    Yep. And it a good idea, but it *not* perpetual motion. what I found amusing was the assertion that it would run perpetually without any additional energy input.. i.e. charge it up once and the generators would forever charge the batteries after that.

    This reminds me of a guy I knew that wanted to build an electric car with genrators running off all the wheels.. He figured that would let his car run forever for free. ..This must have been before the discovery of friction.

    What? .. My automatic reaction to a pop-up is to close it. To me thats a pretty effective way to ignore them, not to mention that I usually won't return to a site with pop-ups if I can help it..

    Yeah.. And Katz assumes that there is a finite source of 'small media' web zines etc, and that all 'Big media' has to do is buy them up.. Seems to me that the great thing about the Web is that anyone with a connection and an Idea can put something up..

    So 'Big Media' is bigger. So what? It's always been that way, and it always will be. And there will also always be those of us that look for something a bit different than what 'Big Media' is offering.

    Do you have those camera installed in the bathrooms as well?

    It seems to me that my employer pays me for what I do not how I do it. I occasionaly take work home, and you know what? I also occasionaly take my personal interests to work. If I'm not doing the job I was hired to do, well, fire me. No need to spy on me.

    I dunno.. I'm not sure any site with advertising is "free". There are different ways to pay for things, and one of them is to fill your eyeballs with banner-ads. Not that I disagree with your point, I think that if anything, this asks the question - Why would you pay for someone else to 'hold onto' your data, and lose that much control?

    ..For those of us that already have a PC, you can get a hundred dollar TV tuner card and software like snapstream and do the same thing. Not only that, but if you feel like it, you can set your recording schedule online through that service. I havent tried it yet with my old ATI tv card, but it looks pretty cool, and the limited version is free (as in beer).

These licenses are described as viral because they "infect" derivative programs. Viral licenses vary in how infectious they are, depending on how they define which programs are derivative works.

    Good lord! I had no idea running open source software was so dangerous! I mean, what with the liberal news media and their anti-microsoft slant you'd think it was good american programs like, oh, say.. Outlook that had 'viral' problems.. VBS must be open source.

    .. Sorry, no my tan is a CRT tan. Though similar, there are differences - for your reference here are the main types of Geek Tans (in no particular order)
    1. CRT= Computer Reductive Tan
      -A negative tan, that is to say that the melanin levels in the skin are actualy depleted by lack of exposure to natural light.

      RGB= Rotten Grey Bubbly Tan
      -One step beyond a CRT tan, the depleted melanin has been replace by lead, mercury and other heavy metals off-gasing from computer hardware. This condition is only possible on a diet of cheezies and Jolt.

      LCD= Liquid Caffeine Discharge Tan
      -This tan is caused by a combination lack of light and lack of sleep. Caffeine levels in the skin cause a visible sizzling when exposed to sunlight. -aka the 'road-warriors tan'.

      EMF= Electric Mind-funk Tan
      -A temporary condition caused by a combination of the above tans & High levels of Electro-Magnetic radiation (Quake III on an overclocked AMD box)-The surface of the brain darkens and causes the subject to believe that they R001 the W0r1d. Woot woot.

    .. Regardless of the merits of a courtday protest, if you want to be there, you should go at 10:00 am, not on your lunch break. Unlike the court dates before, this one consists of a 20 minute argument from the 2600 side, and a 30 minute argument from the other side - It'll be over quick.

    The 'other side' gets more time because there are two of them - MPAA gets 20 minutes, US government gets 10 minutes.

    ..Not to mention that as the databases grow and merge we're dealing with a fairly complete profile of what you like, what forms of advertising you'll respond to, where you go on vacation, how much you make, etc. etc.. Sounds a bit like me like we're headed towards the ideal consumer set into feed troughs and kept fat and slow.

    And then there's identity theft - So count me out - I try to add a bit to a database every day. Anita Prawduct, Don T. Botherme, Joe Shopper, etc. etc. etc. Let them track and market to the figments of my imagination!

    As far as a convergence device goes, my PC works great, and I'm in control of the individual components thank you very much.

    I use Belkin KVM Switches at home and at work. I'd love to have other connectors availiable as well in one box (audio, Firewire, USB, etc), but for now Its nice just having access to four boxes from one workstation setup.

    Ah! but when they were developing it, they most likely were impressed with linux for a few reasons-
    1. -Golly that Linux stock sure is rocketing up.. it must be the next big thing.
    1. -You mean it's free? As in free beer? No licensing costs? *rubs hands in glee* ..We'll be rich, RICH I Say! Mua ha ha..
    I assume this because I worked with someone who called me up when 'Linux' meant 'big ol' IPO' and asked me if I knew anything about it.. turns out they had a penny stock mining company and they wanted to jump on the bandwagon and get the stock up.. -They were going to do 'Linux Training'.. funny thing is that by the time they had done up their news releases the market had begun to slide..

    Whats astounding is how this happens over and over again, and yet marketbots will still look at an unfinished product, stop development while drooling over profits and release a product into the marketplace that no one will buy.

    I wonder if people's expectations have been steadily dropping, and they no longer actually expect technology to work when they buy it.. Perhaps thats what they are bettting on -As long as it has nice packaging, lets not worry about those little functionality issues..
