So what if one company has decided to bail out of the world of Linux?
Linux is doing fine by itself
No offense to anyone, but I was a major Corel fan too, but even I knew that it was doomed to failure
Right now, more than anything, us linux/bsd people need to support and open source Office replacement, like Koffice, or Star office
Giving us binaries, that require WINE is something that Linux/bsd users should never stoop too. We showed the world that free and open doesn't mean "suck", it means great!
Power on Linux/bsd users!! and NEVER think about windows binaries again!!
yes, I know that in today's world, sony rules the world and what not
but no matter what I still Like nintendo...
could the guys at slashdot please make a new ps2 topic, so for those of us who like nintendo, sega, or even atari don't have to be bothered with ps2 related matters
this guy is an @$$hole... what he forgets is that Linux isn't COMMERCIAL... sure we have RedHat and others trying to "commercialize" Linux... but guess what folks??... Linux was made by the people... for the people... (something the US gov isn't) What most forget is that because of the nature of development of Linux.. IT WILL NEVER BE BUG FREE... but oh wait... NO OS WILL EVER BE BUG FREE... not even W2k =) Linux may have more buys simply because there really isn't a MAJOR commercial company paying people tons of $$ to constantly work on.. in fact... most major companies will reap the rewards from Linux... and never give it back... Linux may also have more buys and what-not simply for one reason... hackers... the most mis-understood group on the Internet... hackers love Linux... haha One last thing... wouldn't you expect NT and 2000 to have a billion more bugs... or did Micor$oft sponcer this report too... Power to the bird that can't fly... phoxix at techie dot com
I know that this may sound weird... but why can't for once both the devs at KDE and GNOME work together?... The world of UNIX has forever been fragmented... there are about a BILLION different variations of them.. heck, there are even a billion IRC servers for no real reason.. but having to choose between 2 desktops is just stupid... I know that the people at GNOME want to have something that is 100% free... and as a coder myself... I respect that.. but is there anything wrong with BOTH of the GUI devs to work together?... not only will this be a great thing on their parts (whatever those maybe), but it also will help those like us USERS who hate having to actually need to use a desktop once in a while... (face it people: the shell is the greatest thing in the world... but it does get really really ANNOYING sometimes) and why is Redhat so damn in favor of GNOME?
I feel sorry for all the "hacktivists" in this world. Though their intentions are correct, they will forever be misunderstood by society at large. The 2600 is the perfect example. The members of 2600 don't actually advocate doing "bad" things, however they are always informing the public of the ramifications and outcomes that actions taken by others lead to. And yet, even with this great "public service", they will be misunderstood. Why? Simple. Everyone will forever think of them nothing but the avarage "hacker". However they are far for more than "hackers". If anyone here attended the Hope 2000 meeting as I did, you will know for a fact that these people are actually important to society. These people help others see a side that they normally would never see due to the overly powerful government and really really really big comercial companies. Hopefully, the 2600 group will win, and maybe these hactivists can finally see the changes that they so advocate for in society.
I think that it is great that the US government is finally trying to do something about consumer privacy. Maybe all those ridiculous Internet start-ups may finally learn a thing or two about doing business in the REAL world. However there is just one slight problem to taking actions against companies such as Toysmart. Thought it may take action in the short term (and of course there will be long term ramifications) it doesn't truly help the problem in the long run. A more effective route of action is to actually INFORM and to EDUCATE the common public about privacy on the Internet and what it truly means to them.
I maybe only 16, but I see a ridiculous amounts of ads on TV about how not to have sex and not take drugs. Even though the message that these ads try to convey is great and meaningful, I really don't care about them half the time. However, my question is that would it really hurt the government or anyone to put up some ads about privacy on the Internet? If we are told that compulsory education is the panacea for all of society's problems, why not take the time to educate the public at large by what is still considered to be one of the greatest forms of communication: TV.
These stupid people don't realize that there will be NO security standard of any sort. Sooner or later these losers will realize that DVD encryption will fail. Its either that or how Hollywood realizes that in the future everyone won't go to the movies to watch movies, they'd rather download them on their personal T3's....
But why should we care?

Thank you all that worked hard for making Linux what it is today ... thank you ... As for Micro$oft ... "watch out for the bird that can't fly..."
