  1. Re:Well... on Some iPod Fans Dump PCs For Macs · · Score: 1

IMHO, the tipping point for the Mac to be more useful than command line interfaces did not happen until System 7.1 and the 68030 Macintoshes came out which would have been high end Mac hardware in 1993

The SE/30 was not "high-end" for 1993. It was introduced in January 89, and discontinued in October 90. System 7.1 didn't add many features over 7.0 (can you name any?), so it sooks like your tipping point was closer to May 90 (when 7.0 was released).

He's from New Zealand, so I'm going to guess he's near the ocean. Does he store the PB in a room where the window is habitually open? If so, the salt air may be corroding out the parts as they are replaced.

My father had this exact problem: he lives a quarter-mile from the sea, and sleeps with the window open. Any computer stored in his room suffers sequential componant failures. None of the computers in closed rooms (basement) have had any problems.

The solution could be to store the powerbook in an airtight drawer, or close the window.

  4. Quicktime Player Full-Screen Bug on Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.1.3 · · Score: 1

Here's a serious QuickTime bug that was introduced by 10.1.3.

I use QuickTime Player in full-screen mode to view movies. Under 10.1.2 (and before) it did this in whatever resolution my screen was set to.

With 10.1.3 it tries to reset my screen to some non-standard resolution, which causes my monitor to squeeze the image into the right 2/3rds of the screen.

Does anyone know how to disable monitor resolution-changing with QuickTime Player full-screen playback?

  5. An off-the-shelf solution? on Water-Cooling Kits as Temp. Control for Photography? · · Score: 2

Darkroom supply companies have sold just such refrigeration systems, known as "water chillers," for years. A professional model might cost you $700, but there is an article on page 38 of the December 1998 issue of Shutterbug magazine (sorry, not online) that describes how to build your own water-chiller quite cheaply. I suggest a trip to the local library.
