I got a demo of the Full Color display where I work now.. We do aviation software for the Pocket PC, and it would be a great matchup to use in a airplane, where you don't want your focus concentrated on a pocketpc screen, rather on your real instruments and out the windows if your not flying by instruments.. All these slashdot weenies that have said its vapor, we got to check it out here, they really do have working prototypes.. the only problems, and they are working on them, is that certain colors don't naturally show up correctly (magenta for example), because the background noise factor plays down the color, even when it is a LOT brighter than the rest of the colors.. anyhow, it does work, and I got to see a demo first hand.. Thanks Microvision...
Walmart uses Novell's NDS and eDirectory extensively... Its funny, they have thousands of servers running NDS, and about 200 running AD, but there are more MS guys to run the AD servers than there are for ALL the NDS servers.. amazing eh? Thats proof enough for me.. (ps, and most of these guys know what the f*** they are doing, unlike most mcse's or whatnot's...)
Whats the difference to being on the Net?

Okay, so whats the difference of being at something like this, or being on the net? Not much;) I am sure that thier network is probably pretty laggy unless they spent some huge bux on the equipment.. doubtful though.. anyhow.. I'd rather stay at home and be comfortable than go to THAT.. now, a real LAN party is better.. a few half dozen or so friends, a few quake chicks, some pr0n.. and thats fun...
And then you get into naming conflicts down the road.. MS has this problem now, and is dealing with it partly with the new fandangled "Private Packages" or whatever in XP.. Basically unsharing shared libraries.. There DOES need to be separation that can be controlled more than it can be now, or we are going to see problems in the future. Have you ever installed a package and a file was already there? Were they the same file? Do you know? Version? Its a bad idea to clump everything together... what we need is to make a path statement extension, that basically says/usr/bin/*/ to allow everything one directory down, OR, allow packages to register their own paths in their install directories (ie, a file that gets installed and then pointed to to say "search here for executables as well"). Make it an config in/etc that points to these other little files that contain places to look, then at boot time enumerate that all out and make a tree of the executables.. fast and easy to manage..
But doesn't User ID's, Passwords, and File Permissions all hold a key component to copyright protection. ie, not allowing someone to copy/have access to files they should not have access to?
Okay, so they put errors in the digital side... Why can't we make a filter that does the same CISC filtering that the Audio CD's do, while ripping it.. I am 100% sure that this will be broken in no time via a method like this.. The only reason there are clicks and pops is because we aren't doing the error correction that the audio player is doing.. We can do the same thing in code, can we not? This seems to me to be a stopgap measure to hinder (but not stop) the free trading of MP3's.. Your common joe isn't going to be able to do it (right now), but in 3-6 months, there will be 'CopyRip.EXE' and it will fix the pops and clicks as it is ripped into WAV/MP3...
Is that the new smart tags I have been hearing all my buddies talk about that is the next best thing since sliced bread? Interesting about the whole mono thing! I didn't know that!
Its funny how the Yahoo story is DIFFERENT from the original ZDnet story...
Look at this:
From Yahoo News: "But what might seem like a grand experiment is also a shrewd marketing move by IBM. None of IBM's server competitors--such as Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard or Compaq Computer--has offered similar programs."
From ZDnet News: "But what might seem like a grand experiment is also a shrewd marketing move by IBM, echoing a similar program at its server rival Compaq Computer."

