  1. Leverage the community on Mozilla Calls CISPA an "Alarming" Threat to Privacy · · Score: 1

We need to get people fired up. Once people are sufficiently abuzz about this issue, the corporations will take notice. Question the tech companies about their stance on this bill. If they won't divulge their involvement one way or the other, assume they're pro CISPA and blast them for it. If congress will only listen to corporations, then make sure corporations are on our side. Make sure they know that if they aren't with us, they're against us. Make sure they know we hold them accountable and there will be backlash. All the while, keep nipping at your congressman's heals. I personally had a debate on Facebook with my representative, and now we're scheduling a personal meeting so I can voice the concerns *we* all share. Understand that your congressman probably thinks he's protecting us from foreign super-hackers, rather than handing us over to corrupt corporations and greedy law enforcement agencies. Give them alternatives. We see all too well that they don't know jack shit about the Internet, so educate them. Tell them how we go about recognizing and preventing attacks. Tell them about the challenges we, the community, face. Tell them what could be done to help us work better. Explain to them how things work, and teach them why CISPA won't. Don't just yell, "Guvment stealing my tubes" at the top of your lungs, or you'll quickly be tuned out. Be intelligible and treat it for what it is: teaching some old dude how the Internet works. If after all the politeness and slow-talking they still refuse to listen to reason, then they are stupid or corrupt and should be exposed as such. Write about your experience. Spread your findings far and wide. Make sure they understand just who the fuck they're fucking with. We are the Internet. We are the largest community the world has ever seen. If you threaten us; fear our retaliation, for it will be great.

Here's a scenario: what if the malware had just set their DNS to loopback or something stupid like that. They would have immediately lost internet and had to fix it or call someone who could. They'll be in the exact same boat when these rogue servers get shut down. So what's different about this situation? This time the government is in a position to help. Like I said, I'm fine with that. Redirect to a landing page explaining the problem. Leave it up for a couple weeks to make sure everyone gets the message, then pull the plug. Frankly, that's more help than they deserve. These people got infected, and as a consequence they lose internet until they resolve the problem. They can figure it out themselves, ask their tech friend for help, or shell out the money to have a pro look at it. The point is, it's THEIR problem. We don't need a government agency wasting time and effort holding these people's hands. If you're gonna take a shit, learn to wipe your own ass or be prepared to pay royally for someone else to wipe for you.

I've had a BD player and an HDTV for a couple years now, and I own exactly zero Blu-ray movies. I've rented maybe 2 Blu-rays from redbox, and that's just because they were action flicks that deserved to be seen in the highest quality possible. The combination of high prices and crappy movies has kept me from buying. I do steam plenty of content, but I'd prefer to "own" any movies I truly enjoyed. I realize I'm missing out on quality when streaming or netflixing DVDs, but I rarely care. The only movies I really care to see in HD are action or otherwise very visual movies, so most of the time the added cost returns almost no benefit. I don't need to see every pore on my favorite actress's face in some drama flick. If I wanted to see people talking in HD, I'd get a girlfriend. I've found that standard def doesn't bother me at all if I just take off my glasses.

  15. seems legit on Marketing Agency Uses Homeless As Wi-Fi Hotspots · · Score: 4, Insightful

I think it's perfectly reasonable. This could be a great service in larger cities and especially during events like sxsw. Have a place at the homeless shelter that maintains the equipment and keeps it charged. The homeless person just checks out a fanny pack with the equipment and gets paid upon returning it. In the meantime they go about their daily lives, except now they have a t-shirt and a gimmick. I would eliminate the cash donation part in favor of a premium text charge or being redirected to a donation page upon connecting. You could even serve up ads if that model works better for you. Apart from preventing a rash of homeless muggings, taking cash out of the equation helps eliminate any confusion over who you're giving the money to (Am I giving this homeless dude money or paying for WiFi? Feel free to give the dude a dollar if you would normally). However you do it, the donations go back to funding the program (maintaining equipment, paying the homeless), and anything left over goes to the shelter. Odds of this being profitable would be greatly improved with any advances to make the equipment cheaper and more durable. People get Wifi, a homless dude makes a little money to get by, shelters gets donations, advertisers get to slap a label on it. Everybody sounds happy to me.

  16. Default Gateway on Ask Slashdot: What Is an Acceptable Broadband Latency? · · Score: 1

Who cares about their test servers, what's the latency to your DG. If that's low then it's not a problem with your modem, it's hops within their network. Try finding an IP in your closest major city and run a trace to it. You'll be able to see where traffic is bottlenecked. Also, check the latency to your DNS. That can make a huge difference in surfing experience. I've seen some bag legs (like out in the country) that consistently test at or around 100ms. Anything more than that and I'd bitch. Voip starts getting choppy, games lag, etc.

Short of that, if it's a good that depends on a service to function, and it's infringement to recreate that service on your own, then which are you really paying for; the good or the service? I'd say it's a bundle. If each is useless without the other, then what's the point. Sure, I have WoW installed on my computer, but I can't do jack without signing up for the service (rogue servers aside). What about a game without a subscription? Congrats, you bought the good and got the service for free. What about FTP games? Congratulations, you bought the service and got the goods for free.

Well no derp. What were you expecting? We're talking about items that have no value outside of the game. If the game dies, so do the items. I completely understand what the gamers are going through; it sucks. I myself have spent way too much time/money acquiring virtual goods on various free-to-play MMOs and such. If the day comes that the game goes bust, I fully intend to lose all those items. WTF does it matter how many stacks of Hero Potions I've squirreled away if there's no game-world to consume them in? Some people have tried to draw parallels to cloud storage, but that's comparing apples to virtual apples. That media is something you consume in real life. Besides, in that case you shouldn't put all your eggs in one cloud. It's fine for backup or accessing your files remotely, but you'd be dumb to rely on it completely. If Sony is truly calling this game a bust, it would be nice of them to pass it off to the community. If someone really cares enough to invest in a server and bandwidth to keep it going, then let them. Let's not kid ourselves though, Sony's not nice.
