  1. Re:My experience with the GIMP on The Book of GIMP · · Score: 4, Insightful

As someone who embraces copyleft and is a strong supporter of free software GIMP isn't a replacement for photoshop yet. The roadmap for GIMP should make it possible after 2.10 or 3.0 Here's what I need to switch: Unified transform tool so I can scale, rotate, shear, etc all with one tool (currently available in 2.9 dev) On Canvas Preview so I can see what something looks like without having to commit and undo a change over and over again. 16/32 Color Bit Depth (CMYK would be good but not required). This is already in GIMP, but not supported by everything. After GEGL is fully integrated this will be great. Layer Masks and other nondestructive editing. Massively speeds up productivity and prototyping. I'd really like an improvement to layers in GIMP. Right now you can't select multiple layers and move them up and down. Layer groups makes it tolerable, but it's still slower than photoshop. On top of that the UI of GIMP is big and ugly. The menus are in akward places with way too much white space and padding taking up a good chunk of the screen. Some of this can be fixed with icon packs, customized panels, and a new theme, but it's always going to be a little oversized and awkward. Photoshop's menu organization is just about perfect; might as well copy it.

Trying to make money from something that isn't scarce is silly. Charge for the scarce goods not the stuff you can easily copy. The very first copy is scarce. Support is scarce. Commissioning people with talent is scarce.

No he didn't. He said expressing a conservative opinion was hard. There are plenty of free market capitalist democrats, moderates, and "independents". Even a good chunk of liberals don't agree with anti-capitalistic ideas.

I think modern technology should be integrated with learning. I don't think of it as a crutch just like an abacus isn't or a calculator isn't. It's a tool that previous generations invented for the betterment of society and we should use them.

The same problem applies when you decide to buy a movie ticket or dvd. You don't know how good the movie is but you've already paid.

  8. Re:The long copyright period . . . on How Watchmen Killed 'R'-rated Fantasy Movies · · Score: 1

You posted what I wanted to post. I'd also add that the studios making sequel after sequel is part of the copyright problem. Since making a brand new idea that isn't derivative of anything is so difficult the studios are left with the option of making derivatives of what they do own. Rights for every property are a tangled mess so even getting something like Alien VS Predator made is a giant hassle. Our culture is tied up and everyone (including corporations) is struggling to innovate with all the bureaucracy.

What's the podcast website? I'm heavy into boardgame design. If you don't feel like posting the website here for whatever reason you can reach me at gmail or boardgamegeek with the same name (I'm the only MusedFable as far as I know). Gamers seem to be very willing to put money up for projects; which is probably why Kickstarter can work so well for game makers.
