  1. Re:Gimp is good enough on GIMP Not Enough for Linux Users? · · Score: 1

My girlfriend has been using Linux and GIMP for professional photography for three years now, with quite some business success.

  2. It happened to me on Is the iPod Generation Going Deaf? · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is very real threat. Headphone induced hearing loss happened to me. And I did not even have flash player or walkman.

When I was 35 I noticed that I often do not understand what people say, especially in noisy environments, while all other people around me understood each other. Medical exam revealed 30% hearing loss. Doctor questioned me about my history and we soon pinpointed it: between 15 and 25 I often listened to music via headphones at top volume for 2 or more hours at a time.

Now doctors recommend that I should wear hearing aid. I wish it did not happen. But such hearin loss cannot be cured at all. It can only get worse.

Doctors told me that if I do not start to wear hearing aid now, my hearing will worsen because the brain will pay less attention to a sense that is degraded, and that a sense of hearing, if not used, will fail as a result. And they pitched expensive hearing aid products.

I got suspicious and asked a friend who happens to be an ORL specialist. He said that these claims are false, aimed at selling the hearing aid products... and that my unassisted hearing would get somewhat worse if I started to wear hearing aid, but I would hear more thanks to the hearing aid. So I decided not to buy the aid. And I found that I can enjoy quiet music just like loud music. And subjectively my hearing improved somewhat.

  3. No instability in contracting on Switching to Contracting? · · Score: 1

I work as a freelancer, and I have to fish for jobs almost every day. Every job I get is 2-16 hours of work. Mostly translating (human languages, not computer languages), some software development as well.

I also happen to have an 18 month old son. When we decided to have a baby the idea that I would quit freelancing was never brought forward. I have no problem at all, my income is just fine, and I save money for my retirement without government assistance, thank you very much.

My girfriend has also been a freelancer (a makeup stylist) for the last 3 years. I supported her during her pregnancy and the first 12 month since the baby was born. We have been living together for 4 years now.

I'm Czech and I was brought up during communist times to work in a factory and to rely on the government for my retirement, not to be a freelancer. I was 21 when the Berlin wall fell. I guess my indoctrination did not work out very well in the end.

I believe that if you, the citizen of the enterprising North America, will find courage to try this, you will be rewarded and that your family will do just fine. But, I may be quite wrong :-)

  4. Re:Start up time? on OpenOffice.org Hits 1.1 · · Score: 1

Startup time is about 4 times shorter in OO 1.1 than it was in OO 1.0.

It takes 10 seconds to start OO 1.1 on Linux on my poor Celeron 400MHz. Subsequent starts take about 5 seconds maximum.

Word97 takes 2 seconds to start on the same machine in Windows 98.

The lady who rejected OO 1.1 based on slow startup time was biased, or she only runs Office for 3-5 minutes at a time and therefore startup is absolutely crucial for her. Most people work in Office software for at least an hour at a time.

  5. This happened to my spouse's relative on Flaming Cellphones · · Score: 1

This story is probably true. The same thing happened to my spouse's relative. It was a Nokia, and the batteries were some cheap kind, wildly marketed here in Czech republic. The burns were minor but definitely required medical care. The shock was, of course immense.

  6. Re:Showstopper #1820 still open. on OpenOffice 1.1 RC 1 Released · · Score: 1

This bug is a keyboard layout issue. For instance Czech and Norway keyboard layouts generate comma when you press numpad dot.

This has nothing to do with OpenOffice.org.

Mironet has a whole range of quiet cases. You can choose between three levels of "quietness", and the top model (available for $230) is totally silent.
