A robot with *only* Asimov's laws is a pretty good start.
Don't even need that. My garage door opener is a robot and it requires no such programming. Same goes for the elevator at work, my AWD gearbox in my car, and the eject button on my DVD player. You gotta stop thinking of robots in the 1950's sci fi terror sense and more like, you know, they actually are.
My mum does because she uses Windows at work, so knows that and has no interest in learning new things or figuring out why one OS is better/worse than the other. She just wants everything to work the same as it does at her office. You see that's the difference, I gave her the best solution, you just want to sell everyone your religion.
Today Linux just works, and for me personally it is much easier to use than Windows.
Unless you're using one of the million and one business apps that don't work well on Linux. then it doesn't work.
There is a reason that MS stills dominates desktop market share, and it has nothing to do with your religion.
It's not just about social media, very few even understands simple marketing.
You still see advertisements that try to force themselves onto people, not realizing that this creates a connection with discomfort and the product.
I think you don't understand marketing. One of the rules of the game is to invoke an emotional response, good or bad. Once the memory is planted in someone's head, it can then be manipulated. A known entity will always have more influence on an unknown entity which is why you have the saying "there's no such thing as bad publicity". This may have been a tactical blunder on their part, but it all helps to cement their brand in the public space.
Two can play this game. If it were my neighbourhood I'd organise a truck to drive around and pick up all the phone books and dump them all at the phone company's head office, or better yet the CEO's house. Rinse and repeat until they get the message.
I don't think things will ever reach a point of "fast enough"
For most people we've already reached that point which is why the tablets and smartphones etc are so popular. For most people a computer is something for reading web pages, and playing angry birds.
My current machine is a 6 year old laptop, it does everything I need it to do and I have no plans on upgrading it (apart for a new battery every few years)
"Computers long ago reached the point where they were fast enough..."
For you, maybe - but not for everyone.
Yes, yes, but for the majority of cases it's true. Most corporate users only require basic 6 year old CPU power to do their job. Yes some people need grunt but these are the minority, even more so now with cloud type services these special use cases are being migrated to thin clients so all processing power is on a server with much more power than any desktop can provide.
So, I really don't understand this (the highlighted part). I've not only run Windows fairly trouble free myself, but I "admin" it for a number of family and friends, and don't find it difficult at all.
This is why Linux never gains any real traction in the consumer space, most of it's fanbase are rabid fundamentalists who turn your average person off with their religious hatred. Windows clearly works ok for most people since most people use it .
You clearly missed the point the first time so I'll explain the joke to you. A man with a gun is equal to if not worse than a killing "device". In fact you could define a looney with a gun as a "killing device".
Have you ever worked for a Fortune 500 company, or any company with more than 10k employees spread across several states?
No, which probably explains why I've never faced this problem. Could you explain to me why you'd want to work in this sort of environment, as it doesn't sound very appealing?
I have to add that it's simply awe-inspiringly large.
60mx30m isn't much bigger than an olympic sized pool, although it is 10 times deeper. But even then it's peanuts compared to this thing which is a 1000m in length and holds 10 times as much water
I can only assume you have no kids and don't know any kids, nor have seen any kids lately. I worked for a youth fashion retailer a couple of years ago and watches are huge with the young cool people. My daughter is a tween and her and all her friends have them and love them. They are no longer just a time piece, they are a fashion accessory.
See you lost any credibility once you said "all of them". I live in NZ where we have some geothermal plants. It works here because our country is effectively one long ridge of volcanos. I'm not so sure that applies to the rest of the world.
If you're using a good torrent search engine it'll give you a whole list of sites that have the exact same content. I fail to see how this achieves anything
That is: HR puts an arbitrary cap on what technical people can make and it is less than what managers make.
I'm not sure where you live or work, but nowhere I've worked lets HR decide how much people get paid. HR are merely the rubber stampers, department managers have their own budgets and it's between them and the Exec team that decide where money gets spent.
Why would I give up a 6 figure salary where I do nothing, to go on a basic income?
The problem is that useless people like me get into a position that pays quite well, so my role in life evolves into one of maintaining the status quo.

If you're willing to move her to Win7 and away from AOL software, why not just move her to Linux?
Which distro/version? And herein lies the problem...
I think you've confused the word nerd with religious zealot

I haven't tried Windows Azure, which is the subject matter here...
And Apple is dead too right? And Diet Coke.. what about that?
No terminator robots either yet people still got murdered. Weird huh?
Both machine guns and landmines are pretty easy to avoid: Go where they are not.
Like a movie theatre for instance? a School maybe? What about summer camp? Or the humble old supermarket?

You may not be familiar with this thing called the internet. It lets you buy stuff from anywhere...

That's rrp. Only fools pay rrp. Amazon has it for $140, and I'm sure I could find it cheaper if I spent more than 5 seconds looking around
only idiots spent $200 for MS Office at home
Yeah especially when it only costs $140.
