In Michigan anyway, you are supposed to report your purchases made over the internet / through mail order catalogs on your state income tax return, and then you pay a certain tax based on this amount.
Root was by far the best character! I found him to be the most compelling character. I remember reading an interview with him post-Cryptonomicon, and him hinting that some of your favorites will be in the next book or two, and I totally hope it's Root. Root And Bobby Shaftoe were by far the best characters....Shaftoe's morphine induced visions, I loved it.
I totally agree, my ATT @home service is horrible. Trying to get any resolution to your problems is like getting your wisdom teeth removed. Since sometime last Tuesday, I've had poor connectivity after 5:00 pm. I've called @home 4 times now, and they are FINALLY sending someone to my apartment. I recieve nothing but SPAM to my @home email account, though I've never used it for anything. Abuse@home is pathetic, it's like everything sent there is sent to/dev/null. As a cable TV provider ATT is pathetic. My parents have comcast, and their service is MUCH better than mine. I get almost no channels with my extended basic, and they recently raised my rates by 5 dollars a month. ATT offers another cable service in my area called METS, but they made the rates unbeliveably high in an attempt to make everyone switch to ATT@Home.
I agree with you on this. I saw something in another thread in this story that was along the lines of he says we should worry more about kids and less about Big Brother, and he lost credibility for that. That kinda stuff irks me. Oh no, he's not a paranoid, anti-government, nut case, so he has lost credibility. Let's all stop buying his books because an interview with him is being broadcast in Real Video, let's stop buying his books because he cares more about kids than he does about Big Brother...blah.
Neil's a good example of opensource publishing done right. And more to the point the book is ENTIRELY his own content.I'd like to see more authors like him around.
Actually, Bruce Sterling has had an entire book available online for quite sometime. The Hacker Crackdown : Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier. Neil is in noway trail blazing by putting an essay(which, In The Beginning is). Don't get me wrong, I like his work a lot, but he's by no means a trend setter for posting a work online.
Another cool thing about this mission is that Atlantis will have a new cockpit. They're replacing the cathode ray tubes and the gaugues with flat panel monitors. Makes the cockpit 75 pounds lighter and uses less power. Sposed to make it easier for them to recognize key functions, like altitude, velocity, the fact the windows crashed, etc.. They're going to be doing a bunch of repairs, replacing batteries, fans, fire extinguishors, smoke detectors, and air filters. The batteries have been failing one by one since they've been up there.

Actually, pretty much any political site would rule. It changes Bush to Cain and Gore to Abel..
You get such jems as :
Testament by Governor Cain upon Vice-Pharoah Abel's Sermon upon Campaign Finance Reform
Cain Promotes Agenda To Save Our Purgatories By Supporting Our False messiahs
In the first in a series of reform speeches, Babylon Governor Cain today outlined a 666 minus 660-cubit agenda to reform efforts to clean unto the the beautiful work of GOD's hand
I'm not a fan (metalhead here..) but I LOVE what's going on!
I'm not a metal fan, but Bring the Noise rules, only reason I have Attack of the Killer B's By Anthrax. I don't find it odd that he supports napster. There is an article in Wired that says back in 98 he had new Public Enemy stuff posted on the PE websitebefore it came out, but the record label(Def Jam, aka Polygram, which got bought out by Universal) got pissed off and demanded that the songs be removed. Here is the link : Wired Story
I don't see any neglect on my part to remeber who he is, I *did* mention he was creator of Mirrorshades didn't I? Mirrorshades being the essential Postmodern Cyberpunk archive and all.. "If it's in MIRRORSHADES, it'll be science fiction in a year. In two years it will be in WIRED magazine. In three years teenage girls will be wearing it. In four years it'll be mentioned on CNN. In five years it'll be 'discovered.'"
Bruce Sterling has lots of neat ideas. Not only was he one of the starters of the Dead Media Project and Mirrorshades creator, he's started/is pretty involved in Viridian.
Another Good Book that deals with the crackers and how they are delt with is Bruce Sterling's The Hacker Crackdown. It's freely available in a few different electronic formats on the EFF site somewhere.
For this to happen, cheap, almost free internet access will have to become available. You have to not only consider the less than 50 percent of people in the US that have email access, but other countries in the world too. USPS is part of the global air mail, and when you consider the amount of people in the WORLD..not just the US without internet access, it's pretty clear that this will happen a LONG LONG way into the future, or never at all
Similar to them...but there arn't any REAL feature changes. Pro and Personal had different amounts of RAM. That's something very quickly noticeable. To utilize the built in TCP/IP stack, you'd need a modem. Which is an added cost. I'd like to see an integrated modem with the TCP/IP stack.
Most OEMs are saying ETA for this chip is 8/16. AMD's page doesn't give an exact date, just Q3 99. Large Manufactures should already have them according to the Athlon(bleh) press release. Prices are kinda neat. AMD is shipping them in 1000 quantiy units, with the Athlon 600 at 699 per chip(in the 1000 quanity). Only 324 for the 500 MHZ, 479 for the 550.
I think the point he was trying to make about getting kicked out of school was about the possible computer crimes charges brought on by Harvard. I go to Michigan State, and work in IT dept. for a college here, and part of MSU's Acceptable Use Policy, deals with hacking type stuff. MSU will and has terminate employment and/or expell students/employees for hacking on university computers. Now, if he did work on the site from a university machine, and Harvard chooses to do computer trespass stuff, I can see that being a reason to be worried.
A PII 400? Yah right. I ran this on the following system PII - 333 64 MB Ram It worked JUST fine. It's funny when you can say all the lines in the trailer from memory.
I think this is extremely cool news. The newton was a great device then, and now. I have a PalmIII and i totally love it, and I saw the newton many times, great functionallity...plus, there was a Web Server written for the Newton. Wireless modem connection, and the webserver on a newton...host some pages in a subway
you forgot "And France surrenders"
you forgot the part where they make up a couple new words per story

If you're going to provide a name, you might as well provide an email address, it's not like pilot won't give you all kinds of good information.

Sure, starcraft's AI isnt that good, but the AI in Brood War is way better. Get a multiplayer game going with 3 AI...AI rocks
Be careful that "Linux Coat" isn't made from penguin...Burlington Coat Factory is known for their..how should we say, strange fur sources.
