    People talk about problems with android, and yet these problems are precisely where companies like RIM can differentiate themselves, by solving these problems.

    So did RIM, they could have filled that market nicely with, as you say, no competition.

    Wow you just described a great new business opportunity that RIM could have taken advantage of, if they had chosen android

    just think of how many nice little android keyboard devices they could have sold with the market all to themselves.

    do you mean to say that?

    there are NO exceptions?

    The nice thing about android is that you don't have to get googles permission to use it in whatever form factor you want. With Apple you are stuck with their form factor and with Microsoft you have to meet their requirements.

    that's exactly the point

    with android you don't have to take the whole stack of software

    it's all GPL so you can use as much or as little of it as you want

    you can make an e-ink reader or a refrigerator screen or a 787 seatback computer or a phone or whatever you want with android

    quality isn't free

    cross-platform means you can make more customers happy

    between higher quality and more customers and future-proofing, cross-platform is clearly worth the extra costs

    This will eventually cause a huge bottleneck once games starts making use of multiple cores..

    You're aware that adding thread safety SLOWS DOWN software and makes it LESS EFFICIENT, right???

    The place to ensure thread safety is in the application, which is perfectly capable of scheduling updates to non-threaded code, much more efficiently!

    so you are saying I am right, there were no devices on the market

    today we use virtual machines for developing operating systems, you don't need hardware for application development.

    so you see, lack of hardware doesn't have to slow down development of a new platform

    the real question is are they doing anything which would warrant hope that tomorrows pad's will ship with gpu's with non-proprietary drivers?.

    You are putting the cart before the horse. It's pointless to start targeting hardware before any vendors make commitments to hardware.

    There's no point in developing drivers for a framework if you don't have a stable and solid framework in the first place.

    Having a solid framework is how you sell the vendors on the software, THEN you can start talking about hardware and drivers.

    When android development was started, there weren't ANY devices available that would run it.

    the issue is how much does it cost facebook to change the name of the company in their database. If they say it costs them thousands of dollars to update a database entry do you believe them? What does it cost you to change an entry in your addressbook? Even if you are a highly paid trial lawyer on hourly rates it will only cost you a couple of dollars.
