  1. OS X office on Under the Hood of Office 12 · · Score: 1

It's not really non-intuitive. Powerpoint on OSX has something similar, but on the right. This is definitely the best thing I've ever seen in an application like this. The most frustrating thing was moving back to Office 2000 at work.

If they took their OS X style and moved it back to Windows, that would be spectacular.

Disclaimer-I haven't used XP, maybe it's the same and this is what you mean by menus.

  2. Windows security on NYT Reports Porn Spam Hijacking Network · · Score: 1

At work I use a PC running Windows (2000 and now XP). I am not the systems administrator, or anything near, so we tried to get by without me having administrator priveleges. As a result, the programs I was trying to use to do my job did not run properly. That is among the reasons people log in as administrator all the time.

  3. Don't box yourself in. on The Ordinary Slashdot User Answers · · Score: 1

You don't need to be the same as everyone else in a group.
You don't need to be stereotypical, or 'average'.

Slashdot is not a family, or a close-knit group. Check the number of people using it - in the hundred-thousands. You can hardly stand out in such a big group.

My advice for you, would be to work at the friendship with those two people at your school, play with your computer and see what you can get out of it. Indulge your interests, above all.

Let me also tell you where I'm coming from:
I'm a high school junior. I have never used Linux. I read slashdot regularly, but I'm not looking at it to identify myself. I have some skill in programming, but I only picked it up through a class in 9th grade. I like computers, but also hanging with friends. I've made online-friendships through an RPG online.
As far as popular people, I dislike the way they treat each other, but personally, I tolerate them. I play the clarinet, listen to Beach Boys and israeli music, and helped a friend land a job in web design.
    That's where I come from.
As you can see, I'm not average. I don't identify with any particular group.

"To thine own self be true" - Shakespeare put it well.
    Hang in there.

  4. Volcanoes on Io Has Geysers, Lakes And Snow · · Score: 1

I'm not sure how productive it would be to investigate IO.

Aren't there an awful lot of problems right here on Earth?

I guess it could be made into a penal colony. "You are sentenced to live with more Volcanos erupting at one time than the sum total of all the eruptions of the last 10 or more years, depending on whether it's a busy day or not"

If there's life, that's great, but can't it be left alone? Granted, it probably won't turn into something major, what with Jupiter pulling at it all the time. Call me an idealist, but our little Earth needs some attention before we go poking around all the heavenly bodies. Otherwise there will be nothing left to fall back on.

  5. Egos on .god Domain Names: Another "Pioneer" Registrar · · Score: 2

    Egos, that's what this is.

Somebody wants to be the god of their own little world, and have everybody know. What other reason is there for such a label?

.com, .org, .edu- those are all descriptive names for commercial enterprises, non-commercial organizations, and education stuff. But .god? What, you own that domain name, and have supreme power over it? Yay for you.

yeah, it's funny, in a way. It's also very disrespectful and presumtuous. It seems to mock the other names, and anybody who dares believe in higher powers.

I'm not going to say 'No, there should be no .god type domain names' There should be freedom, after all. However, I think it would have been better not to come out with .god. THere are so many other combinations of letters, that would be more meaningful.

I hope I've done the HTML right. :-P

  6. Different Registrars on Ranking The Domain Name Registrars · · Score: 2

How do the different registrars keep from leasing or selling the same name to different people?

What if Bob tried to register nameofsomething.com on Friday through register.com and Christina tried to register nameofsomething.com the same day through another registrar? Which does it go to. And what prevents the registrars from double registering domain names? Is there a central power that assigns them all?

EV is one of my favorite games, also Escape Velocity Override.

If terminus is really a 3-D EV, I think I'd better get linux or windows and play.

    uEVO-RPG: www.oxy-soft.com/uevo

EV, you keep going after you stop pressing thrust. Unfortunately, it is only 2-D, not realistic.
