When I was 17 I was writing backend tools to empower Tier 1 tech support to do some of the things that the Tier 2 and 3 guys normally had to take care of. And I actually had a boss who, still to this day, asks people if they know how to use VI in an interview (and does not want to hire them if they do not know it). The VI thing always irritated me though. Anyone can learn VI. I want a good programmer who knows his stuff. If he doesn't know the tools, a good programmer will learn to use them in no time.

When I got there, they handed me the suction tool and I sat there with the tool in my wide open mouth for the next 3 hours. I was thirsty as hell by then but could not drink on account of being unable to swallow.
Now, obviously those accident victims were in much more dire need of medical attention than I was, but it still took forever. I went into the hospital around 10pm and left around 6am. I would have probably gotten out earlier but I passed out when they gave me strong pain medicine to help me relax before the doctor reset my jaw.
Of course, one benefit of POTS was that, in a power failure, your landline phone would frequently still work because of the giant piles of batteries at the CO. So, you could still dial 911 if, say, your aged relative's breathing assist machine needed power, or if there was some other medical emergency in the midst of what ever caused the power failure. Kind of ironic that, as a result of a disaster, they'll be somewhat more vulnerable to disasters.
This would probably be more reliable than POTS. Every household would have a backup battery. Even the POTS interfaces from the cable company come with a battery installed. Remember when cell phones were just phones and the battery lasted for days? Now imagine a bigger battery.
Also in a disaster they could easily setup mobile towers to replace towers that have been damaged or to add additional capacity. You can't just run new POTS lines in an emergency. The old system could have been down for weeks if your lines went down. Now maybe only hours or days if it even goes down. There is a lot more redundancy now too since you are not relying on a single copper connection to your house. In theory you would have the ability to connect to multiple towers, so it one fails the other will be a backup.
So it is not at all more vulnerable to disasters.

You might have thousands of messages, emails, your bank statements, and other personal and confidential information you do not make a habit of carrying with you. If the police need access to that information, and have probable cause, then they should have to get a warrant to do so. Just as they would need a warrant to review my call logs, my bank statement, or to search through my house.

But then I worked for a company that allowed salaried employees 4 weeks of paid medical leave per year and did not provide any for hourly employees and that probably wasn't very fair either.
Actually in California fathers are granted the 12 weeks required under the FMLA at the federal level. So while it may be legal to give mom's 16 weeks (though I am not sure it is), dads are required by law to get at least 12 weeks.

You can't trickle charge them, so as you use the device plugged in, the battery discharges to some threshold, where the battery controller starts charging it again. So even if you leave it plugged in 24x7, if the battery is plugged in, it will discharge and then recharge at some frequency.
I use a very old digital watch when I go hiking on the mountains (my phone is usually in airplane more or switched off). I put the watch in a closed pocket or strap it on the backpack (it's has a velcro strap) because I can't tolerate anything around a wrist anymore: I just lost the habit some 20 years ago. There are almost no other use cases for a watch for me, certainly not for a smart one that I won't wear.
That said, I'm sure smart watches will sell and maybe I'll make some money writing software for them if some customer pays me to do it.

Remember Apple is very secretive so that may not announced to the world all their plans. Also, Apple has been known to front money to their suppliers in exchange for guaranteed supplies. Today they are sitting on billions in cash.
I doubt such a deal could remain secret due to SEC filings from Apple. Not to mention the fact that the suppliers will want to say "Look at us! We just got a billion dollars!" so that they may boost their stock prices. If we haven't heard about Apple making such a deal, then it probably hasn't happened. And it may not happen easily. Everyone is using flash storage now, and there is likely to be a lot of concern over supply. The big players may not want to make a deal with Apple to guarantee a supply so that they do not artificially limit the supply for their own products. Of course with a few extra billion, you could possibly increase your production significantly.
400,000 miles? That's nothing. As a retired commercial driver, I averaged 120,000 miles a year and that's just a single truck. With all the commercial rigs (18 wheelers) on the road with a combined avg miles in excess of 1billion a year, with less then 1 accident per 250,000 miles avg (google for current stats), that simply doesn't impress me.

He was doing this literally right after WWII. At the time, my dad was living in the same area and the whole town of Las Vegas would turn out to watch the bomb drops. I don't think anyone understood the long term health implications of the nuclear testing that was going on at the time. My uncle has had a long and happy life. He's a fighter and still is able to do most of the things he loves. I've never heard him complain about what happened to him as a result of the bomb testing he did. He is in his 80's now.

