The major issue, from what I have read so far, seems to be the addition of features to the Windows operating system. What percentage of Misrosoft's revenues come from the OS?
Could opening the source to the operating system and allowing other manufacturers to produce their own versions (also open sourced) be considered a compromise that would allow Microsoft to "continue to innovate," break their monopoly hold on the OS market, and have a neglegable economic impact on Redmond and Washington state?
Linux distrubutions are all based on the same core components, however there seems to be a healthy competition between the distributions even while some of them are making open contributions which their competitors can then incorporate. This seems a logical approach that would be good for all parties involved, even Microsoft, as their OS could become more stable. Is there any chance for this sort of approach to be taken?

I don't see what anyone would want to hear from JP as it would be about as honest as the rest of his crap. I am really disappointed to see/. even recognizing this individual's existence. At this point *any* publicity is good for his business, it's not like anything on/. can damage his reputation. Go ahead and moderate this to flamebait or troll, but I felt the need to say it.

Make a complete copy of idea and mail it to yourself via US Post Office certified mail (do not use UPS or FedEx as they are not federal agencies). Position the postage over the only way to open package. Keep ypur package sealed (in a safety deposit box is good). I would say get it notorized, but that would be another person in the loop and this is actually a poor man's copyright and copyright is much easier to defend. I do not know if this would stand up to any court, but it is better than nothing if you don't have the $ to apply for a patent.

Right now companies are not going to produce "desktop" software or drivers for Linuc unless they can be shown there is enough support for it to be profitable. Try writing polite letters to the customer service departments of the manufacturers for whivh you would like to see Linux support. For example of you want Creative to support their PC-DVD write them and let them know:

I have been using Linux for a couple of years now and I am a real advocate (but not rabbid) and I definately have to agree with the consistency issue. It can be really annoying to have to stop and think "hmm, now which modifier did this program use for hotkeys, was copy 'control c' or 'alt c.' That is my one major annoyance with Linux (and Unix in general), it would be really nice for there to be a set standard for hotkeys. On the Mac I know that no matter what program I am in 'command c' is copy and 'command v' is paste, on Winblows I know 'control c' is copy and'control v' is paste. It definately adds to the user friendliness of a platform to have a few simple standards like those.

The only reason I still have Windows on any of my computers (the one with a DVD ROM) is so I can watch my DVDs, I would love to be able to get a Linux driver for my decoder board so I could completely eliminate Windows95. I could buy a stand alone viewer, but why waste the money when all I need is a driver. I like open source, however I know the driver could not legally be open source and would settle for just having a driver. I really don't want to buy another decoder board just to get a driver either. I have written Creative Labs (a responsible, non-incendary request), however they did not bother to respond to my letter.

I heard this broadcast too, it raised an interesting question about the effect of continuing to learn at the same (accelerated) rate as a child and the access speed once memories become too numerous. One scientist stated he could duplicate the teat results with amphedimines. There was more to it than that, but that is all I can recall off the top of my head.

I wonder what sort of security precautions have been implimented. Imagine cruising around with a laptop and having appleshare access to anyone's computer who didn't know any better than to password protect (most home users).

I have a 2 year old ViewSonic (P775) which displays up to 1600x1200. I imagine there are better 17" monitors out there now.

The question was in reference to the drivers for 3.9.15, I have been running the 3.3.x glint drivers since they were released on SuSE's site. The release notes said the card support for 3.9.15 was limited and though it says glint and 3DLabs I would prefer not to DL and compile it if it inly works on the actual glint chips and not on the permedia2.

' The brief claims that Clinton's executive order and subsequent Commerce Department export rules do not pose a "real and substantial threat" to free speech. '
There is no such thing as not posing a "real and substantial threat" to our freedom of speech. Any law or court ruling that in any way compromises freedom of speech, however small the compromise is one step closer to the loss of our constitutional rights. Our constitutional rights are slowly being eroded away, to let any of our constitutional rights be compromised in any way is highly dangerous. The founders of our country entrusted us with the responsibility to monitor and control our government that it would be "of the people, for the people." We must preserve our rights and fight any government action that defies them, we must never let the government control us, we as a people must control it. Just voting doesn't fulfill that responsibility, after all, with the electoral college the majority vote does not mean a thing.

Many studies have shown that Americans tend to buy branded products at a greater price than generic equivalents. This is especielly true of corporate buyers. People seem to want a brand to "stand behind" the product and corporate buyers are considering who they can sue if something goes wrong. I have come from an advertising background and have really grown to hate it, but it seems to be true.

OK, so I am lame because I don't know all the acronyms, flame away. But could someone point me to some sort of document that gives meanings for a good # of them.
Thanks

It's a feature of the OS that allows you to tune it to what you are doing. Besides, even if you did run X as long as you had nothing that required X updates running I doubt it would really make that much of a difference (though I could be completely wrong here).
