They really should. Relying on a business that their competitors have even larger contracts with opens them up to taking damage from bribery, like if Nvidia were to pay TSMC a little extra for a bigger chunk of the 40nm silicon (assuming this isn't happening already!). Turning production to Globalfoundries could help them avoid such an issue.
I dunno about that. Intel was found to have broken laws in Europe and they employ quite a few people over there. Perhaps it is possible that breaking the law can cause charges to be brought against you. Who knows?
Remember: communication is a privilege, not a right. Commit slander, libel, or insider trading verbally? Lose your tongue and lips. Commit them via writing? Lose your hands. Is this where we're going?
Step one: Convert a minor crime that virtually everyone does at some point into a major one...Step 2: Globalize the practice...Step 3: Probable cause for all police forces, reason to monitor everyone.
Personally, I would rather see the end of all commercial content producers than to see this happen.
Remove a method of communication if you break the law with it (slander, libel, insider trading rules, yelling fire in a theater)?
3 strikes on speech: vocal cords cut out
3 strikes on writing, typing, or sign language: hands severed
3 strikes on cell phones: must communicate via voice and writing for the rest of your life, unless you had those removed in earlier violations
Good thing patent laws weren't around (or as ridiculous) when the various inventions leading up to today's technology happened.
It would really cripple a lot of industries if we all had to pay royalties on the wheel, metallurgy, and sliced bread.
He's not saying 25% of the market is people using an NVidia GPU to run PhysX. He's talking about ATI having a sizeable chunk of the GPU market and saying making your physics PhysX-exclusive means you've spend all that effort and still missed a large chunk of the market.
I thought having the internet and IT as a whole attempting to operate in one language was, in the big picture, a benefit to IT.
Even something as simple as like making URLs with non-western characters could build up a segregation of the internet that we were so close to conquering.
Not to mention the accompanying craploads of URL spoofing fraud that will inevitably come as a direct result...
I am honestly torn on this issue. On one hand, I feel the news agencies need to adapt their business model. On the other hand, if news agencies decide that news is unprofitable and just stop doing it, most of our news will come from a source that has no need to profit: the government.
That isn't to say that for-profit news organizations don't use the news as a means to propagandize, but I know what governments like do when they are the only voice.
Can anyone lend me some peace of mind here?
It's a dangerous place to be when governments tell people what they can and can't communicate and how they may or may not communicate that information.
Every other industry adapts to market conditions except the content industries. All they do is lobby governments so that they can maintain their business model and not go the way of the wagon wheel makers.
I would love to see every person suspected of copyright infringement and brought to trial be charged with stealing (theft).
These copyright holders and copyright protection organizations who keep up this mantra of copyright infringement = theft should put their money where their mouth is.
Copyright infringment is stealing.
Disturbing the peace is murder.
Driving without a license is embezzlement.
Any other minor crimes that we can rename to more serious ones?
There are plently of people willing to sacrifice their lives (and the lives of others) in traffic accidents in the name of efficiency. Look at the youtube videos of electric car crash tests!
Some announcements have even been repeated. Is slashdot becoming the mouthpiece of Nvidia?
That's awfully nice of Intel to agree not to block them from OEM sales anymore, considering it was against the law and all.
The subject is all I have to say.

What if the theories about sabotage from the future are right? It would make my small bits tingle.

Sparc distinguishes itself from the myriad businesses that have "Spark" in their name by virtue of their spelling. Rage...rising...
And the evidence continues to mount against him. All lies!
Well I certainly hope this news story doesn't start an incendiary flamewar!

What's with Congress and their constant attempts to pass unenforceable measures over the last century or two?

Don't forget pens and paper!
When The Pirate Bay was owned by people had little money, they were frequently sued by people with money. Now the opposite is true.

Sounds like they are pretty unimaginative in the naming department. Isn't Aibo a robotic dog from Sony?
