I remember reading an interview with him post-Cryptonomicon, and him hinting that some of your favorites will be in the next book or two, and I totally hope it's Root. Root And Bobby Shaftoe were by far the best characters....Shaftoe's morphine induced visions, I loved it.

I totally agree, my ATT @home service is horrible. Trying to get any resolution to your problems is like getting your wisdom teeth removed. Since sometime last Tuesday, I've had poor connectivity after 5:00 pm. I've called @home 4 times now, and they are FINALLY sending someone to my apartment. I recieve nothing but SPAM to my @home email account, though I've never used it for anything. Abuse@home is pathetic, it's like everything sent there is sent to /dev/null. As a cable TV provider ATT is pathetic. My parents have comcast, and their service is MUCH better than mine. I get almost no channels with my extended basic, and they recently raised my rates by 5 dollars a month. ATT offers another cable service in my area called METS, but they made the rates unbeliveably high in an attempt to make everyone switch to ATT@Home.

I agree with you on this. I saw something in another thread in this story that was along the lines of he says we should worry more about kids and less about Big Brother, and he lost credibility for that. That kinda stuff irks me. Oh no, he's not a paranoid, anti-government, nut case, so he has lost credibility. Let's all stop buying his books because an interview with him is being broadcast in Real Video, let's stop buying his books because he cares more about kids than he does about Big Brother...blah.

Actually, Bruce Sterling has had an entire book available online for quite sometime. The Hacker Crackdown : Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier. Neil is in noway trail blazing by putting an essay(which, In The Beginning is). Don't get me wrong, I like his work a lot, but he's by no means a trend setter for posting a work online.

Another cool thing about this mission is that Atlantis will have a new cockpit. They're replacing the cathode ray tubes and the gaugues with flat panel monitors. Makes the cockpit 75 pounds lighter and uses less power. Sposed to make it easier for them to recognize key functions, like altitude, velocity, the fact the windows crashed, etc.. They're going to be doing a bunch of repairs, replacing batteries, fans, fire extinguishors, smoke detectors, and air filters. The batteries have been failing one by one since they've been up there.

There is an article in Wired that says back in 98 he had new Public Enemy stuff posted on the PE websitebefore it came out, but the record label(Def Jam, aka Polygram, which got bought out by Universal) got pissed off and demanded that the songs be removed.

MSU will and has terminate employment and/or expell students/employees for hacking on university computers.