I tested it out, and actually installed the dang thing.. I don't think it will ever cut it, because it lacks a few things that people have come to know and love: Consistency in UI design (it uses its own renderer.. this is not always a bad thing, just if oyu used standard system renderers it would look the same on all the platforms that it supports, ie, on a mac, it would look the same as any other mac (or those that are made to look the same), same on win, same on linux..) Also, it does not integrate with the browser very well.. sure, it is a plugin, but it is basically its own application, it takes over ALL browser functionality. The back and forward buttons of the browser no longer work, thats a BIG minus... and, it is DOG SLOW... The sample content they have is large, a set of HTML pages of the same would be larger than it is, of course, but that download speed is spread out over each page, and not as one huge download. ALSO, the rendering engine is slow, not optimized very much.. Most of this stuff can be overcome, but you need to overcome it fast to even be thought of again.. this project is doomed to failure because it tried to do too much on its own, without using standard things already available.. Anyhow, done with my rant.. "I" won't be using it anytime soon, thats for sure..
I don't know where, but I saw a briefcase computer someone made by using a motherboard with built in network, and then using a pci riser card modified so the video card would lay flat, and power supply and all was on one side of the case (under plexiglass), then monitor was on the other side, made from a flat panel display, gloriously taken out of its packaging and carefully mounted in the suitcase.. then he just put ports for keyboard/mouse/gameport and everything else was builtin (speakers included).. makes for a nice setup I think;)
as of yesterday, one of the instances of the Walmart database was 29TB.. just over what that one guy said was the largest in the world.. but you are correct in saying that the data, for the main part, is spread out over a bunch of databases. Working at the data center is a lot of fun... trust me... (never go home when there is a problem = loads of fun)
What happens at night? Does this mean we will only be producing the bad stuff at night? And I am sure this has been mentioned before, what about the other byproducts of Photosynthesis? I mean, won't these things want to grow larger and larger, and eventually CLOG the smokestack? At least with that, you can use the byproduct as fertilizer.. (right?.. I am pretty sure anyhow, as long as there are no trace sulfurs or anything to contaminate it, algae would make a good fertilizer if it were dead)
I've been looking for uses of TellMe's VoiceXML stuff for a while, and now I have found it. It has superb audio quality for over-the-phone content, plus it can handle as many files as you want to stream, and it takes VOICE commands, no more dialing what song you want! Anyhow, I've already submitted this solution to them, and now its just a game of waiting and seeing what they think. I think its great, because it goes onto a 1800 number, its FREE, and can handle any number of simultaneous calls you would need. PLUS, you don't have to have the phone lines dedicated for a dial-a-song machine, you don't have to worry about equipment upkeep, and you don't have to worry about your last machine dying. Can't get any better. At any rate, hope they go that route, it's a good service.
It took commands from IRC, which was an idea that no one had thought of before
Hahahah... that is funny! Ever hear of Eggdrop? There have been flood scripts for this irc bot for ages, and you can network them together in a botnet so they all talk together, and then you can make them all do the same thing, and then send them commands via IRC. They have TCL/TK scripting, and a lot of other goodies. Its been around for a LONG time, and I am sure since I have gotten out of the hacking scene, there are others. Have any of these gotten high-profile news articles written about them? NO, they are too common in most cases, as normal irc bots.
Jay
(just because the news thinks its the first time something has happened, does not make it true.)
Maybe the rocks were made into "volcanic" material when the meterorite hit them, and they are measuring that, instead of the "last vocanic activity" on mars? it would be the age of the meteorite then, not the age when there was volcanic activity. It has been known that some large impacts will melt rock. well, if this is what they are measuring, then it all makes sense. We find newer rocks more often because the older rocks get buried with time in our planets normal cycling.
This just proves that Mozilla is too bloated as well. What is a browser for? Why would we want to make a browser that can be programmed to do anything we want? Is this not just the same thing as saying "Hey, lets create our own programming language and say "Hey, everyone should use this because it can do ANYTHING".."... It can't, it shouldn't, and if it could, I'd say it wasn't properly designed. If it can do anything you want, then there has to be a lot of obscure methods and techniques involved to fit the small crowd of people that do weird things. Leave the programming up to the best choice of platforms. Stuff like this just bugs me! Arrrghh... why is the computer world so stupid and insane? Why doesn't someone figure out that the future of computers is more than just "A killer application".. Comon, what happens to mozilla when "x" technology comes out? Does it lag behind 4 years because it has a,b,c,d,...,w technology already, and has to make sure it interoperates with all those perfectly before shipping a new release? This is arcane, this is bloatware.. Separate out the functionality into its on definable areas, and let those areas thrive on their own, without the bloat of the rest. If one needs it, let them use it.
I'm ranting now, I should quit...

If I say "I hate (companynamehere)!", will that too have to be removed from a "public" posting/archive? What happens if there were a way to get the slashdot archives via email? Would everyone that recieved those posts have to remove them from their own email? How far does this continue to go before we are just drones that don't have a voice and cannot change what has happened? Jeez.. Freedom of Speech is what America was founded on. Is it illegal to link to content on the internet, because "Comments Containing Links to Internet Sites with Unauthorized Copies of the Specification" does not seem to be illegal to me, nor does posts about how to bypass the EULA. If there is a way to bypass the EULA, then MS needs to fix it on their end, someone saying how you can do something illegal does not mean that the comment is illegal, it only means that the act of doing it is illegal. Sheesh! Just annoyed and aggravated about this.
This type of thing is ridiculous. Don't worry about it, its not that big of an issue! Yes, I would use Image Filtering, but its not going to break my heart if it isn't there. And, on the side of "Its stealing", the people that would use this type of technology are the people that do not even pay attention to banner ad's in the first place, more than likely. Ask yourself: "When was the last time I actually clicked on a banner ad"?
Do you think that if a situation occurred (as did happen to me lately), and my original Metallica CD was damaged (stepped on and shattered), that I should not be allowed to use a service such as Napster to recover my "now useless" music? When you purchase a CD, are you purchasing the actual plastic, or the right to use the material ON that plastic? If it is the latter of the two, then I would think that this would be a valid use of Napster, and going after EVERYONE would NOT be feasible. Jay Kramer jay@mojomole.com

The reason they have 386SX chips is because of an array of things that come together.
A) They need to design new cooling systems since radiant heat dissipation does not exist in zero gravity (heat cannot rise in zero g).
B) They need to harden some of the shielding on the systems so that stray radiation does not have a negative effect on bits.
C) They need to have special chips made for stray radiation.
D) They need to be flight tested and sturdy.
E) They don't necessarily NEED blazingly fast computers to do the tasks required.
F) Development cycles for the software are much slower (There is not Fix/Release type thing, its Fix/Test/Test/Test/Test/Test/Fix/Test.../Release)
G) This is what is proven to work through time.
Is that clear enough?
Jay
