PDF is the way to diistribute documents online. Complex Formatting with HTML is a pain in the ass. Load an HTML page in five similarly-cofigured but slighty different computers and you'll get five different looking files. Heck, it's what the inventors of HTML envisioned--the viewers has control of the content, not the publisher.
PDF maintains consistent formatting, and it's free, so stop whining about "Proprietary" software just because Adobe won;t give you the source code.
It should be noted that Corel is dying because of Michael Cowpland's failed leadership. Let's look back a few years. Corel was a niche company that focused on DTP software. Although its DTP software was well-liked by many, Corel's rank in the DTP would was well below that of the industry leader, Adobe. CorelDraw was riddled with bug and was well-known as being crash-happy.
Fast forward a few years when Cowpland decided to take on Microsoft by purchasing WordPerfect from Novell. Bad move. One thing that everybody learned (except Cowpland) is that you don't win when you fight Microsoft on their terms. Hence, the success of Linux, which offers such a completely foreign distribution and support model that Microsoft can't fight it directly; only indirectly through FUD, which doesn't seem to be working (Halloween memo, anybody?)
The result of Cowpland's leadership: Corel begins hemorrhaging money in a vain effort to beat Microsoft at it's own game. It has to fight really hard to get OEM to bundle WordPerfect Suite in new systems. Few buy it. Other than WordPerfect, the Suite as a whole is a weak competitor to Office.
Then, in a desperate attempt to save face, Cowpland embraces Linux, which fails to stop the hemorrhaging. Result: Corel will be lucky to make it another year. They'll probably end up selling Draw to a competitor and WordPerfect to god knows who (IBM?).
Conclusion: Be wary of Cowpland entering the Linux world. He's to set in his ways to make a difference in the Linux community.
THOSE BASTARDS! VIDEO GAMES DO NOT MAKE PEOPLE MORE VIOLENT. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? I'LL SHOVE A HAND GRENADE UP THEIR ASSESS, I WILL. SOME NERVE, TELLING ME I'M MORE VIOLENT JUST BECAUSE I PLAY QUAKE III 6 HOURS A DAY. WHERE'S MY MACHINE GUN?
Can someone explain to me why I would want to purchase a piece of proprietary Linux software?
Lets get one thing straight: Linux will go nowhere, and I mean nowhere, if people can't profit from it. Sitting there expecting "I'll get everything for free, and everything will be all right" is one click short of delusional, and if we're not careful, this whole open source movement will rot to the core before we even knew what hit us.
Voice recognition does work if you Read The Fine Manual! I am a technical writer and use Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred USB 4.0 on a Windows 98 Pentium III with 128 MB. The only mistakes it makes are my own speaking mistakes.
If it really worked, you wouldn't HAVE to read the Fine manual. Instructions = talk into microphone! Fact is: It works the more you use it (therefore it can adapt to your voice) but the early going is too rough for most.
Right now, voice recognition just plain plain sucks. Learn how to use a DVORAK keyboard and you'll be far better off. And, you won't need a Coppermine with 512MB RAM!!!
Think different" is probably correct in American english.
Wrong. "Think Different" is Steve Jobs English. He thought "Think Differently" sounded weird.
