    That doesn't mean there's a 5% chance of an earth hit. In 3-D, from a graph like that, I'd estimate 0.02% or so.

    The odds are much less than 0.02%.

    JPL's 2004 MN4 impact risk page doesn't even list the 2029 flyby, while listing a couple of 0.0000061% chance impacts.

    Visible to the naked eye... but still a 2% chance of it being rather too visible?

    No.

    The odds of the potential 2029 impact occurring have dropped so close to zero that the event is no longer even considered a long-shot possibility.

    Dude, if _any_ sci-fi universe's computers run on Mac OS X, it's Star Trek. Yeesh.

    If Star Trek's computers ran Mac OS X, you wouldn't be able to compromise the security systems by tapping on a keyboard for 15 seconds. They are obviously running Windows XP.

    Yeah, right. Legal status is irrelevant to an entity that exists only by law. Wonderful logic there.

    If Massachusetts isn't a state, then legally it cannot have congressional representation and all the other things the US Constitution that are granted to states.

    The people of Massachusetts can say "we're not a state, we're the land of magical radishes" for all I care. That doesn't make them not a state.

    Is this Holiday Wars you make mention of a legitimate storyline? If so, where is it available? Or is this comment a result of an inability to detect sarcasm?

    The original poster was referring to the webcomic Sluggy Freelance. The comic features a homicidal rabbit named Bun-bun who, among other things, has had a longstanding feud with Santa Claus. Claus spent about three weeks dead during a storyline from about a year ago.

    It is a Commonwealth. There are 46 States and 4 Commonwealths.

    No. There are 50 states, 4 of which call themselves commonwealths. There are also two Federally recognized commonwealths, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. The use of "commonwealth" by Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia carries no legal meaning.

    All the holiday avatars got reset at the end of the Holiday Wars storyline. Santa's alive and tossed Bun-bun into a timeless void where he was missing and presumed dead until a few days ago.

    Actually Southwestern Bell bought two peers, Pacific Telesys (PacTel) and Ameritech.

    SBC (formerly an abbreviation for Southwestern Bell Corporation) bought Pacific Bell (Pacbell), the larger company that PacTel was a part of.

    But by having hundreds of billions. the 800 million in donations are just a drop in the bucket. thats less then 1 percent. That is like me donation $100 to charity.

    Bill Gates's net worth is currently estimated to be around $30 billion. This single donation is about 2.5% of his net worth.

    I never said there was no record. It's hard to destroy all records of a hurricane hitting a large city, what with there being newspapers and a whole lot of people being affected.

    Declare the weather a matter of national security, and order that it be classified as sensitive material immediately.

    They did that with a hurricane in 1943, actually. It blew through Houston and shut down the refineries producing aviation fuel. After the storm passed nearly all weather records related to it were destroyed.

    His screenshot was identically formatted to these.

    Given its location and elevation (4' average, 22' maximum, according to the article), it's somewhat surprising that they didn't get washed away.

    If you look at the wave animations for the tsunami, you'll see that most of it got directed almost due west toward Sri Lanka and eastern India. Diego Garcia is well out of the way of the main wave.

    That's just the way our species handles things... Tacoma Narrows bridge. Safety glass in automobiles. Building codes. Galveston seawall. The list goes on and on.

    The really terrible thing about the Galveston seawall is that a large minority of the residents wanted one. It was in large part because the local Weather Bureau forecaster (Isaac Cline) said it could never happen that it didn't get built.

    All I'm saying is that this asteroid isn't really moving much relatively. It;s still going in a rather straight (err.. elliptical) path. Why is some rocket scientist needing to revise his numbers over and over? I would think that we could be somewhat accurate right off the bat. I mean, this adjustment has been an entire order of magnitude.

    This rock's moving 16ish billion miles over the next 24 years. In order to predict if it hits, they need to be accurate to a few thousand miles. Give them a little time to sort the numbers out.

    Does anyone get the idea that someone could possibly be playing with the numbers to get funding for someone's pet project? I put a certain level of trust in NASA and I don't think the current data is necessarily inaccurate, but the thought did cross my mind. What do Slashdotters think?

    This is being observed by numerous independent groups in multiple nations. It'd take a full-on conspiracy and not just a couple of guys fudging numbers.
