    There was a time you could walk without a ticket up to the gate at an airport and meet your loved ones when they arrived.

    Are you saying that this is some sort of terrible hardship? Your loved ones have travelled thousands of miles to see you, whats a few more feet? I'm actually happier with no salesmen and no hari krishnas in the waiting room.

    On my end i was thinking about something that would eat through the metal, thermite maybe, although i think its ignition is kinda hard?

    liquid metal would complete the circuit and set off the explosive

    Couldn't they use a drill made of non-conductive material to drill into the case?

    you didn't RTFA closely enough, the agents considered this but chips from the drilling process would have completed the circuit regardless of the drill's conductiveness.

    Good engineering is always interesting. The same technology could be used to create a server system that self-destructs if you try to open it.

    You have specific evidence that he was singled out because of his race?

    My anecdotal evidence is that I did pretty much the same thing at the same age and nobody ever accused me of doing anything wrong.

    I bought a clock kit from an ad in the back of popular electronics and put it in a radio shack case. I duct-taped the battery to the bottom. If anything my clock looked a lot more like a bomb than his did.

    The bomber was not interested in killing people, he wanted to destroy the casino. A grenade is not going to cause serious physical damage to the casino.

    did you bother to RTFA? The bomber stole the explosives from construction sites. If you only steal a little at a time they won't even notice that some are missing.

    China just copies what's done in the West.

    They didn't copy the part where they massively reduced their manufacturing costs, they figured that part out on their own.

    If you're in Shenzen you can take a walk and pick up all the components you need for your prototype project in the morning and assemble them in the afternoon.

    Here in the US we have to order the components from china and it takes weeks to months.

    The F35 isn't a money pit. It's a good investment.

    "good" is relative, It doesn't mean "best". A more prudent investment would be one in our own infrastructure. With a trillion dollars we could have a "big dig" type infrastructure improvement in every american city.

    The big dig cost 24.3 billion dollars. We could have used that money to refurbish a heck of a lot of our run down urban infrastructure?

    When you spend money on defense you also have to determine the value of the assets you are protecting. If you reduce their value to zero through neglect then you don't have anything to defend.

    This sounds like a highly dysfunctional environment

    Mechanical-type people are usually pretty horrified by the short lifespans of computers. They are used to dealing with things like turret lathes and drill presses that can handle 50 years of continuous use. It could be a perfectly natural reaction.

    if the stuff is really as old as he says it is, they must already be experiencing some hardware failures. it's not too hard to convince a money guy that a dead computer means no revenue.

    I would say to bring in a couple of new systems first right away. Their eventual use will be testing. Use them to train the staff and test the new applications and determine capacity. THEN you can whip out the budget spreadsheet.
