I really don't remember (it's been a while and I don't have the book at work)
Problem is that they listened to Metallica, they have set a precedent to get everybody banned from their servers.

Ahh.. but WMS/Williams made that, along with Medival Madness/Monster Mash that were AFAIK based on basically the same board.. And Williams/WMS is dead as far as their pinball division..
I have yet to see a WARNING THIS CAN CAUSE EPELEPTIC SEISURES on a Q3 box.
You have not lived until you've played a pinball game, keeping the 3rd ball up for ~15 minutes, getting ever closer to the highest damn score you've ever seen on the machine, or a shot or 2 away from beating the objective of the game..
I like q3, but pinball is a LOT more fun.

There is a volume control:-)
In fact most of the older games that I have seen are louder than most of the newer games. In my case it could be the volume is cranked down on purpose because there is a lot more noise happening
Up here in Calgary, the one arcade that I know of that has more than 2 pinball machines also has a whole whack of old coin-ops. They are an outlet for Southern Music (who rents games to other arcades) and hence end up with a lot of old stuff.
If you are ever in Calgary it is called Southern Fun and located downtown.
WMS had bought Bally, so they aren't doing them anymore.

Ugh! SEGA tables IMHO suck real hard. The controls are weak and wierd, too many ramps, too few goals. I don't know of any SEGA table that I have ever enjoyed enough to keep pumping quarters in. I guess if all others are gone and SEGA still makes a new table every now and then I might change my opinion. But more than likely I will still play Medival Madness/Attack From Mars/Monster Madness/Junkyard/Star Trek TNG..
I've been thinking about this for a while.. I think it would be great to adapt something (keyboard?) a pinball base, have bearings etc that it rides on to detect the bump, regular flippers etc along the side..
I dunno, might suck, but someday maybe I'll give it a try..
This was the first I had heard that Williams had gone out. This makes me real depressed, I loved Attack from Mars, Medieval Madness & Monster Bash, I was thinking I'd probably rent one of the three from the arcade I play at for the next LAN party:-)
I've never heard of the company mentioned in the article - at least I don't recognize the name. At the arcade I play at, there are WMS/Ballys/Midway (all good games) and SEGA (yech..). What games has Stern made? Can someone fill me in?
The one thing that the article states well is how quickly the machines erode. Maybe it's just the guys that repair them, but on the ones I play something new is broken every couple of weeks. Along with the reoccuring troubles...
I was able to get it going, couldn't get the installer running.. so copied from a windows install of it.. I have to add -dll crtdll=n -winver nt40 to get it going though.. oh and of course have to have the native crtdll.dll:-)
But, same as always, no battlenet.. get as far as character selection and that's about it..:-(
Put a blanket over the monitor and over your head, like a tent.. this is a really silly looking solution (especially in an office situation), but seems to work for a buddy of mine..
A very interesting read.. I liked the comments on geeknews (which is where the story was posted) even better. 300x the speed of light=5.5 warp speed:-)
I agree about gaming being idiot-proof. Game installations should be quick and painless because the users who play the most games generally don't know the most about their systems. Setting up Quake 3 should not be on the same level as editing a text config file.
Huh? The thing that first convinced me to open up my 286 was when I couldn't use my mouse and my BBS dialing software at the same time. The only reason I called BBS's was to play L.O.R.D. or any of the other games on them. Getting Doom II to dial up my buddy so we could play some deathmatch is one of my favorite memories, was such a hassle trying to get that freakin thing to work! But man was it satisfying getting it going. Point is, if not for gaming, I wouldn't know everything I do now. And think about it, how many gamers DON'T know exactly what mobo/vidcard/soundcard/meg of ram/chipset they have on their PC?
But for a windows using person that wants to play an old Dos game.... more often than not they have to create a boot floppy that strips out all the windows drivers etc that load at boot time and then start the game. You would be amazed at the extent some people go through to get an old game working right..
That's true, but how often have you had to install a new driver for windows in order to get the best resolution/speed etc.. people often forget that there are problems getting games going on Windows too in a lot of cases. I still can't play Quake III on my work machine - have GL drivers, should work, doesn't - I can't figure out why. I tried to install Chessmaster at work, again, does not work. Took me a bit of work to get X4.0 going with support for my Matrox on my home machine, but at least I can play Quake III on it. Of course, when you are looking at simple (non-3d) games - it's pretty darned easy to get it going on Windows, but it was pretty damned easy to install RR2 as well:-)
Windows 2000 machine at work, someone had said that this was a good gaming platform. My experience says definately not.
Have you tried Utah or DRI? Both of these projects appear to be moving right along. I have great 3d support through X 4.0 with a Matrox G400 Max. These both provide direct rendering while running X.
Ah.. but WINE will do Starcraft - least IPX support IIRC, warcraft also works, diablo to an extent, and I can testify that Diablo II will probably work using wine, for me the stress-test beta works - no sound, and no battlenet (so kinda pointless) but it does load up. Looks like the biggest problem with all blizzard games using WINE is getting them to connect to battlenet. IPX network play (ala LAN Party) should work.

Yah..
That'd be funny if this case had ANYTHING to do with the RIAA vs NAPSTER

Not to mention the kick to the leg of the table when it pisses you off. I don't think the screen version could possibly enable that reaction in me.
Ahh.. TNG..
We've still got one at the arcade I frequent.
6 ball multiball, now that is a blast.
Agreed! :-)
What's the highest you've hit on Junk?
~140mil for me.. that was a good day
Pinball is slower paced

Doh.. should say - i have never seen a blizzard game UNDER WINE hit battlenet
I made the stress test open under WINE, but I have never seen a blizzard game hit battlenet.. so single player will probably work, but no multiplay..
