  1. From an engineering perspective on Ask Slashdot: How Many of You Actually Use Math? · · Score: 1

OK, I'm not your typical engineer - I have a doctorate in Chemical Engineering and I work at a National Laboratory.

There is a common meme that engineers just plug numbers into formulas. Let's suppose that is true - who develops the formulas? That's the job for those (supposedly) over educated engineering nerds like me.

I use calculus about twice a week, and about four times a year, I have a really interesting problem using advanced differential equations or advanced statistics.

i just want to point out that there are occupations for which mathematical skill is essential..

  2. Mixed units are more fun! on Five-second Pints · · Score: 1

I worked at a duPont plant for a while. DuPont tends to measure throughput in pounds and temperature in Celsius. All the company's engineering data reflect this, and some interesting units are used. My favorite was the pound-Celsius unit (PCU). It was the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water one degree Celsius. It turned out to be pretty handy for expressing heat capacity.

Atlanta also creates thunderstorms that travel to the east. Augusta (a town 150 miles east of Atlanta) gets a number of midnight storms created by the heat from Atlanta. I've seen Doppler images of the Southeast US that are fairly clear, except for this string of thunder cells steadily moving east from Atlanta.

I always wondered what that facility out in the middle of Kirkland Air Base was. It's quite visible when flying into Albuquerque. I thought that they were exerimenting with a way to shoot down terrorist planes using sunlight. (Imagine burning up a terrorist's plane over New York by training all the mirrored windows of the skyscrapers on it.)

Of course, burning up airplanes wouldn't work well at night.

  5. I like Saphires on Diamonds - Are They Really Worth the Cost? · · Score: 1

When I got engaged twelve years ago (married nine months later) I bought a very pretty emerald-cut saphire (with small diamond bagettes). My wife loved it, and even now she has comments on how pretty her ring is. The wedding bad was alternating saphires and diamonds, like an "eternity band".
These days, I might replace the diamonds with amathyist, which make a nice contrast to the the sapphire.

Well, actually in a laptop -uh- computer it is.
I have a 15" -ahem- vaio and I find it rather difficult to use in the cramped seats of airplanes. Well, at least in caoch. It performs well in first class and on my desktop.

Seriously, your -cough- laptop can be too big.

I've advised my friends to get 14" versions.

  7. Hyper Sneaker Net on New Internet2 Land Speed Record · · Score: 1

It's funny how the expressions for the top end of sneaker-net have changed over the years. In my college days, it was a station-wagon full of mag tapes. (You know, the old 80 MB reel to reel things you see in 70s era TV shows.) In my father's day, it was a car full of punch cards. (They were the..., oh never mind)

    Let's see now...
With the back seat folded down, you probably could get about four rows across and eight down, each say 15 high. That gives us 480 tapes, about 38 GB. At 60 mph, we get 230 GB mph or 640 MB mile per second. These guys just did 7608 * 401 = MB miles per second, or 3 TB miles per second, beating my old white station wagon by a factor of 4800.

    Ok, I'm impressed.

  11. This story actually teaches a lot... on Do-it-yourself CPU Water Cooler · · Score: 5, Informative

This story actually teaches a lot about how not to build a water-cooling system for a CPU.

    Some specific observations:
    1. The low delta T (temperature difference) for the water going through the system is a sure indication of low efficiency. The most likely culprit is poor contact between the block and the CPU. Thin sheeting was used, and ripples are clearly visible in the pictures. The block is probably only touching in a few places and there is no mention of using thermal grease. A stiffer bottom plate was clearly called for.
    2. As mentioned elsewhere, hose clamps should have been used. (String? Let's not go there...)
    3. There is no radiator to dump the heat back to the environment. The heat transfer from the surface of the tank is probably not sufficient to keep the temperatures low. The radiator should be after the pump, to dump the heat from the pump also.
Perhaps the story should have been posted with the "laugh, it's funny" icon.

BTW, I prefer Indium foil as the thermal gasket between the CPU and heat sink, not thermal grease. Unfortunately, Indium is usually as expensive as gold.
