And they're not buying them for the technology either, because they don't use it
Companies have other technologies - in some cases technologies that make up the product. You also buy companies for customers, a piece of a market because you have the ability to make it profitable, factories, etc... There are many reason.
They buy them and shut them own because they are worried that it will steal market share from them.
Show me one instance - just one - where that was the case.
If you do have an example (I seriously doubt it), the owners of the company made the decision to do it. If MS waved some money under my nose for my property, I would just at it - you or anyone else have no right judging a decision I made with my property.
They buy up cool products just to shut them down...
They shut them down because they're not very profitable or unprofitable. This is done in every other business - it's not just a Microsoft thing. Apple has done it. Where is the NeXT computer, by the way? Automobile companies do it ALL the time.
Believe me, if a "cool" product was making money, MS would be right there promoting it. Just because you think it's cool doesn't mean it's a good product or it's a product worth producing.
And as far as buying companies for their technology, that too is done in every industry.
I hear so often when I'm looking for work that so and so is in IT and maybe I should send them my resume - I'd be a shoe in. When I ask exactly what they do, the response is a condescending "He and his company are in computers!"
Then I have to explain, if someone was a nurse, would you say they were in medical? Or how about a doctor? No. You would say they were a nurse or doctor. Saying someone is in "medical" could mean they're a x-ray tech, lab tech, housekeeper, janitor, medical office accountant, EMT, ambulance driver, etc.., etc...
Or I'll mention how someone in food service could be a restaurant owner, chef, or the bus boy.
When I have to write a Windows GUI app, C# rocks! I can design the UI whip off the code and be done with it. It's better than MFC and after writing countless message loops in win32 and OS/2 for that matter, I don't think writing more GUI boiler plate code, using the APIs to match resource IDs, and all that mindless coding will do any good - especially when I need the time to figure out an algorithm or other problems. And I can still do low level stuff (really low level) with P/Invokes, so the only thing I'm really missing out is busy work. And if there's a time when I DO need the control and abilities of unmanaged code, well there's the C++ stuff.
You have only one? If so, I don't think you're really the problem.
I know someone that has 12 TVs and a Wii each for half of them. Can he watch all of them? Nope. He leaves ALL of them on so he can walk around the house, go to the bathroom, and whatever without ever being out of site of a TV. Don't get me started on people who: have 12+ room McMansions and only live in 2 rooms; folks who "need" a Hummer to drive or "need" a 5 Liter V8 engine so they can merge with traffic; folks who crank up the air conditioning and then turn on an electric blanket on their bed because it's too cold. The list goes on....
I hereby challenge the free and open source community to make a serials of software tutorials for various Windows operating systems, Windows software, web sites, etc and provide those videos free via downloads or web site streaming to engage and or challenge the Video Professor company, and provide free alternatives that people on Slashdot and other technical web sites can refer to our friends and relatives who might get taken in via Video Professor, and instead we can redirect them to the FOSS web site of software tutorial videos or download them and burn our own FOSS Software Professor CD-R disks and give them to them for free.
The F/OSS community doing a Windows training video? Ahahah....OK, wavy lines...wavy line....wavy line,,,,,
Start of video.... Enter guy with black hair, black goatee, horns, pitchfork, and dressed in red. "Hi, I'm Satan and I'm here to teach you about my Operating System : Windows. Using this OS will automatically give your everlasting soul to me. Now to begin....." Every other frame will be a quick frame that says: F/OSS is the GOOD in the World. Linux is your salvation!
Please excuse the typos. For some reason my spell check on Firefox isn't working on this Fedora 12 box. ????
Back when I had TV, watching his commericals had this "too good to be true" air about them. I ignored them.
His appeal is that he makes a complicated machine, a computer, seem easy to use and he'll make it easy for you. I actually have talked a couple of people who have done business with these folks (I'd elaborate but Slashdot has a problem with anonymous proxies - yeah, like posting as an AC cuts it). They are high school graduates at best, very intimidated by computers, and many times, they have to use a computer at work and they're scared of losing their jobs over it or they're older people who want to keep in touch with kids and grandkids over the internet. Keep in mind that not everyone out there is as comfortable with computers as we are.
As aside note, I woner if this was there when the lournalists looked at the site..
After your 10-day free trial, if you decide to keep the complete set, we'll conveniently bill your credit card just $289.95.
It depends on which conservatives you mean. Most conservatives I know, myself included I'm ashamed to say, think of economic activity in the mindset of capitalism, socialism, and the hybrid systems the exist around the World. I would think, that the younger and more creative generation would think of something a bit more useful and environmentaly favorable. In other words, if you expand economic activity beyond those limited paradigms, I think the World's economy, whatever it ends up to be, will do just fine.
I'm too old and stuck with my brain washing to think of anything better myself, but I have faith in the younger folks to take us in a direction that will improve life here.
That depends on what you consider to be PC or un-PC.
Bill Cosby said some things about his community a while ago that was very un-PC, but he felt it needed to be said. White people have said the same things before (as well as less prominent Blacks) but were then called "racist" or "bigots", then ignored and in the meantime, the problems in the community continued. Of course, all of those problems were always blamed on others and never on the community - ex. not getting education because it was a "white" thing and then being angry and pissed when the only jobs they can get are janitors which then lead to more rancor and beliefs about being oppressed and what not.
And it's not only the African American community it's across all racial and religious lines . Although, it's just that it's PC to say anything about white males.
What the hell? "Troll?" I'm stating my personal experience with a service and I get branded a "troll." Nice.
I find that by doing what the psychologists call "desensitization" I can relax a bit more. So, you need to desensitize. I haven't done it in a day or two, so I'll show you:
Slashdot, gives the ignorant dumb fuckers mod points. I think they have a script that checks to see how ignorant and stupid your posts are and if you meet a certain benchmark, then they give you mod points.
See? I'll get a minus one some fucking thing and you know what? Not a goddamn fucking thing will happen. I'll go on tomorrow doing whatever what I'm doing. The mods will feel all rough and tough for upholding the community standards or some such nonsense, so they'll feel good. I feel good for explaining desensitization. And you'll see someone who gave it back to the dumbasses who modded you down.
Once again, the crowd that wants us to cut back our carbon emissions comes up with things we can't do rather than some suggestions. And their alternatives aren't viable for 10 years or more when they finally get all the kinks worked out, or electricity becomes so expensive they become economical.
We can't build new nuclear because of the NIMBY crowd. We can't build new coal fired because of the eco-nuts. We can't drill for more oil because of the morons in congress. We don't have to wait for Obama to ruin this country, these groups are doing it for us.
Hey.. mdsolar... go back and stick your head in the sand until you have grow some more FUD.
Damn straight!
I know exactly where to put the new power plants: in the neighborhoods of the major stockholders and executives of the power plants. Hey, if they're going to be making money on those things, wouldn't they want to be near their investments to keep an eye on them? They sure would!
And you're right about those Eco-Nuts! I for one have no problem with children getting lead poisoning from smelters and mercury poisoning from burning coal! And the old people and small children who are at risk for respiratory ailments from the air pollution caused by burning fossil fuels, well, fuck'em! Darwin baby!
Drilling for oil: tell me about it. Those damn eco-fags and the pussy fishermen too! And the tourism industry homos! They think that no one wants to see oil rigs when they're vacationing? They're wrong! There's nothing more beautiful that seeing an oil rig at dawn - it looks of - victory! Anyway, oil brings in a hell of a lot more money than tourism.

