    Is this really all that interesting? Isn't he probably just saying Explorer isn't the shell in W8? You've been able to set different shells for years haven't you?

    Looking on the page regarding their choice of license you will find the following, rather charming, text.

    "There's no virual [sic] effect as seen with the GPL here."

    I'm not going rehash the whole the-GPL-is-clearly-not-viral explanation here but I won't be looking at this software because people who spout this kind of rubbish aren't the kind of people with which I like to be associated.

    FC2 did not come with Java. Nor did FC1 or any of the previous Redhat distro releases come to think of it. The Java license is not free (as in speech) enough for Redhat to include it.

    I'd say it didn't come with anything "Java related" either but I'm not clear what you mean by this. There's certainly nothing I can think of that I would refer to as "Java related".

    Mac OS X looks great. It's reliable. It probably is great. But much of the reason for this is that the hardware on which it runs, expansion cards and all, is tightly controlled by Apple. This is the same reason that Solaris and AIX are fantastically stable and well appreciated by the people who have the hardware to run them.

    If you want to buy into the whole Mac thing buy a Mac. It's never going to be ported to x86 because it's a crap architecture and everyone knows it.

    And yes, I do have an x86 machine because everything else is too expensive, but I also have enough experience of other architectures (SPARC, Power, MIPS) to know x86 blows big time and if someone offered me a Sun Blade 1000/1500/2000/2500 or similar for a sensible price I'd jump at it.

    This is exactly the same as a car manufacturer saying "we never had an accident caused by this fault until we told people about it".

    Well of course you didn't. The defect still caused accidents but other factors were blamed.

    This disgusts me.

    I'm afraid the BBC is an organisation whose journalistic standards are currently in free-fall.

    Several times I have pointed out factual errors in articles that they have published and never once have I recieved a response. As a resident of the UK I am dissapointed and embarrased by their recent conduct.

    Articles like this just serve to deepen the BBC's current crisis.

    (PS: I believe the Hutton Report was a whitewash but still think the BBC are at fault.)

    This sounds related to a great new feature in Mac OS X Server 10.3/Xserve called "automatic setup" that -- for machines that come with it preinstalled -- will get their address and LDAP server via DHCP and look for configuration files, and automatically configure the entire server, without any interaction beyond plugging it into the network and turning it on.

    Debian is aimed at the guru crowd with only a passing nod to usability where as Fedora is aimed at the desktop user (though perhaps not the everage desktop user).

    People have a habit of forgetting how much RedHat do for the FOSS community. I suggest you look at everything they have given back (Alan Cox, one of the best kernel developers is on their staff just for starters) and quit bitching.

    Because Fedora and Debian have fundamentally different aims. There is nothing to be gained by merging them.

    I have 4 payed for subscriptions to RedHat Network that don't expire until September or October of next year. Don't you think I should be entitled to a bit more compensation for the premature death of a serice I have payed for than "evaluation copies" of RedHat Enterprise Workstation? Oh... And don't say that the service "keeps working for 6 months after April" because if you're not updating the packages it's worthless.

    On a brighter note: good luck with Fedora (looks pretty good to me) and all the enterprise products. RedHat are still the brightest star in the GNU/Linux portfolio of companies and give a lot back to the community. You really get it. And yes, I will be trying WS and ES in the coming months to see if they are worth paying for! :o)

    I don't mean to be rude but, frankly, you sound about as tech savvy as my shoe. This isn't a knee jerk reaction and I'm not rabidly pro GNU/Linux but if you can't use a commercial distribution you're not getting a job in IT with me. (Kids: if you want a job in IT with a future then familiarise yourself with GNU/Linux and/or one of the BSDs.)

    I bet you're an MCSE aren't you?

    Anyway... I think GNU/Linux is very close to being ready for the desktop. My Mum uses it quite happily and I could get my Dad over if it wasn't for a lack of a Microsoft Access like program (suggestions?).

    OK... Hands up those of us who had heard of BitKeeper before it was used for Linux kernel development... Anyone, anyone, anyone... Oh, one of you at the back, well done.

    My point is that successful use for Linux kernel development is just about Bitkeepers only major sucess and, hence, their best form of advertisment.

    There is surely no way any free software project can allow itself to be tied into the kind of trap that McVoy seems to be laying. Ok, I know Linus works _real_ hard but come on: is the loss of freedom that is apparently going to rear its ugly head through BitKeeper usage worth it? Please Linus: time to stop the BitKeeper thing and let them do their own marketing.

    Full marks again to Mr Cox, incidentally.

    A compiler is split into many phases the first of which is lexical analysis. During this phase all white space (spaces, new lines, tabs, etc) is removed as are any comments.

    Comments and spacing in source code have no effect at all on the result of the compilation (the binary (or whatever) produced).

    Care to point one out? Anything in Red Hat 7.3, 8.0 or 9 will do but it must be "glaringly obvious" and "major".

    As someone has already said if the drive quality was increasing they would increase the length of the warranty. This decrease in length of warranty is obviously a sign of decreasing drive quality.

    I guess as the price of hard drives has fallen so much and so have the profit margins that now they feel the need to cut back on quality. Its greed, pure and simple.

    Anyway... Simple solution: I'll never buy an IDE disk from any of these manufacturers ever again and I suggest you don't either. There really is no reason for us to put up with this kind of thing. Just give them the cold shoulder.

    Err... While Bin Laden is a nutter and his followers are too you must accept that America _is_ the reason that many people in the Middle East are suffering.

    Just to give two obvious examples: Uncle Sam insists on proping up a ruthless dictatorship in Saudi Arabia because the West needs their oil and he likes to support the Israeli repression of the Palestinians too (its a vote winner apparently).

    I was as horrified by September the 11th as anyone but come on! These things do happen for a reason. Do something about it.

    Oh... And the hypocracy of the US going on an anti terrorism binge after allowing the IRA (Irish Republican Army) to fundraise on their territory for years probably went over your head too.
