Born in the early 60s. Still listen to vinyl and love vacuum tube amps though I do have an iPod video that I use all the time. I still like to work on old cars. Started surfing in the mid 80s on PCPursuit with a TRS-80 Model 3. I build and maintain my own computers. I'm online all day (laid-off software dev) to keep up with news and politics and use Firefox, Opera and Safari and only power-down the PCs once a week. Have four hobby related blogs and code my own web pages. I don't use Twitter although I can see how invaluable it can be for things like news gathering (read about last night's Cali earthquake as it was happening).
Our ancestors were the original inhabitants of the Red Planet who seeded life here after determining their home world was doomed to destruction (massive asteroid impact is my guess).
Sorry, too much Clarke and Heinlein as a kid I suppose.
Given the Chinese' infamous quality issues (a severe lack thereof) it may be safe to assume these things will start falling apart long before they've paid for themselves.
Might it be a smart move to reverse engineer the components in these turbines and start making our own replace parts for them?
Anyone else notice the irony of Murdoch giving this speech from a communist country that does its damnedest to stifle free speech, restricts access to the internet and controls the press?!?
I've got an IBM era 4019 and a co-branded IBM by Lexmark 4029 (with all the extra trays and envelope feeders) that I picked up state surplus. They'll never win any speed records but both have over 150,000 pages on their odometers and are still going strong.
Of course, they will dim the lights when the fuser lamp kicks in.
My boss was an older chap from the Middle East named Mohammad. He didn't even try to hide the fact that he was a dick. After staff reductions had been announced (we were given advanced notice) he all but disappeared. We never saw him again.
That may have been his laughter I heard in the hall that day.
Finally: Don't be a dick, don't be controversial for no good reason...
Part of my job involved finding coding mistakes made by our overseas contractors. To put it simply, they were sloppy and didn't seem to care. When I left, the quality issue hadn't been resolved...
and they were the ones who wound up getting my job!
The essential implication seems to be that your longevity in employment has absolutely nothing to do with your actual work.
Speaking from previous experience, nothing can save you if your management team believes that the cure for all their department's woes can be found overseas. If slashing the bottom line is their primary concern, I don't think there's anything you can do. Short of moving to Cebu or Bangalore.
diebywire.

Doing seven things at once?!? Not me.
Because if does finally get released, most of those who cared will have died from old age.
That would explain the veil of anonymity you still insist on hiding behind.

Old school geek = still has his trusty tube caddy tucked safely away in his workshop.
Sure, I've still got all my old vinyl - but I record them onto ten and a half inch open reel tape. Pure unadulterated analog, at 15ips.
More like carefully planned.

That [art] quote is actually Marshall McLuhan's.

If they'd of used Christine, the outcome may have been a lot different.
;)
And I'm not saying that cause I own one.

Been there. Seen that.
