Didn't Arthur C. Clarke have maglev-launched spacecraft in 2001:A Space Odyssey (the book)? Who knows, if NASA gets its act together, we might have this stuff by 2001.
I agree with your gripes about the default installation, especially the limited tool set issue. It doesn't even come with a decent shell - just plain vanilla sh and csh.
Look beyond the politics for a bit...What we have here is a way to produce plastics without needing to have to use more fossil fuels and expensive (and toxic) manufacturing processes. I love the idea of being able to grow my computer's case.:P
I run the primary server for a small, but growing IRC network. (http://www.pfnet.org/ for information), and all of out servers run Linux. They've successfully handled quite high loads, with nary a complaint.
This is very, very, very scary. What's next, keyboards that have monitoring circuity hardwired in? Monitors with hidden cameras? Mice with hidden mics? Or mabe I'm just paranoid. But I doubt it.
Whether this turns out well or not, this is an incredibly nifty idea. Colonization of the moon would never happen if it were up to NASA, but a commercial undertaking will probably have the flexibility and funding to do it. I would definitely love to go.
It might be interesting to put together a "dictionary of domains" (each entry is www.{whatever}.com. I'm sure you wouldn't have trouble with most of it - the Xs, Qs, Ys, and Zs might be trouble, though.
The open-source encryption software mentioned last week is called GPG (GNU Privacy Guard), and can be obtained from http://www.gnupg.org/. It was developed entirely outside the US, and therefore will be free from any restrictions bills such as SAFE place on crypto software.
Anyone got a link to a changelog? 2.2.13 hasn't even been announced on kernelnotes, let alone edge, yet.

Do I smell a conspiracy afoot? :P
VRML actually stands for Virtual Reality Modelling Language, not Markup Language. Just a little thing.
I just escaped AOL recently, through our getting @Home cable. Now I'm going to be delivered back into its suffering embrace?
AAAAAAAAAAAACK!

Whoops. Sorry about that. Anyway, regulations on crypto of ANY kind are bad, imho.

I'd also be interested in getting my hands on W...old computer stuff is interesting. Anyone want to point me to somewhere where I could see/get it?