Yeah, like I'm going to shop there.

Your Government has all those Trillions of dollars - it's keeping it from you. That's right! All that hard work is actually helping the folks in charge. You are they're slave!
Communism is Slavery.
Your Government lies to you about everything. They will kill you all!
Lonely? Can't find a woman? Do you know why? Your Government has been shipping them overseas. They want you to be lonely. That's right! The Chinese government is keeping you away from women! Why are they doing that? Because they want you in the military to fight for them so that they can keep in power.
The Communist Party has enslaved you! Communism == slavery.
Yes, Microsoft can read your minds now! Next year, you'll have to plug this device in and wear it to run Windows.
MSFT: "Is his Windows and Office license legit? Let's read his mind and find out."
"Does he also run Linux?" "Yep. Crank up up the juice and reprogram him."
The other thing I'd like mention, being only on my second cup this morning, those guys in the graphic when looked at quickly looked like they were wearing thigh high stockings.
The manual is of some historic value as a relic of the 1950s, when we were actually trying to murder Castro with exploding cigars, but John Mulholland's actual manuals seem of little practical use, even then. Oh, I suppose there's some value in learning how to drop Roofies in your date's drink while lighting her cigarette, but the techniques developed by Mulholland wouldn't have passed muster at "The Man from Uncle." It was more "Get Smart" stuff.
Seriously, who the fuck still watches TV? There hasn't been anything good on any channel for years now, not that there was much good on in the first place.
All your neighbors. TV has become a "necessity". I overheard a guy complaining about his cable being out. I quote, "My children haven't had TV in two weeks!" I really had to stifle a laugh.
Go see a play at the local theater, watch a live band at a nearby pub, go for a walk, or read a book. Those are all much more enlightening and entertaining options.
Google will eventually have a system where as you enter the pub, you show your ID, and then that information will go into a database. Read a book? Google will collect the data from Visa and MC and AMEX to see what books you're reading and then use that data to market other shit to you. Local theater? Buy those ticket and well, you have to show your ID for pickup - again, data in the database. Live band? Show ID at the door and pay for those drink with your credit card? There you go.
It's not big brother. It's Google and other companies - Orwell was close. It's not the state that will spy (directly at least), it's going to be corporate American.
The state will just buy the information and technically do nothing wrong.
Geeze, it's not rocket science.
Don't like being on call? Quit. In this economy it'll be real easy to replace you - good luck finding another job, though.

One of the lessons learned was don't let communist bureaucracies call the shots for management of nuclear reactors.
Most Linux distributions just can't provide the high level of quality that the FreeBSD project manages to offer.
Wow - your impeccable logic has convinced me! Where do I sign up?
Right here!
So is that 21% of the time is was both correct and incorrect ?
That's correct and the other 79% of the time the cat died.
Unfortunately, the mods didn't get the "Firefly" reference the OP made - Can't stop the signal ... etc..
Ah, pop culture references.
Dude, can I have one of those hot blond robots?
