Companies use to change *just enough* to create a possible gray area stealing ideas/patents/etc... As long as your legal fees still leave a nice net profit.... Bob's your Uncle!
I worked at such a company for 2 years, back in the 1980's.
I saw this years ago (1990-4?) happen on early SPARC processors. I think I remember 2 or 3 Sparcstations (1,1+, 2's) out of 40 or so we had, suddenly getting pokey. And in about a week or two becoming unusable. This would have been 20-50 Mhz CPUs droping to 5-10 Mhz (or effectivly feeling like that) - I remember them being replaced by SUN for free...Not thats this has any bearing on this story....
I too am a mild mannered *NIX Engineer at a huge multinational. It's easy to baffle IT into coughing up a spare PC, then throw linux on it. Now I have a Corporate approved XP PC, and my Linux box. I can't remember a single shop where something like this hasn't worked work.
Obviously your VW bug wasn't old enough. My 58 beetle had a manual canvas-type sunroof. Also, no petrol gauge was available! To the right of the accelerator was a fuel petcock, kinda like a motorcycle, only there was no Off, just On and Reserve. But it had an ashtray and lighter, probably so you could have a relaxing smoke after you ran out of petrol.
Im not sure this has any basis in reality other than a quick-blinders-on-snapshot-of-2007.
Look back 100 years (in the US) and you have J.P. Morgans, by anyones standards much worse that the current situation (except perhaps J.P. Morgan's standards).
I think it's everyone fault *Traditional record companies have moved away from "a business for music" to "the buisness of music"; and musicians who use to "play music for real people in a live venue" (in hopes people would like the music enough to want to buy a record) week after week, now appear to be looking for "that one hit song" the first time at bat, in hopes of landing VW comercial..
Imagine you have the only Mercedes-Benz dealership, every morning customers are lined up, check-books ready. Year after year. You are rich beyond imagination.
Then one day this fellow shows up with a Vespa and says, "You should sell these Vespa scooters too.."

I'm keeping a close eye on my neighbor's 911 Turbo with the I Love Jesus bumber sticker. The minute The Rapture hits, that baby is mine!
