Indeed, it is quite old; at a book signing/reading in Hicksville, NY over a year ago (For _American Gods_), I distinctly remember Neil discussing plans for the movie to be directed by Terry GIlliam.
Really, when it comes down to it, stuffed animals are cute and fun...but they are not very useful. I have more than enough stuffed animals that just gather dust. A really thoughtful and useful birthday or Valentine's day present would be a bear with an ethernet switch inside of it, especially considering the time put into it.
That's right. I *give* backrubs to relieve my back pain. Because when I give my friend's backrubs, they are happy friends who give me backrubs back. The moral of the story? Learn to give good backrubs.:D
I think that different people have different needs/usages for the internet depending on their situations. Personally, I am a high school student with a group of friends spread all over the east coast (and some scattered elsewhere). We form an online community through mailing lists, chats, and instant messages. We use the internet as a tool to create the community we are unable to do in person -- and we fully abandon it when _are_ able to meet in person. It's just another tool, like the telephone, and good for those of us who have friends elsewhere and can't afford very large long distance phone bills.

I would call it more of a "Boy Who Cried Wolf" story on the part of the Russians. When they really -are- going to drop Mir, no one will believe them.
