That's probably what got the woman in the picture of 'only person to be directly hit by a meteor'.
What I don't get is the jump from: 1000 people were injured in Russia two years ago, to: because only one person was ever directly hit by a meteor therefore strikes should be of no practical concern.
A detection system for the size of meteor that can injur 1000 might yeild all kinds of interesting side discoveries and technologies beyond just being a detection system.
I worked at a Byte Shop in 1978-9 as their repair department
I remember belittling an Apple owner back then because he paid $50 to have a technician just like you re-seat a ram chip that had come loose after he moved. Otherwise to break the sticker and do it himself would mean no authorized dealer would be allowed to work on it for real repairs.
Yes, it's called a "Dude Ranch". Get some city slickers to pay the ranch to be allowed to drive the cattle. Most brilliant hiring strategy in all human history.
They should learn not to keep all their "investments" in options and other derivatives. Then be amazed when the market reverses and wipes them out. That's called "gambling". Derivatives should only make up a small portion of your portfolio as a hedge and then only when you really know what you're doing. I had a couple of uncles who had millions in call options in early '99 who blasted me for being a fool for telling them to get out. A year later they were singing the "but nobody saw it coming!" song.
that quote is a myth; the guy actually said more along the lines of so many new things have been invented that he wouldn't be surprised if there were less new inventions in the future. which is a far cry from saying nothing new would be invented.
Think about it, the total energy of all the shock and sonic boom is equal to amount of jet fuel burnt
Well duh, ANY engine noise is "energy wasted on shaking the air" as any engineer can tell you. A 787 is nice and quiet compared to other airliners but it's still burning fuel to shake some air. It is a legit question to ask if it is *economical* to shake the air at the sonic boom level.
they chose to make issuing paper money illegal - "No State shall... make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts;..."
the key word being "State". Whenever reading the Constitution, pay attention to whether it specifies "Congress" or "States". The item you've quoted specifies States may not, meaning the Congress may. Other items specify Congress may not, meaning States may. The terms "Congress" and "States" are not just interchangable, generic terms for "government" in the Constitution.
Translation: We can't afford (read: won't pay) for real security personnel
In all fairness, United is a huge company and like any huge company has tremendous inertia. Probably it's nearly impossible to get IT security bugs properly identified and fixed even if the CEO came to daily scrum meetings. A bounty for external parties is at least a realization they have this problem.
Why have online voting? Really, voting in person means people who are interested enough bestir themselves to do so. And if they are interested enough to go vote, presumably they at least know the candidates' names ahead of time and hopefully something of the issues. Until you can guarantee there are no ultra-low information voters then universal turnout is not good. Otherwise might as well turn voting over to Mechanical Turk.
Hint: the moon is beyond geosync distance but somehow it manages to stay in orbit
In the long term this is incorrect. The moon's orbit is not permanent. Since the original question is what devices will keep working without humans present then the correct answer is likely satellites, but those are not forever.
If you hit the wall in an Indy Car and don't take your hands off the wheel, you'll break your wrists.
They could use a drive-by-wire whose force feedback isn't strong enough to break a wrist. Wouldn't the car be safer without a steering wheel aimed at the driver's chest? F16's use a joystick on the side; a racecar could do the same.
Relying on the carrier for updates is truly the worst thing about Android - then there's the premium-seeking apps compiled into the base rom that generate evil warnings of how the system may become unstable if they're uninstalled. WTF does my phone need with NFL whatever baked in and threatening to become unstable if I dare disable it?? At least with some OEM Windows computer this kind of crap can be uninstalled. I wouldn't mind them putting in default apps to try to upsell service if I could remove them. And then there's carrier hardware support decisions baked into the rom. A Galaxy Note 2's radio chip isn't accessible when sold by Verizon because their rom has that disabled. They want you to use your data plan to stream radio; they don't even provide a streaming radio app but they want to at least try to get you to pay for more data allowance.

Take the pictures down; repost them all the day that the diploma is received.
Heck, use a smartphone to trigger that posting from the graduation ceremony
It must have been the first Mac then. Hey, it's been a few years.

Debunked what? There's a minimum wage below zero?

WTF Supermans per second? It specifies Marvell right there in the title.
The summary makes no mention of the author's gender.
RTFA: "Katherine Murphy, 17"
which was eventually adopted by JEDEC 2013
I hope the organizers were careful not to invite any patent trolls to that round.
A railgun projectile that travels slow enough that the target can evade before the projectile reaches it? Meh.
Shotgun railguns!!!
So you are going to cover every surface of every target with a mirror? Let me know how that goes for you.
Well at least that way there won't be any trouble tracking it.
What else do you want people to "learn" from it?

Would you prefer he go off the deep end into scientology like the actress who does bart's voice?

"Mother, stay out of this."
Except his mom was married to a cuckold named joseph while she was knocked up with another guy's baby.
So..., you're saying that all the Old Testament crap is right out the window? Cool. Please tell all your fellow "Christians"
Ever notice that to most christians a 1,000 page bible is 900 pages of unread filler around the 100 pages about yeshua?

I know someone who beats all the rest of you: my mother's bff still uses her Amana Radarange she got in 1969.
My favorite structure on Mars is the giant clockwork thing in Watchmen. But I guess that doesn't quite meet the breathable air requirement.

They'd have to be hellatough to have a nuclear war lasting two years.
