You're right the free speech issues here are minimal. The real problem is how we deal with the mentally ill in this country. He needs help, not prison.

Unfortunately, in this puritanical country mental illness is treated like demonic posession. That is, something to punish the victim for to make ourselves feel more righteous. That's even more sick than this guy is.

We should not pass crappy laws and then blame the judges for upholding them.

We're blaming the judge for not upholding the law. Specifically, that part of the law which states that "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed".

You don't have to be on the SCOTUS to knock down a law that is blatantly unconstitutional. A law that conflicts with the constitution is null and void at any level.

"Clone" is a pretty inclusive term in this context. When a game became popular, lots of companies would try to capitalize on the fad by making a similar game. Hence you get "pacman clones" like Ladybug or KC Munchkin, or "Doom clones" like Dark Forces or Duke 3d. In that context, this is clearly a SMB clone. It's worth noting that no other side scrolling platformers exist on the 2600.

Prevailing wisdom was that an SMB1 clone would not be possible on the 2600. Now it's been done. That's amazing. A 3d SMB is well within the capabilities of the Saturn, and is a worthy hobby project, but not in the same league at all. The Saturn game was written in BASIC, the 2600 game was written in assembly.

We have all main road (and city) car movements tracked in real-time through an enormous increase in ANPR

    No freedom of speech. Bollocks.

You're just in denial here. The Public Order Act of 1986 makes insults an arrestable offense.

No right to self defence. Pretty much bollocks.

Again, this sounds like denial on your part. There are way too many stories like this:

Hertfordshire Police officers warned Klass she should not have used a knife to scare off the teens because carrying an "offensive weapon" - even in her own home - was illegal.

What actually seems to be the case is that the UK officially acknowledges the right to self defense, but has put so many conditions on it that you're likely to be victimized again by the state after doing so. That's not what I'd call having the right to self-defense.

Now I'll happily grant you your other points. I won't claim that the US is better than the UK. I am actually pretty sure that it is not. But that doesn't mean the UK is a free country.

How cheap that 16:9 monitor is is irrelevant when that 15 year old 4:3 CRT is a sunk cost and still provides more horizontal resolution than the widescreen. You can go down to Goodwill today and buy a CRT with better resolution than "HD" for less than $5. That's fucking ridiculous.

This is also why resolutions of more than 1080 lines cost more: there is simply a smaller market for them

If we standardized on HDTV resolutions with 1600 lines, there would be just as much demand for them as there are 1080 lines. Then everyone would benefit from the economies of scale.