What if you, say, forget a gear, or mismatch the pressure release valve?

The law does not forbid offering internet service, even at a cost. The law forbids operating internet based gambling for a price. Basically these places were literally giant casinos that labeled themselves as internet cafes. The law specifically forbids the types of games that were being played at these facilities, and does not, in any way, affect internet access for anyone.
Well the story assumes that Apple hasn't already secured their supply. This story from 2005 reports how Apple made 5-year deals with 5 different manufacturers to secure their supply. The deals have since run out but it doesn't take a grand strategist to guess that Apple may have negotiated new deals. Remember Apple is very secretive so that may not announced to the world all their plans. Also, Apple has been known to front money to their suppliers in exchange for guaranteed supplies. Today they are sitting on billions in cash.
I doubt such a deal could remain secret due to SEC filings from Apple. Not to mention the fact that the suppliers will want to say "Look at us! We just got a billion dollars!" so that they may boost their stock prices. If we haven't heard about Apple making such a deal, then it probably hasn't happened. And it may not happen easily. Everyone is using flash storage now, and there is likely to be a lot of concern over supply. The big players may not want to make a deal with Apple to guarantee a supply so that they do not artificially limit the supply for their own products. Of course with a few extra billion, you could possibly increase your production significantly.
400,000 miles? That's nothing. As a retired commercial driver, I averaged 120,000 miles a year and that's just a single truck. With all the commercial rigs (18 wheelers) on the road with a combined avg miles in excess of 1billion a year, with less then 1 accident per 250,000 miles avg (google for current stats), that simply doesn't impress me.
Now if you were talking 100,000 cars averaging 400,000 miles a year w/o accident, then I'd be willing to listen but when you mix in idiots like Joe and Tina Sixpack who's either drinking, fixing their god damn hair, reading a fucking book, talking on the cell phone and a whole rash of other stupid activities, you aint going to match the accident rate that commercial drivers have until you take Joe & Tina Sixpack's licenses away.
That's exactly my point. He's pointing out a handful of Google operated automated cars. I'm Joe Sixpack, more or less, and I have gone 400k or more in my lifetime. My point is that commercial drivers do amazingly well and that his example just isn't statistically relevant.

Until you have hundreds of thousands of these cars on the road, you're just talking statistical anomalies. I've probably driven close to 400,000 miles myself without ever getting into an accident (maybe even more). I also know a professional driver who has millions of miles and has never been in an accident.
First off, respect to all the airmen. Second; I can't help but be a bit puzzled by the arteries in the legs. Why would radiation damage stop at the knees? (I assume the lower legs were exposed the most).
They replaced the major arteries up the entire leg. And all I can tell you is what my uncle related to me. I can't say whether there is any factual or scientific basis for what he says. I can attest to the folllowing: 1) He did drop nuclear weapons 2) He did have major arteries replaced in his legs. I cannot attest to the fact that 1) Supposedly every pilot in his unit had to have this done and 2) that the damage was due to nuclear weapons testing and not, perhaps, due to the way they sat in the airplane for hours on end.

From what I understand, military personnel are seldom warned about potential health risks (e.g., ionizing radiation, Agent Orange, depleted uranium), and are then often provided with inadequate treatment for the conditions that arise therefrom. Although I oppose the MIC, I am further opposed to the poor treatment of human beings, regardless of their employer — I wish your uncle the best, and hope the VA meets his needs.
He was doing this literally right after WWII. At the time, my dad was living in the same area and the whole town of Las Vegas would turn out to watch the bomb drops. I don't think anyone understood the long term health implications of the nuclear testing that was going on at the time. My uncle has had a long and happy life. He's a fighter and still is able to do most of the things he loves. I've never heard him complain about what happened to him as a result of the bomb testing he did. He is in his 80's now.
Sorry. Was in a hurry when I wrote that. They have had all the major arteries in their legs replaced with synthetic ones, supposedly. I know he has had it done, I just don't know about the rest of the men in his unit. But supposedly the regular exposure to radiation from the bomb blasts (which hit his legs first, coming from below) damaged the vascular tissue in his legs very badly. Either way, he has way more health problems than anyone else in the family.
